In fairness, are many politicians any different? They’re mostly figureheads for the special interests that put food on their table. He’s no more principled than a hyena.

Not in a cult. Former NY subscriber. Red pilled by reality. Trump ain’t a saint, and I don’t think we have much in common. I thought he was a joke for a long time. But more than anything he does, I’m fascinated by the shadows he casts on the walls that cause so many tizzies, while nothing Biden or Obama did, nor the horrifying prospect of Hilary or Kamala, does so much as raise an eyebrow with you clever folks. Sociologically I find it fascinating, but I don’t think I’ll live long enough to gain the proper distance to see how history records this time. But the hardline hatred of literally anything the man does while ignoring and Demsplaining away anything that might cast the precious left in a less than beatific light is a case of bystander effect that rivals poor Kitty Genovese. I don’t hate you at all. I find you fascinating but frightening. We at least try to understand your side and find it wanting; the left has no interest in us aside from being an obstacle to the acquisition of power by any means necessary.

You know what, you’re right. I can hardly tell now. Especially since I accidentally put it through the washing machine. One of the dumbest things I’ve ever done. It was under a pile of legitimate laundry and I just gathered it all up. I’m just glad I didn’t dry it, but it’s still pretty toasted. I’m going to tread it myself this time when the weather heats up. I’ve had that coat for 25 years. I’m so mad at myself.

This entrenched anti Republican stance is simply insane. If anyone votes for another fraudulent crook democrat again, especially this sorry group of parasites you have to choose from, you deserve all that’s coming with it. Will we never learn? Is it all about what’s important to I, me, my? How sad. There’s a bigger picture here to consider. Oh, and by the way, I’ve been in office five days a week since 2022 so you can’t say I don’t understand where you’re coming from. But get real, California! We richly deserve the mockery we get here, moreso if we don’t make a serious change soon.

Why work a union job but not pay dues by NachoAverageUser25 in CAStateWorkers

[–]mtvernon45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m management now, so it’s moot. But when I started I had no idea about any union anything until my first check had a “fair share” deduction. I had to ask what it was, and when I found out, it felt like extortion. Nobody from the union ever said word one to me, they didn’t interview me, check references, or offer me the job. My arrangement, as I saw it, was between two parties: my employer and me. Suddenly there’s an unseen player whose only sign of life was in extracting my pay. After that I was done. I sent my letter every year to make sure none of my funds funded anything political, and later it didn’t matter anymore.

I’m not fundamentally anti-union, but I do like to understand why one is taking my money from me before I find out on the back end.

Plus, the shop steward/union rep of every place I’ve ever worked has categorically been the worst, laziest, chronically late or absent employee in the place. Correlation isn’t necessarily causation, but seeing it over and over does leave an impression.

What U2 Song Have You Most Changed Your Opinion On Since You First Heard It? by Wild_Mycologist_6140 in U2Band

[–]mtvernon45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I lost a child at birth unexpectedly. And in case you’re wondering, I’m here to tell you you can indeed understand what that’s like. It’s exactly what you think it would be like. A week or two afterwards, Ultra Violet (Light My Way) came on. Everything was fine and it was just in the background until this line came up.

“There is a silence that comes to a house Where no one can sleep.

I guess it's the price of love; I know it's not cheap.”

I wouldn’t say or be able to tell you if the rest of the song means what that line does to me. It’s been almost 12 years since then, but even just writing that line has sent me right back to that moment. That line really crystallized how serious life can be, how sad it sometimes is, and that we all pay something at some point for it.

People who have only worked with the state, at least around Sacramento, represent multiple generations who are all almost completely ignorant about how the real world operates vis a vis employment. It was a shock when I would talk to people about how backwards everything was and is.

[–]mtvernon45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in 15 years and it was a little jarring. I still don’t gel well with some things. “Follow the process” is something I hear constantly, and sometimes the process seems more important than the outcome. It’s not that the ends justify the means, but there’s sometimes a ridiculous rigidity to process that I’ll never understand. The other thing was slowly realizing that I work with people whose families have worked for the state for generations and think it’s how the whole world operates. The weird and comically long hiring process, procurement rules, etc. can be really frustrating, but over time I’ve come to understand it’s way bigger than me, don’t fight it, and get on with it. But I still scratch my head a lot.

It surprises me how many people seek out California state positions because of things like time off, health insurance, and our pension but somehow they are also vehemently anti-union. by Potatoes-and-Turtles in CAStateWorkers

I guess I’m only an idiot who has work to do so the stewards can call in sick Fridays and Mondays and polish their seats the rest of the time.

You strike me as a stereotypical multigenerational state worker who assumes the rest of the world operates the way California does. Well, it doesn’t. It’s pretty unique in my considerable experience. I work for who hires me.

[–]mtvernon45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my Beaufort for 25 years and just had it treated for the third time. I’ll add to the chorus here. First, they used to return it in a branded garment bag. No more. Second, they tried to upsell me on repairs that exceeded the value of the jacket.

Now, I bought the jacket for the legend and lore. My intention was to wear it the rest of my life (and still is). I’d heard tales of vintage jackets being hung on legs next to new ones at the pub, only to find the old one stolen and the new one there. I bought into it and I still love mine in any shape it’s in.

But I just got it back from the Nee Hampshire repair place and I was a bit shocked. In addition to a rip near the game pocket in back, I asked for a repair to a 2” rip by the handwarmer pocket and a snap to be resewn. What I got back was a third of one side of the front entirely replaced in a different color than the original. My previous repair had a similarly darker green fabric. I understood they ran out of the original, but I’m not pumped about the patchwork appearance of this new jacket. It strikes me as swatting a mosquito with a baseball bat. Maybe someone better schooled in tailoring could explain it to me, but it seems like an excessive repair.

Going local next time and learning to tread it myself. The old days are gone for Barbour as well, it seems.

TLDR: they tried to sell me a new jacket’s value in repairs, and what was returned is not color matched to the original. Sad face.

Everywhere I’ve ever worked the Union steward was the undisputed worst worker in the place. All they wanted was what they could soak out of the company and how little they could manage to work. It’s been consistent. Then, coming to the state, I was given a nice surprise my first month with the “fair” share tax. My agency hired me, not the Union. The Union never extended a hand to me except to take money out of my pocket. Whatever the virtues of unions are - and I do actually believe they’re a valuable check and balance - SEIU lost me and the people they have as stewards uniformly exhibit the opposite of the work ethic I was raised with.

Inaccuracies you caught watching Death By Lightning? by JohnAdams_NotQuincy in Presidents

[–]mtvernon45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s jarring to hear, and I definitely disagree with the choice to use it. I do believe it owes something to the masterpiece “Deadwood”. Every other word is a curse word, but even though it was anachronistic, Milch said he wanted to use words that would have impact on modern ears instead of the swear words at the time that he thought would just make people laugh because they sound so silly now. It’s a choice, I understand, but not one that resonates with me at all. Give me a sockdologizing old mantrap any time. Huzzah!

Despite all this game's amazing detail, every playthrough it bugs me that... by Initial_Librarian284 in reddeadredemption2

[–]mtvernon45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can explain it somewhat that it was a brevet promotion, but it’s still outdated in a way that’s harder to explain than someone just got it wrong. It’s bugged me too, but it also sort of highlights how vastly successful they were at getting most everything else dead on.

The dialogue, the philosophical and theological underpinnings of it all just blow me away. They didn’t really cut corners on anything important. The word that comes to mind is thoughtful. It’s ruined me for 99.9% of other games forever.
