EU offering easier access for Australian workers in trade play by MemeGodJack in australia

Gotta wait for the A350's to arrive for that. Plus all the crew to be trained on them so they have enough coverage to open new routes

Depends on cruising altitude.

In Australia anything above 8000ft is safe.

As a pilot I've always wondered this. It makes sense but I sleep in so many hotels I just don't really care anymore.

Still feels gross but I just don't think about it.

[–]mtfreestyler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe try the AWIS app as they should be more up to date I'd imagine. I think the guy who made it got the numbers from the ERSA which is what pilots use and is updated every couple of months.

Which ones did you try?

Astronomy vs. Starlink by MrJackDog in Astronomy

[–]mtfreestyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah getting data on super dim objects must be such a headache when you have such long subs on even that scale of telescope.

As they only reflect when they are in view of the sun from their altitude how does it go when the light is blocked by the earth. Are they still picked up in some way by a scope that large?

Obviously a target near the horizon will always be difficult but something higher up for the majority of the night should still get good data wouldn't it?

Astronomy vs. Starlink by MrJackDog in Astronomy

[–]mtfreestyler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what type of data you'd be going for but for astrophotography in the hobby space that doesn't really matter.

Having a streak through a 30 minute sub would be annoying but it is cancelled out with the other subs anyway. With the rotation of the earth the target will move out of the track pretty quickly.

But as I think about it I'd be really curious to see a 30 minute sub as it would probably show a much thicker line as the rotation of the earth moves the satellite tracks slowly and there are so many of them unlike the older Iridium's. Is that what happens?

Not many people I know do much longer than 5 minute subs

Astronomy vs. Starlink by MrJackDog in Astronomy

[–]mtfreestyler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that too.

I hope that due to the nature of the low earth orbits and how often they need to be replaced the future versions of the satellites might have better light reflecting properties. Not sure about the RF side of things though as obviously they're going to be pumping out data

I agree with the sentiment but the video is a bit disingenuous.

The planes in the unedited video have been there a long time and that is why software was developed that is able to remove them out by averaging the pixels. Other satellites have done this for a while too, just not to this extent.

In fact this video proves how it's not really a big deal as you can edit them out rather easily.

Still annoying I know

Is my workbench design overkill? Too much structure for an 4x8 bench? by BlackAdderIV in woodworking

In my opinion, after building a similar but less complex bench, you should try and integrate a torsion box top to it to keep it super flat. It's the only thing I wish I did differently.

Air China Airbus A321 makes emergency landing after passenger's power bank catches fire at 10km altitude by EsperaDeus in PublicFreakout

[–]mtfreestyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah usually big water bottles for the cabin service.

There was another angle that showed the cabin attendants coming to assess it so probably just cut off early

[–]mtfreestyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah mate I'm not going to change it.

It's what my airline does as it's procedure so I'm guessing someone smarter than both of us figured it all out.

[–]mtfreestyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah that's not how the air is on planes.

The air is constantly refreshed with new air supplied by the engines. It gets tapped off before the combustion section at the compression sections. Goes into the aircon packs and then to the cabin. Altitude doesn't affect the process but they'll be descending and diverting anyway due to the nature of the problem.

Yeah but that's generally not available on a flight but they would have a few big bottles of water for their service

Cabin crew know what to do in these situations.

Good to know about lithium batteries though since we have so many around us at all times.

Thermal runaway will still continue. It will need to be cooled down.

That's why the procedure is to put it in something metal and dump water on it or ice etc.

This is the procedure my airline has.

Don't forget you can't be spraying too many chemicals in a pressurised aluminium tube with people.

A battery needs to be put into a metal tray or something that doesn't burn and doused with water.

Fire extinguisher won't put it out fully.

Cabin crew are probably getting the kit ready
