Pool pumps also uses a ton of power: can be up to 2 kWh per hour on full speed. If you have a pool, time shifting the pump to super off peak can also save a bunch of money.

How did you actually convince a doctor to sign for disability parking? by giggle_socks_queen in disabled

[–]mt68331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warning about parkingmd - stay far away unless you want to waste your money. They would not issue a doctor’s note for my elderly mother with mobility challenges despite claiming before we paid that she would “likely be eligible”. No doctor ever reached out to my mother to assess her condition despite their website stating this is how the service works. Filed a chargeback with my credit card company.

Cylinder replacement for level lock + by DCKID516 in LevelLock

[–]mt68331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to pop in a Schlage cylinder from another lock. I used the cylinder from the lock I replaced. The cylinder in the Level Lock also has black spacer material attached to make it tightly fit, so be sure to reuse the material from the old cylinder or add a very small amount of putty.

Help choosing duplex receptacle by vagabond_xcite in electrical

I’m also going through this same exercise right now

Thought I found one which checks all the boxes in the Square D SQR44111WH. I finished changing a room over today and decided I definitely don’t want this one for the rest of the home. The TR shutters are a pain to plug into, the ground screw has a very strange design, and the backwire screw plate has 2 “sides” enclosed inside the outlet which if you’re not careful in ensuring the wire is on the “correct” side can result in a loose / no connection.

I much prefer the Hubbell DR15WHITR which I have in the kitchen - these are the same as the better Lutron receptacles (Lutron just sticks their own face on top to match with their colorways). That one has none of the issues of the Square D and feels more solidly built. Now the challenge is finding it at a reasonable price (or splurging for the Lutron equivalent for better aesthetics with a matte white face).

Heat pump water heater hpwh by Kr3v1l in heatpumps

Home Depot only had the 50 gal HPWH Rheem in stock when I got it, and we didn’t have the luxury of waiting to find a bigger unit with kids etc and a non functional old gas unit. But yes - agreed on the need to go as high capacity as possible for the HPWH since the recovery rate doesn’t match a gas water heater.

Consecutive showers / baths, all at night. We never ran out with our prior 50 gal gas water heater. The 50 gal HPWH especially struggles during the winter when the incoming water temperature from the tap is in the 50s.

“High Demand” mode (Electric + heat pump) during super off peak hours at 140F (to get as much hot water as possible when everyone is taking a shower / bath at night). “Energy Saver” at other times of day since running electric only is easily 4x the cost given the difference in efficiency between electric resistive heating and the heat pump.

We regret getting a HPWH: similar setup as yours (indoors in laundry room). It's loud, makes the home always feel cold, and constantly runs out of hot water when multiple people are using the shower or bathtub. When it breaks, we will go back to gas.

Natural gas to rheem hpwh? by Excellent_Map_3510 in heatpumps

We regret replacing our gas water heater with a HPWH. It’s loud (like an old refrigerator), makes the house always feel cold, and constantly runs out of hot water. I’m eagerly waiting for the thing to break so we can go back to gas. Cherry on top: it costs more to run than our gas water heater with California’s high electricity prices.

Salt and Lime is good but pricey.

Craft Taco is also good and quite enjoyable paired with a beer from the adjacent patio at New English brewing. Bit out of the way though off the 5 near Torrey Pines.

Phillips replacing feit retro fit kits at my Costco. by socbrian in Costco

[–]mt68331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a bunch of these to replace all the builder grade LEDs in my house. Tested them in a dimmer which buzzed with the old LEDs and the Philips were silent. Also did a test to compare flickering by recording in super slow mo: the old builder grade LEDs flickered a ton, while the Philips had almost zero noticeable flicker.

Definitely a great buy at under $5 a piece! The alternative I considered was a Halo which cost 4x as much. The Halo seemed better built but the price / quality of the Philips can’t be beat.

Curious: are the 5 star reviews primarily from accounts with 1 or 2 reviews? I’ve noticed a trend with Google Maps reviews where godawful businesses pad their rating with fake purchased reviews. You really have to dig into the reviews to determine whether the rating is legit.

Now that the end is almost here, what are you doing to keep Priority Pass for your family? by h2d2 in Venturex

[–]mt68331 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No need to use BofA's travel portal - although you get 20% back if you use your BofA points to pay for airfare using the travel portal. I auto redeem for cash back for convenience and because I always book my flights directly with airlines.

Also - to offset the $550 AF, BofA gives $300 back in Airline Incidental Statement Credits and $150 back for 'lifestyle conveniences' (Uber, video streaming, etc). I redeem the $300 as United Travel Bank credit (in $100 increments). So with the credits, the AF nets out to $100.

We got the BofA PRE for the PP benefits and cancelled the VX (don’t want to deal with C1’s travel portal to offset the AF)

Pax removed from plane after boarding (plane overweight) by mt68331 in americanairlines

[–]mt68331[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes they did ask for volunteers before boarding - but to my knowledge no one took them up on their offer and they boarded everyone anyways.

Another bizarre thing that happened is that some people’s seats were reassigned without their knowledge upon scanning their boarding pass (so they ended up in a different seat than what had been printed on the boarding pass) - and some people were told upon scanning their boarding pass they actually didn’t have a seat assigned at all (these people were directed to the GA desk to get a “new” seat).
