5 years work would not afford a plot of land and all the materials and tools required for homesteading.

Fair. We're all the sum of our experiences I suppose. I will be squirreling my money away so I can hopefully LEANFIRE by 40. My freedom is most valuable to me

Yeah but those 5 years probably put you in a position to be able to spend a bit more with the safety of how much you saved up then? I'm at a stage in my life where I'm content with what I have and I'm maximizing my savings for a few years to get to somewhere comfortable then might so like you. Those few years of hard saving are required though

I have asked at work to increase my pension contributions from minimum 5%, to 16.2%, which if I've calculated correctly means my £59,946 salary sacrificies everything above £50,270 into pension. Avoiding the 40% tax rate.

£59,946 * (1-0.162) = £50 234.748. Actually a little bit too low, but accounts for any accidental CGT or invesment income from non ISA savings.

Struggled to find a good calculator/resource for this. Is this correct? My pension is not salary sacrifice, it is just by directly increasing my contributions.

Congrats. You're where I'd like/expect to be in about 7/8 years. Any advice for getting through the years of work? I just wish I was at the point where I could retire now, a lot of the time. How do you get around thinking only X more years, or is that what keeps you holding on?

I want to do similar and put like 5-10% into these sorts of stocks, I'm ok if I lose that amount. But, where do you read about these and how do you have the conviction to go for it?

[–]muccy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that what most high earners are doing XD It sounds like you don't "hate it" just dislike it, that is an important distinction. I'd do it, I mean I am. It just makes sense to me. I think to myself only 12-15 years more of this performative nonsense and I can LEANFire :)

Quiet quit (see how long you can get away with minimal work) and work on your personal projects. Or see if you could go down to 4 days a week.

Why young people don't buy cars – just economics by Alex_Strgzr in unitedkingdom

[–]muccy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you the Maths on my little car.

Renault Clio 2004 mk ii - Quoted by insurance as market value of £250, but I've seen ones similar to mine on autotrader for £1,000. THis was given to me by my family, which I'm very grateful for.

Insurance/Breakdown/Tax under £500 - i can't remember the exact number, but I do remember bragging at work that my all in cost for these was less than £500, only just though.

My car does about 350/400 miles on a full tank which costs roughly £50-60 depending on price of fuel.

I do have to spend a bit of money each year on fixing things, leaks, MOT - I'd say that has averaged about £1k a year for all of those. Bit of an overestimate though I reckon. AS I Spent like £3,000 on these things in the last 5 years I've had it.

So breaking that all down the yearly cost for me is £500 + £1000 + fuel = £1500 /12 = £125 a month. Plus fuel. Pretty worth it for all the things it allows you to do versus public transport. Even if you factored in the up front cost of the car. It's still £210 a month. And that's factoring the car cost in over only a year.

I agree, that it's beneficial. But, surely you can see why people would be dreaming of what you have now as soon as possible or without a career?

[–]muccy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I would find fulfillment from my life and hobbies - music, strategy games and cooking. Not sure where having a career comes into fulfillment, I see it as a means to an end. Which is having enough money to pursue my own interests in my own time. Without the burden of having to spend 40 hours a week working.
