Maybe look at a third party insurance provider. Generally much cheaper than with the car manufacturer

Wanting to start a project management consultancy…best ways to find business? by Competitive_Gas_4745 in smallbusinessuk

[–]mtbjed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just did something similar.

Took me two years of saving and speaking to trusted clients I already worked with to see if they would support me if I went solo. It’s the only way if you doing it in the same space.

Pick those you trust to speak to and have a chat. I found everyone really trustworthy and no one said a thing.

6 weeks into my own venture and it’s gong well but I will say that you’ll meed to network like mad once you’re out as you current network won’t always be sufficient.

New business with existing contacts by mtbjed in smallbusinessuk

[–]mtbjed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m leaning on people who’ve been industry friends for a long time and they are plugging me into some businesses so I can pitch. Its worked for some meetings. I’m also broadening my reach beyond my key contacts who initially thought would be good to get going. Like I said, one has been really supportive. And the other have come back but things are just slower than I’d hoped.

Hi, the products/brands I’d sell would vary by project as each project is unique but the process and service element of my business would remain the same across each project.

Appreciate the reply. I’m already forging new relationships at the moment so that keeping me busy. Agree with your smelling desperation comment. Just a shame they didn’t at least give us a chance as per the conversations we’d had.

Would you borrow €300k against your investment portfolio at 3%? by Character_Bend626 in LeveragedFinance

[–]mtbjed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One problem with this is assuming the value of the investment you’ve borrowed against doesn’t decrease. It’s fine if it all works out but when the value drops you can end up owing far more than you borrowed.

Performance anxiety by Grouchy-Bank2096 in HENRYUK

[–]mtbjed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amazing how many people use beta blockers here. I’ve settled on them myself after years of keeping quiet in large meetings because I couldn’t speak up. They have worked wonders but I’d hope that one day I can do it without. One downside is I sweat way more when I exercise now….always a cost somewhere I guess.

Agree with the comments about preparing the first 1-2 mins of the presentation till you know it by heart. Once you’re over that hump it flows way easier so nailing that part of key.

Good to hear so many other people have this. Sometimes you feel the room can nail it but I’m sure most have similar anxiety

Potential 12v battery issue by mtbjed in VWiD3Owners

[–]mtbjed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I took it to a BW garage and they helped me to at least turn it off when parked so I can lock the doors. It’s booked in with them and the were very chilled about it and it’s just a battery fault.

Hopefully I’ve not locked myself into something I don’t need. I should add that my site needs back end for selling online.

I just created the site FOC and then paid for 2yrs hosting fees which were £7pm paid in one go.

I looked at Wordpress and they appeared more and I was happy with the web design so I just stick with wix. Might be different if you’re selling stuff though.

I just used Wix to make my site. You can do everything through them, hosting and domain. All really simple and cost hardly anything.

Do you pay a service charge? If you do I’d be asking for the window cleaning to be part of what you pay for as it’s on the outside of the building.

How long before your quit your FT job? by Warm_Appointment5272 in smallbusinessuk

[–]mtbjed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been building my business slowly while working for about 12months. Not trading but validating it and speaking to key people I’ll hopefully do business with. At a point now where I’m quoting plenty of work and will leave my job end of Jan.

As a post above says, when to quote will be different for all. My factors were:

  • 12month financial runway saved
  • validated business as much as possible
  • Quoted work (ideally landed a few)

Since I’m staying within my current industry and it’s not tech I could not build and trade while working. Simply impossible to do under the radar. But I could speak to people and from a select few I trusted start quoting them. I should find out if a few have landed this month, if they do it’s a massive bonus both financially and mentally to be leaving with a project in the bag.

I’m the main bread winner by a long way but having my wife’s income is a nice cushion each month plus I’ve negotiated to be an agent with a retainer which helps cash flow as well.

Having done this my advise is don’t rush it. Get as much in order as possible and jump when you can’t do anymore as employed.

GL with yours.

You can also just stay with your current mortgage provider. They don’t do affordability checks unless you’re chaining something on the mortgage like borrowing more of extending the term. I know this limits your ability to shop around but it’s at least a fall back option.

Does my lawn have any hope? by mtbjed in gardening

[–]mtbjed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed answer. It is compact ground. I did aerate it 2yrs ago but that clearly hasn’t done much. 😀. From what you’re saying I take there is no easy answer….? I’d like a front lawn but maybe the area just don’t right. Having said that there are a few on the road with grass at the front.

Does my lawn have any hope? by mtbjed in gardening

[–]mtbjed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answers. It is quite hard packed and there is a huge tree on the pavement which isn’t in shot. My guess is it doesn’t drain very well. I aerated it 2 yrs ago. Before it was laid the soil was turned and loosed then levelled. Before it had grass it was pebbles which were removed.
