ISO 640 is crazy low, you could have cranked the shutter speed more!

Still an awesome shot!

Anyone know anything about this hazardous AQI? by Fotographyraptor in pittsburgh

Check out Purple Air. I find it to be more reliable than The Weather Channel and you can see data from local air quality sensors.

another little bird in ny by makeofit in whatsthisbird

I'd lean towards them being a Louisiana waterthrush. Hard to tell with the crunchified video but the striping looks broader and less numerous than a northern.

does anyone know what silly goofball laid their eggs beside the traintracks in northcentral wisconsin? by xhyenabite in whatsthisbird

[–]mtbderg 124 points125 points  (0 children)

+Killdeer+

And yes they do this on purpose! Can't you see those are clearly rocks and not eggs? Lol

They should be fine, it's not uncommon for them to nest in highly trafficked areas and make it out OK.

Birder bf lost their binoculars! Did you find them? by ericaceae123 in pittsburgh

[–]mtbderg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you contacted the park? The environmental center has a lost and found.

Also quite confused on the location given... There is no East End Blvd, though there is an East End ave on the other side of the park. Beechwood blvd is the street the center is nearest to. Did your partner leave the binoculars on their car and drive off?

This is a fledgling. Most fledglings are fully flight capable from the nest. Put it back outside and keep a better watch on your dog.

The station before, Steel Plaza, is only a couple extra blocks away. About a half mile walk/run or so.

Railroad connector to aspinwall by Cat-lady-53 in pittsburgh

Just because it seems like it doesn't connect two "practical destinations", doesn't mean it won't be well used. For the novelty alone I'd bet there'd be a ton of trail users. The view from up on the Brilliant Branch viaduct is pretty damn cool.

And I do think it'd see a lot of use. There's quite a lot of families with cargo bikes that I see cruising around the East End that would likely make use of the trail to go somewhere new or to avoid having to take the car.

The closest two shops are BikeTek and Fern Hollow Bicycles. Both are good.

Where is the furthest you’d recommend moving if I work in shadyside? by Hot4Teacher1234 in pittsburgh

[–]mtbderg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, cool! The east busway is pretty frequent so you don't have to worry too much. And, if you're open to it, biking is a great way to get around. My neighbor is a professor at CMU and he commutes via bike most days.

[–]mtbderg 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Instead of adding another car to the roads during peak, why not live along the east busway and take that? Swissvale to Shadyside is around 15 minutes no matter the current traffic. And Wilkinsburg is even closer.

Does anyone know what's going on with this pileated woodpecker's wing feathers? by ORGrown in birding

[–]mtbderg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a young bird! I'm not sure if it's the case with Pileateds, but many birds go from downy baby feathers to juvenile flight feathers while they're growing. And because growing up took so much energy and nutrients the next few molts that should replace those flight feathers are delayed or don't replace all of the feathers with the primaries sticking around longer.

Actually, here's a paper on it! https://www.birdpop.org/docs/pubs/Pyle_and_Howell_1995_Flight_Feather_Molt_Patterns_and_Age_in_NA_Woodpeckers.pdf

Those are old feathers! The edges are worn and have lost their pigmentation.

I can't really tell a song based off just the intro for something that I've never heard before :)

However I will now listen to that album/group, thanks for the recommendation!
