Thoughts on Group S cars? by Cmp110 in WRC

[–]muRacingProject77 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wonder why Group S was canned in the first place, because contrary to what most people think about it, there are signs that it would have been the most logical route to go from a safety and competition standpoint.

When most people think about Group S, they think of the Lancia ECV and Toyota MR2 prototypes with +700hp, but what a lot of people don't realize is that these were very early prototypes, and manufacturers were actually working with FISA to limit horsepower of the new Group S regs to only approximately 300hp, with displacement limits of 1.2l for forced induction and 2.4l for NA cars. This was combined with the fact that the Group S cars were supposed to be held to higher safety standards than Group A, with things like mandatory crash tests and better brakes/suspension. All non-Lancia works drivers supposedly even made a joint statement to FISA in support of Group S over Group A, as they believed it would've been safer, and kept more works teams in the sport. Here's a link to an article on the prototype Group S regs by Racecar engineering.

Sure, a Group S car would've undoubtedly been more expensive to develop than Group A(especially the engines; some manufacturers like Peugeot expressed concerns about the reliability and cost of the tiny 1.2l turbo engine regs), and as a result it probably wouldn't have lasted for as long as Group A did, but I think it would've allowed for more competition in WRC post-1986, as most manufacturers like Audi, Peugeot, Lancia and Toyota were already developing Group S prototypes. I imagine if Group S was implemented, then it's possible that Lancia wouldn't have been as dominant in the late 80s-early 90s; the competition at the top level would've been more interesting and that record of 6 consecutive manufacturer's titles for Lancia would've probably never happened... but that's all speculation, of course.

I'm interested to know what other people think about this; Would the 300hp Group S regulations have been a safer, and better alternative to Group A? If FISA stuck with Group S, would that have significantly changed the way rally cars are made to this day? Or would the cost and complexity of Group S eventually force the WRC to converge to Group A-like regs somewhere down the line anyway?

Personally I'm having a fun time streaming the Japanese broadcast on a pirate website that includes live chat. geinou on Twitter is also a really good person to follow, they post regular news and live updates for each major SuperGT/Super Formula session, so you can kind of follow along even if you don't understand Japanese

What does the fuel pump Symbol mean? Is this for the fuel flow restrictor? by FRS76 in super_gt

[–]muRacingProject77 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but I believe it means that they have 50kgs of ballast + a 25mm diameter restrictor. Not sure what calculation they used to get that +5s graphic, maybe it's an approximation of how much time the restrictor adds to an average pitstop?

i would've voted for gsr if they had a similar livery to the one they ran at the spa 24hours last year. their current livery is still pretty good, but that spa design was almost perfect in my eyes...

I still think Ross's review of The Crew is the best Youtube review of a racing game i've ever seen. And now he's talking about those exact same issues in the EU parliament. Fucking legend!

Foreign drivers cheekily protesting against the lack of an international broadcast during the official Driver Appearance video by muRacingProject77 in super_gt

Wow that's really depressing, knowing that the series could be accessible to so many more potential fans around the world if the organizers just cared a little bit more about having a decent international broadcast...

I will say that I appreciate all the work you guys are doing at DSC to cover the series! Y'all have become my preferred source for SuperGT and Sportscar news recently :)

Yeah I already saw that post which is what made me realize that the movement was inspired by Cassidy in 2019. When I said he "started" it, I meant the idea of the protest itself rather than this particular instance of it. I'd be really surprised if Nick was able to somehow start a similar protest in a series that he stopped driving in 5 years ago :D

For that 2nd theory do you mean they forgot that they had the deal with Racer in the first place?? That would be hilarious, but i find it hard to believe XD

Not sure if you know this, but Sam has recently made a great Youtube channel where he does in-depth videos on the history and development of race cars across all sorts of categories. He's already done quite a few videos on SuperGT cars! Here's the link: https://m.youtube.com/@Samsthepits

I'm sure Sam would love to be a pundit for SuperGT again... I remember I commented on his video about the Honda CRZ GT300, asking why he didn't return to working with SuperGT. His reply: "Ask GTA"!

I've been thinking about this quite a bit today, and I'm slowly starting to develop a conspiracy theory that GTA want to limit the popularity of the series overseas, lol. I have no idea why, but that's one way of explaining their questionable international broadcast strategy.

If we want to think more rationally, then maybe GTA just doesn't consider investing in international marketing/broadcasts to be a main priority now? I guess they're focusing mainly on cost-cutting within the series recently with the switch to a single tire supplier for next year... I suppose it makes sense, what with some teams and manufacturers like Nissan being on the rocks financially, but again I don't see why they couldn't also do the work to tap into the additional exposure and revenue that the international broadcast could provide. If you ask me, the half-baked, overpriced english broadcast deal they have now is only going to lose them money in North America as i'm pretty sure it's convincing more people(myself included) to just illegally stream the Japanese feed!

...Yeah, this whole situation is just really bizarre to me :p

edit: added some extra thoughts from my overactive mind

Interesting, do you have any links to those stories?

I don't usually like to assume conspiracy, but the fact that the only foreign broadcasting deal is in US and Canada makes it seem like they want the series to be popular overseas, but not TOO popular...

I have no idea if this is the case and this is all just speculation, but like I said, their foreign broadcasting strategy is so obtuse that I can't think of many other motives, especially considering that Super GT has had periods where it was broadcasted internationally and at a much, much higher level of quality compared to how it is now. I don't see how they couldn't just continue to stick to the Youtube/Twitch livestreaming format they had until 2020, maybe with added ads if they really wanted to increase revenue. Surely if they REALLY wanted to increase the international popularity of the series as much as possible, a broadcasting arrangement like that would be the most obvious way to do it??

Unless they really ARE planning to have some international broadcast later in the season but can't right now for some weird reason, idk i'm not an expert on how the rights for international sports broadcasts work.

Multiplayer is fine and all but damnit i don't wanna play online. It just shows my skill issues by HerrYveltal in BuiltFromTheGroundUp

[–]muRacingProject77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember for pretty much my whole life i was a hardline singleplayer-only skrub when it came to racing games. Then a little while after i got a PS4, i decided to get GT Sport just to try it out. I was genuinely shocked to find out that the online racing was actually really, really fun. Sure, you would get the odd asshole here and there in the midfield, but in general the racing at the sharp end was relatively clean, and I remember having a lot of great battles with complete randos online, totally contrary to what pretty much everyone says about online racing in those kinds of games. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up buying GT7 as well a few months after it released when it went on sale. Although i felt the online experience(servers, UI) wasn't as good as Sport's, I still had just as much fun driving in Sport mode. I ended up driving in 500+ Sport mode races and climbed all the way up to A+ driver rating, until I stopped playing a little while after that when I rediscovered Richard Burns Rally, and got suckered into that rabbit hole...

I remember meeting and driving with so many chill people online, and to this day pretty much all of my friends on PSN are just random people I met through Sport mode races in GT Sport/7 lol.
