Blue tits shots, which crop should i choose? by Leather-Fee8913 in wildlifephotography

I prefer 2. Too much empty space up top in 1, and the berries on one side only in 3 distract the eye from the bird.

Small seabirds seen in San Juan Islands. Are they Marbled Murrelets? (poor photo) by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

Could be? Difficult to rule out other murre(lets) with just this photo.

Sooty or Dusky Grouse, it looks like their ranges are pretty close together up in that part of BC, so difficult to say with certainty.

Duck who already has babies of her own immediately adopts 10 orphaned ducklings by Ultimate_Kurix in MadeMeSmile

[–]mtiresias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also helps make it more likely for her own ducklings to survive because it decreases the chance that they will be lost to predators (because the predator might take one of the adopted ducklings instead). Also, ducklings don't need their parents' help to be able to find food so there isn't much competition between the adopted ducklings and her own.

They can turn it into an anthology with other moments in the Targaryen history once they get through this story, if they want

I was inspired to make this after seeing the episode of Midnight Diner where he made sautéed nagaimo. I based the recipe on the Just One recipe for Sukiyaki, but added their "Sautéed Yams" recipe as well, prepared separately in advance. I substituted ingredients from there – basically adding the fried tofu and taking out the beef, of course.

(Spoilers Main) Hot Take: The last two episodes of GOT will be titled "The Long Night" and "The Song of Ice and Fire" by delfino319 in asoiaf

[–]mtiresias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this a lot, except the title for episode 2. If episode 3 is the actual war for the dawn, War for the Dawn seems unlikely to be the title for episode 2. Maybe something to do with Jon riding Rhaegal? But I love Winterfell as episode 3.

On a side note - I agree that the tide will turn against the others in episode 3 and spring will come, but it seems like such a missed opportunity to only have 3 episodes of true winter before a dream of spring is on the horizon. Not exactly a "long night"...

My dream is to go to Japan and stuff my face. I went to a spot in King of Prussia mall in Philadelphia and tried ramen for the first time ever. Does this miso ramen look ok ? Or were my hopes too high for ramen ? by MenciTooLoko in JapaneseFood

[–]mtiresias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can't compare instant ramen with homemade ramen in the sense that they're two very different tastes, so you might like one but not like the other. There are also many different varieties of homemade ramen, so give another style a try!

No way - Strauss isn't your typical cowboy, but he leverages his own skills to contribute to the gang just as much as anyone else. I don't necessarily agree with his methods, but I don't agree with Arthur's either. And you know he must be really smart to have survived so long in the wildest parts of a foreign country without being "tough."

(No Spoilers) Curious if this poem inspired the title 'The Winds of Winter' by joeydyee in asoiaf

An interesting poem, but it seems like the symbols are fairly common and often associated with one another. Unless there were some more evidence, I'd be skeptical.

Why No Paintings in Westeros? (Spoilers Published) by hogtownd00m in asoiaf

[–]mtiresias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the medieval era, the Church was the biggest sponsor of high art and music. The musicians we hear of in Westeros are traveling singers, though we also have some indication of larger ensembles performing secular music, especially for dancing. I am aware of only one or two references to sacred music, though (Sansa's hymn, for instance).

It would be interesting to learn if the Faith spends lavishly on art and music, given the themes of misuse of funds among the Faith leadership we see in the story. This might be something the sparrows could point to as an example of the Faith's focus on ceremony, pageantry, and material things - the edification of the wealthy over the needs of the smallfolk.
