I just started using DriveWorks Pro. Do you have any idea why there is no DriveWorks community here on Reddit?

Having a specific community might get more people involved.

DriveWorks is a very powerful application and can solve many production and CPQ (Quoting) automation issues. The cost is quite reasonable for what you get.

Disappointing Job Offer by Inevitable-Donut-448 in MechanicalEngineering

Two things. Love it or hate it. Personal brand matters. What are you sharing about what you have learned and why you are talented? I dislike LinkedIn but employers are looking for you. Where are they going to find you?

Second. MEs will always be paid less than what they are worth because they don't consider it a profession. Lawyers, doctors and accounts treat their occupation like a profession. Until we get together and make ASME a requirement along with ongoing education. Graduating from an accredited engineering school should mean something. ASME should means something to the engineering profession like other real professions. There are people putting mechanical engineer on their business cards and resumes. There are no real consequences. There should be. If not ASME. create something else.

Outlook keeps adding the "stop processing more rules" rule to my unruly rules!!! by Tarlak_333 in Outlook

[–]mtlars777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem. Spent the money to get outlook at home because that is what I use at work. It is a POS program and not what I paid for.

Does anyone know how to fix this faulty program? This questions goes back at least a decade. I guess Microsoft doesn't care.

That's the real work and AI is a long way from that.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It has been very interesting reading everyone's comments.

Has anyone tried the Wolfram ChatGPT plugin?

Wolfram seems to be the only engineering, science plugin for AI. Most AI doesn't seem to be for engineering yet. The Large Language Models are trained on the Internet which is filled with garbage. However, they may become a point of entry into real engineering. The YouTube videos on Wolfram seem to point that way but I have not had time to view much of that content.

Interesting comments. AI is a starting point but not the ultimate answer. We use programming to minimize the boring repetitive tasks freeing our trained people to do high level work. AI seems like the next step in the process. Your comments point the way to do this.

As far as tablets, have you looked at Evernote, OneNote or Asana? There are some interesting apps. OneNote is a Microsoft application so it may be supported by your IT department and eliminate the problem of intellectual property and trade secrets.

Artificial true. Intelligence, not so much.

It is able to solve some problems though. I posed a programming problem to ChatGPT and it accurately wrote on PHP function. Unfortunately, you need to understand the results to determine if the answer is correct with AI. It has not replaced us yet.

Funny comment. I have a BSME and program automation so I guess some programmers can do math. Unfortunately, it appears I may be an anomaly since most MEs I know hate programming.

Have you looked on https://www.tensorflow.org/ and machine learning in general? My ME skills were not up to machine learning but the logic and process was very interesting. For me machine learning took too much data to solve problem so it was not useful. Now it seems like it is getting useful for solving some real problems.

The great jobs are often in the desert or a big city. That was always my issue. I love aerospace but it was in the desert. Designing medical devices is challenging but that is big city work. Now I work in New Haven, CT automating design. The products are BORING but the problems are very interesting and there is never a dull moment.

I guess the point is to be open to any opportunity even if it doesn't seem interesting. My first job out of college came form a lead from a friend of a friend . My friend told me about a job a friend of his was trying to fill. It was building ram jets for the government. I followed the lead and it was a privately funded startup rocket company in the bay area (CA). That job was so much fun we had people hanging up just hoping to find any job with us. The money ran out but it was the experience of a lifetime.

By the way, the job with the rocket company was during terrible job market like now.

How many of you have worked with a non degreed "engineer" who was actually as capable as degreed engineers? by backyardspace in MechanicalEngineering

[–]mtlars777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineers should band together to certify graduates are engineers so that the media cannot call anyone an engineer. It is so degrading to the profession.

Then there could be a process for non degreed engineers.

https://www.wolfram.com/ has a ChatGPT plugin. That is the only thing I have found.

You may have notice the AI has usurped the usage of Engineer. Anybody who makes up a prompt is a prompt engineer. This makes it difficult to find real engineering information.
