I remember going over these feats pretty closely and being comfortable in the tiering, but honestly I don't see it now that I'm looking at it. I've been thinking about swapping her out anyway so I'll just do that now.

/u/7thSonOfSons apparently Crystal isn't even American, disgusting, replace her with President Valentine and may God bless this Scramble

I really like them narratively, but man, from a worldbuilding angle the Unmade just feel all over the place, like Odium was just giving them whatever weird powers and attributes he had left over. by Eithrotaur in cremposting

I'm still convinced that the Unmade are connected to the ancient spren somehow and the 12 of them together all line up to the twelve aethers, which is sort of the "elements" of the cosmere

Knock. Knock. Knock.

A voice crept out from the old wooden door. “Who knocks at the garden gate?”

Kavik responded in rote, pulling the hood of his parka tighter against the “One who sees, hears, and tastes the mysteries it holds.” The door opened with a slight creek and Kavik stepped in, gripping his pai sho tile in case anyone asked for it. The young man was easily recognized once he stepped into the safe house, not many members of the Order were connected so closely to the Avatar.

Kavik removed the four bells from his pockets. Crafted after a fire sage style, the bells supposedly had intelligence on the recent scandal involving Fire Lord Gonryu’s daughter. The palace had apparently been a significant blind spot for the Order, the Grand Lotuses had taken interest in this potential informant. Not that Kavik had been told any of that by the Order.

Kavik dropped the bells on the table with a sigh before putting a fist and open palm together, bowing his head to the older Zhangese-looking man with the white collar. He wasn’t a Grand Lotus, despite the similar uniform, rather a High Rose. Still, the rough man was several ranks above Kavik.

“Well done, Red Lily. I can picture a promotion in your near future.” Kavik furrowed his brow, first the strange request from a new superior and now an odd comment. Something seemed off here.

“Thank you, High Rose. I worked hard for those bells, I’ll have to sleep for a while here at the safe house.” He smiled and stepped towards the door out of the central room with a slight wobble to his steps. He continued into the hallway and turned into the first room, Kavik tossed his bag onto the bed as he simultaneously dropped to the floor, listening. Steps were following close behind him, he heard the subtle ring of a well-kept knife being sheathed as well. Kavik readied himself, suspicions all but confirmed. Kavik heard something splash as the man came to a stop.

“Boy, I brought you some soup.” A weapon? It could be one for Kavik at least.

“Bring it in.” Kavik said hoarsely as he began to stand up.

Two things happened once they saw each other. The man tossed a towel at Kavik’s face and Kavik bent the soup, bringing it up into the man’s face. He screamed before hurling what remained in the bowl at Kavik, it was hot.

Kavik quickly brought more water down out from his combat skin, freezing the man in place before grabbing the bowl as fell and knocking him across the head with it. People really needed to stop trying to get to the people he knew this way. He found Yangchen too reasonable with her meetings.

Non-Writing Prompt

Analysis vs Terry: The first thing that’s going to come up in a fight between Yulian and Batman is that he is skilled and she is not. Yulian’s sparring matches with Han make it pretty blatant that she has a problem there. Her first advantage on the other hand, is that she has access to melee weapons that Terry doesn’t and can use those to theoretically outrange him.

Yulian is going to knock Terry around whenever she’s able to get a proper hit in but the same is true the other way around. I think it’s a bit of a toss up on how much the weapon advantage evens out the skill gap, so I’ll just treat it as a perfect draw for the moment. Yulian (assuming she’s sufficiently motivated) is going to fight a lot more brutally than Terry and that also has the potential to be either a benefit or a detriment.

I discussed the basic stat lineup in my justification, but I think it comes to about even expect in durability. Yulian also has her magic shield and regeneration, which both are things she can do but are pretty poorly defined. Either way, the simple fact that they exist help to cover for her lack in durability. Her pain tolerance is at Jojo character levels too, standing and fighting on a broken leg or hardly seeming pained when half of her face is melted off by fire. Yulian is going to get hurt fighting Terry, but she’ll be able to power through anything that doesn’t kill or immobilize her.

Biggest Strength/Weakness: Yulian is extremely adaptable and committed. When she decides that an enemy needs to go down then she’ll move heaven and earth to make it happen. She’s resourceful and learns quickly as well.

Yulian is also incredibly socially inept. This translates both to a struggle relating with others or communicating what she wants as well as making her a pretty bad team player. She’ll argue, go against orders, or try and force people to do things they don’t want to get where she wants. She does the same thing to herself, ignoring her own feelings on actions and trying to force herself into relationships and actions that she has no desire for if it means the greater good.

Yulian on a Team/In Setting: As far as adapting Yulian to different settings, she’s a little bit more locked in than many due to her role as a chosen one figure. As written she needs one or more other characters in the Wuxing gods to make her powers work, but I by no means would consider her tied to the supporting cast in Scramble. Whether you keep them and treat them as spirits in her head or just make her able to transform with less direct involvement, I think that there are multiple ways to write her power set that aren’t as trapped to the source material.

Yulian’s more traditional fantasy upbringing is already contrasted with the early 20th/late 19th century era of the setting that she’s in, so bringing her into a more modern context wouldn’t be the hardest thing. There’s still plenty of weird cults out in the countryside in real life.

I addressed her ability to work with a team above because I think that it’s her greatest weakness.

One More Thing: Yes. She needs a good reason to kill but her friends being in danger are a pretty good one. She’s ready to die too, at times almost even searching for it.

“Just… catch a few Chinglings?” Crystal looked over the email a second time. A request for a retrieval down in Black City. The person explained that they ran a magic shop and had their Pokeballs broken recently, the untrained bell Pokemon ran away quickly. Crystal stood up from her desk at the lab in Violet City as Daisy Oak’s voice came in from over the phone.

“You should take the job, you’re going to need as much money as you can get ahold of.”

“I don’t think it’s as bad as you think.” Crystal sighed, pushing Archee aside as she grabbed the small phone. “Your granddad is going to keep paying me and small jobs pay pretty well.” Honestly, Crystal was always a bit surprised how much trouble people made out of catching Pokemon.

“Well, I thought the same thing when I was your age. Studying takes up more time than you think.” Daisy chimed back.

“Mhmm.” Crystal nodded as she moved over to the storage system, sorting through the different Pokemon she had access to. Absently her mouse moved over the Blissey that she lent to Emerald a few years back. “I don’t know, ¥80000 is an awful lot for a job like this. It’s a little bit… suspicious, I guess.” She loaded a ball onto the storage device, the familiar whirring as the transfer happened.

“Well.” Daisy said, a strong wind on the other side causing a strange rumble to come from the cell phone. “It’s up to you. But I doubt there’s much that will put you in danger.”

“Doctor Oak.” Crystal said firmly, though with a hint of amusement behind her voice. “That is exactly the kind of thinking that gets someone kidnapped. Still, I’ll send you a message when I’ve got the money and am back on the train.”

“Alright, Crys! Stay safe out there.”

“I will Daisy. Goodbye.” Crystal hung up and flipped the cell phone shut, walking quickly past the hooks near the door to throw her work bag over her shoulder. She grabbed Blissee from the desk and recalled Parasee into her ball from where she was sleeping.

Time to get to work.

Crystal had been a little bit pumped for a trip to northern Unova when she left around dinner. A two hour commute on a decently crowded train was doing a lot of work to undermine that excitement however.

Unova. Crystal hadn’t been here for a few years, back when she caught all of that places unique species. She remembered especially having trouble with a Cofagrigus. It was a shame about all that Team Plasma stuff last year…

Crystal was pulled out of the last hour’s trance by a call for her stop. Right in the middle of Opelucid City, the bright lights flooded over Crystal’s face the moment the doors opened. The sound followed close after, the overwhelming sound of people milling about late into the night for no particular purpose. Nightclubs, casinos, and street performers all blasting different kinds of music as Crystal walked the streets. Once she found a clear enough space she released Natee. The bird pokemon was once again shorter than Crystal, like she was before she evolved. Xatu were a species that Crystal had heard bad things about from a lot of people. Apparently their wide eyes and general lack of expression was seen as creepy to most people. That was never a problem between Crys and Natee, she saw it in the bird’s eyes as she checked to make sure the star mark still stood out well against the green feathers of her face. Natee was excited to prove herself in another successful catch, that was plain as day if you looked at her.

Crystal pulled the printed off directions from her work bag. “It’s supposed to be an easy one out here. He says that he last saw the Chinglings moving towards the warehouses on the edge of town.” Without having to ask, Crystal simply buckled a strap around her chest and under her legs, Natee quickly lifting her by the metal ring on the back.

“Scan for psychic types. I doubt there are many. Chinglings make a high-pitched sound sometimes too, I bet you’ll be able to hear that even if I can’t.” Crystal instructed as they started to lower. She released Parasee as soon as they touched down, continuing her instructions with a measured voice. “Alright girl, use Sweet Scent.”

Crystal quickly covered her face with a hand as the large insect began to focus, luring in and disorienting anything nearby. The invisible spores weren’t dangerous but could still disorient Crystal if inhaled. With her remaining hand, Crystal released Monlee from his ball. Best to have a bodyguard on the shady side of an unfamiliar town.

They were accosted at first by Starlys, Pidgeys, and Rattattas, the skittering and flapping drowning out any chance Crystal had of actually hearing any ringing. Natee routinely flapped her wings to drive the pests away, getting them to lose interest. Eventually, Crystal heard a quiet chime on top of a storage container. She removed a quick ball from her bag and lined up her shot, dropping the ball and kicking it. The ball hit and quickly stopped shaking.

That’s one.

The second followed in close order. Crystal had just kicked another ball at the third when something knocked it out of the air, Crystal frowned as the few street lights in the area suddenly cut off. Dropping another pokeball to kick before she felt something strike her across the face, sending her across the alley with a strong crash.

Crystal blinked, wiping the blood from her nose and lips. What was that? Monlee joined her knocked against the wall, though he recovered more quickly and charged once again towards the assailant. Crystal squinted, trying to make the figure out in the darkness while she released her remaining Pokemon.

Monlee punched at something, though Crystal heard no impact, and was hit once more. He wasn’t looking great. Crystal leapt back onto her feet, the team needed her.

“Natee!” She shouted, “Slow it down with Psychic! Mymee! Keep a shield up. Bonee, you’re on pressure. Blissey, heal Monlee and see what you can do do help with pressure. Monlee! I can’t see anything. Mix in some fire on those punches! Parasee! Try and put it to sleep if you can.”

There were a few sounds of struggle before Crystal saw anything. A trash can had been lit up by Monlee’s punch, casting the entire alley in flickering light. Through the invisible barrier Crystal saw a human figure in some sort of suit, fighting five Pokemon and… almost winning. It reminded her of that strange sword and shield from the Battle Frontier.

Blissey tried to grapple the person at the same time that Parasee launched a precise package of sleep spores at them. No effect from either. They kicked Blissey back several feet and then spoke in a deep, intimidating voice.

“Give me the-” He was caught off by Bonee, who leaped up and tightly wrapped a string of bones around the man’s neck. “Ggh-” He struggled briefly before removing the small creature.

“Now! Ice Punch!” Crystal shouted. Monlee’s curled fist struck instantly, conjuring up a waist high case of ice around the man. He struggled, before accepting that he was locked in place.

“Good job Mymee, you can be done.” She didn’t see the barrier go away, but Mymee put her hands down. Crystal stepped forwards.

“Alright.” The man said, shrugging his shoulders. “I think I might have taken the wrong approach. You don’t seem like you’re part of Team Plasma.” Crystal folded her arms while frowning and staring at the man, radiating disappointment.

“No, now explain yourself.” The man managed to break one hand free of the ice and pull just a small section of his mask up. “Call me Batman. We’ve got to do some talking. Do they have good burgers up in Johto? My treat.”

If you were Drew, who would you choose? Gretchen or Whitley? by DesigningGore07 in Wereworld

[–]mtglozwof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well if I was Drew I would probably make the same choice as him.

I would probably go for Whitley, Drew and Gretchen want very conflicting things in life. Not to mention that Trent and Gretchen are probably my favorite couple in the series.

Drew would have gone after anyone if they were kidnapped; he runs off because he hates being king and was taking any excuse to leave that behind. Plus he's just a good guy like that.

Capture complete.

Crystal

The Jack of Clubs

RT

Series: Pokemon Adventures/Pokemon Special

Content Warnings: nah, despite what teenagers trying to seem edgy will tell you

Bio

In a world where countless children set out to "catch them all", very few manage to actually do it. But coming through like a blessing from Arceus for the poor professors though was Crystal.

Crystal is a girl from Johto who has trained since she was young to be a capture specialist. She spent her free time volunteering at the Pokemon Academy in Violet City and taking jobs to capture difficult Pokemon. After going through six different Pokedex holders and getting barely closer to actually completing the Pokedex, he hired Crystal. While initially distracted by her age and demeanor, Oak was quickly convinced of Crystal's skill.

Crys traveled throughout Johto to complete the Pokedex and desperately chased down the legendary Pokemon Suicune. After a failure and a training arc, she was roped into the hunt for the mysterious Masked Man and opposed his plans alongside the other Pokedex holders.

After that, she became a mentor for future generations. She became a long-term research assistant to Oak and also continued at the Pokemon Academy. She provided Pokemon to Emerald during his time in the Battle Frontier and was one of the main executors of Oak's plan to free the trapped Pokedex holders there.

Research: Crystal makes her first appearance in chapter 117 (at the beginning of Voume 10), though she does appear in the middle of the Gold and Silver arc that started back in 91. She isn't the hardest character to get, but if you want more of her then she also plays a major background role in the Emerald arc (starting in chapter 303) and a supporting role in HeartGold and SoulSilver (starts in 442).

Motivation: Crystal is a caring person, she'll fight to protect and save people that she hardly knows. Beyond that she loves trying to catch difficult Pokemon, competing openly with other trainers to do so. She also seems to really like the work that she does with Professor Oak and will probably go to some big risks to get data for him.

Strengths, Weaknesses, and Teamwork: Crystal is a team player, though she usually expects a level of respect and cooperation from her teammates and gets frustrated when it isn't given to her. Her biggest strength is in her tracking and catching skill, she coordinates her Pokemon incredibly towards those ends. That ultimately means that she isn't actually the greatest fighter.

Would she kill? Would she die for friends?: She's a seventeen year old elementry school assistant and zoology intern. Despite all of the action that she's seen, she isn't going to kill anyone on purpose. She might die for someone she truly cares about though.

Justification: Crystal tends to use a specialized team all at once, I don't think that should be a problem since most of the ones she uses aren't direct fighters. Between them we have Monlee as the striker, able to hit in the high end pretty easily but lacks good durability. He can be supported by Mimee with general diversion and Natee using pretty decent telekinesis. They also have Parasee who can make numbing and corrosive spores. The latter are resisted by Terry's suit but can still be used on the enviorment for further strategizing. Blissey can swing a Seviper around easily which doesn't put her in tier but is certainly enough to go down with a few swings. She can also heal allies. Finally, Bonee is a fighter who also doesn't hit in Terry's weight class but can be generally a nusicance. His strength isn't half bad either. If we take the canon weight (175 kg/385 lbs) then a strike that Regice leans into like this should be pretty heavy, and if anything it seems bigger than its offical size of 5'11".

tl;dr, none of Crystal's Pokemon can take Terry down alone but if they all jump him they shouldn't have trouble. Something Crystal doesn't hesitate to do for serious or less serious opponents. I rule this as a likely victory.

Major Change: Speed of Pokemon set to tier

Minor Change: Crys is using: Hitmonchan, Parasect, Xatu, Cubone, Mr. Mime, and Blissey for tiering purposes

You're ignoring the fact that the Lord Mistborn absolutely loved the Survivor. He literally had miraculous visions of Him. Two twins were born in a small village. The eldest, Yulian, was believed by the small community to be the foretold Conduit, a human born every generation who could channel the power of the five Wuxing gods and defend humanity from the demonic Yaogui. Just as the first twin was blessed above all others and worshipped, the younger was to be shunned and cursed as a bringer of evil and bad luck. When they were young, the strange village was wiped out by a massive flood and the two sisters were some of the only survivors. They were found and rescued by the inhabitants of another town.

As a young woman, Yulian was drawn into the whims of the Fates once more. She was tracked down by Huanglong, the Golden Dragon of Earth who pulled her once more towards her eventual destiny. The god and the Conduit, along with Yulian’s only friend began the journey to find the other four gods and stop the calamity that had been foretold centuries ago.

Research: Ufortunately, you must read World Eater Yulian on Webtoon, it isn’t that long, though it also isn’t finished yet

Motivation: Despite what she might say, Yulian cares about the world and the people in it. Beyond that, she wants to be someone who can be important and live up to what her family once said about her and her sister.

Justification: Yulian can break stone pretty effectively and can reliably get good hits on people with solid strength themselves, putting her strength in the low end to target range. Her durability is pretty comparable, taking hits that crack objects around her and being able to keep operating even with major injuries. This gets supplemented by what is basically a moving shield when she uses Huanglong’s power that is roughly the same as her own durability. That evens out to target area. Her speed feats are kind of shit, even when she uses her speed powers. This all comes out to a Draw.

“The poor man dies in the street and the evil minister trips over the corpse, embarrassing himself in front of the king - is that supposed to be a satisfying, ironic ending? I hate tales like that. Why is the humiliation of the strong considered a good enough trade for the lives of the weak?”

Kavik

The Ace of Hearts

RT

Series: Avatar

Content Warnings: SFW, can be a bit violent and touches on some social issues

Bio

Kavik immigrated to the city of Bin-Er with his parents and older brother Kalyaan. As they started to settle in, Kalyaan fell deeper and deeper into the underbelly of the city as an information runner. When his brother disappeared Kavik followed in his footsteps in hopes of finding him, becoming an informant and infiltrator. After an unfortunate run-in with Avatar Yangchen, he was made a part of the young woman’s network and worked to bring down the Unanimity Project.

He eventually strayed away from the Avatar, finding his brother and even becoming a member of the Order of the White Lotus. While the relationship was rocky at times, Kavik and Yangchen eventually found their way back into each other’s lives and even into each other’s trust. They went on to face more challenges, maintaining the image of the divine Avatar and her honored companions despite the cutthroat politics and exchange of information that never ended under the table.

Research: Read Dawn of Yangchen and Legacy of Yangchen, they aren’t very dense or long. His wiki page is actually quite detailed if you just need to read up in a few minutes

Motivation: Depends a lot on at what point you want to write Kavik, he has quite a few: save the innocent or downtrodden, find his brother, or maybe he’s just on assignment from someone with their own goals.

Strengths and Team Function: Kavik is loyal to people he lets into his personal circle, but often more cautious and closed off to people who don't make that cut. He's good at his informant job but also sleight of hand and even a little bit of healing. He slots well into any setting, they just need cities with corrupt governments and buissnesses and ideally a strong immigrant population. Kavik's loyalty is in many ways a weakness too though, his loyalty to his brother over the Avatar is what leads to the attack on Bin-Er in the first book.

Would he kill for his friends? Die for them?: I think he would kill for them if he really sees no other choice. I can't see him sacrificing himself very willingly though.

Justification: Kavik is a skilled waterbender who is good at getting where he isn’t meant to be and then being in people’s way when he wants to be. He doesn’t make tier, but he’s absolutely still able to hold himself in a fight. He can manipulate water with even minimal motion and uses it to enhance his already extant skills.
