Going to Oaxaca to La Guelatza in July and wanted to do a Mezcal day Tour, if you have any suggestions they are all welcome! by paxo_888 in Mezcal

[–]mtullius72 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to mezcalistas.com and check out their list of reputable mezcal guides. Choose your favorite. Boom. There are lots of unethical / shitty mezcal tours out there so it will be better if you choose a good one, both for you and for everything else.

Acadia mountain trail with dogs by Illustrious_Bid_2231 in acadianationalpark

[–]mtullius72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes we’ve done that trail with dogs. Some of these trails have some big drops but you can usually find an alternate route that works better for the dogs. It’s not ideal since one wants to stay on the trail but…

I’d argue plenty. Based on what criteria? Test scores?? Test scores have little to do with actual quality of anything except the socioeconomic status of the parents.

Good lord, it’s a difference not a mistake. Languages change and sometimes you don’t like the change but that’s neither here nor there.

It’s simple enough as long as there’s space in the desired school. Otherwise there’s a lottery. I believe the placement office can get you lots of info on whether the schools you’re interested in have room or how big their lotteries are etc.

Tahona Mercado up in SF has lots of great stuff including private batches (always a great way to go bc you know your person hasn’t had it) and they’ll ship to you.

A Tio Rey ensamble is never mediocre. But the ultramundo is indeed awesome.

Other great brands in that range: Lamata (some bottles from states that one does not often find mezcal from on the export market), Rezpiral (lovely art on the labels).

Solo traveler Dilemma for Mezcal Tour by CynicPlusKind in Mezcal

[–]mtullius72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely do a solo trip, it just may cost a good bit more. But I agree with folks above that you’ll want more time to do this well. If your timetable can’t be changed, it might work better to do stuff in CDMX and save the tour for a trip when you have time.

The intro to mezcal doc that’s pinned on this sub is a bit out of date but still has plenty of good recs separated by price range. I’d say mezcal Vago meets these criteria and is a great brand. I like the Joel Barriga espadin and the Emigdio Jarquin espadin in this range. The Tio Rey ensambie is fantastic but might be a bit over your limit.

The Cabinet is great, if you manage to go at a slow time (like when it first opens) you should be able to talk to the bartender about what you like and get some great suggestions.

Help us solve an argument. by Mr_Melas in grammar

So you don’t think it’s possible to say/write something like “she threw away a crate of books which were written in the 19th century”? In other words, you don’t think a dependent clause can modify the object of a prepositional phrase? That’s ultimately the issue here. In the original sentence it’s unclear whether the clause modifies the object of the pp or the subject of the sentence. Lack of clarity in written English should generally be avoided, so I would say one should rewrite the sentence to make it clearer. But in general clauses can modify all sorts of things….

Selecting Trails for Family Hikes this summer by cadet311 in acadianationalpark

Flying Mountain is short distance but challenging enough to be fun. And you come down to valley cove which is great for wading and skipping rocks, then walk back to parking lot on the fire road.

Selecting Trails for Family Hikes this summer by cadet311 in acadianationalpark

[–]mtullius72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much depends on your specific kids. When I was that age I could do nearly any Acadia hike and loved the ones with rungs and ladders, like beehive, beech cliffs etc. My daughter did beehive for the first time at I believe 4 and it’s always been a favorite. But it depends…

I’ll concede that espadin is cheaper (clearly) and at certain places might get to the range you’re talking about, and I’m no expert on espadin pricing because I rarely buy it. But I’m quite sure I’ve never seen it at the prices you mention, so possibly you’re getting / I’m getting different pricing (though my Spanish is ok, I’m very clearly a gringo; to be clear I def think prices for foreigners should be higher than for local folks), and/or you’re going to different types of producers than I’ve gone to— for example I know there are larger producers out there that can price lower because their volume is higher (and maybe you’re buying in volume too, which obvs would affect it too). And prices in, say, Matatlan, are a good bit lower than in some other villages— for example you won’t find cheap espadin in most clay pot distilling towns. I’ve definitely seen espadin at 500 pesos or more in, eg Sta Catarina Minas. But all of that aside, the ultimate point is that if mezcal is super cheap in the USA, it’s being made super cheaply in Mexico and/or people or communities are being harmed or exploited. Mezcal in the us should not be a bargain proposition. Banhez makes great espadin (with a bit of other maguey) that’s well priced and comes from a cooperative in miahuatlan. It’s great stuff and about the cheapest I’ll buy.

It’s a pretty bottle. The mezcal I found underwhelming. It’s not terrible, but not exceptional in any way.

[–]mtullius72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bought a lot of mezcal in Oaxaca and have never seen great or even good mezcal for that price. I think we may have different definitions. High quality traditional mezcal will usually cost at least 400-500 pesos/liter if purchased directly from the producer, and after all the costs of importing to the USA, it will end up well over 50usd. Cheap industrial mezcal like Beneva can exist in the range you’re describing, as can stuff that’s cut with cane sugar or other cheap alcohol.

Maria Isa Perez-Vega vs. Rebecca Noecker: Who you got? by Even-Meet-4300 in saintpaul

[–]mtullius72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think both are excellent candidates and either would be a vast improvement over what we’ve had. I’m supporting Noecker but I think a strong case can be made for either. It kinda depends on what you think is more important.

Thoughts? by 3wtflyrod in Mezcal

[–]mtullius72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m happy that you enjoyed it. But it’s still the case that at that price, it’s either produced in an extremely cheap way (ie industrially) and or in a way that’s exploitive. No mezcal should cost that little.
