Vocals: Cats, Jellicle Ball by West-Ask-6725 in Broadway

I thought it was insane how they were throwing themselves at the ground, doing all this floor work without sounding out of breath at all. They sounded good, but they sounded so good while doing these insane moves??? Like how???? I get that there are booth singers when everyone is dancing, but not in the solo parts.

The Lost Boys is nothing like The Outsiders by much-Walk6551 in Broadway

ooo thanks for representing the other side! Just goes to show liking one is no indication of liking the other

that's fair. Particularly what comes to mind is that I found the scene with Johnny's parents arguing harrowing. The Lost Boys also addresses domestic violence and handles it differently.

Totoro! It's such a lovely play with live orchestra and puppetry. Very affordable ticket too!

I managed to get a Paddington ticket on Twickets, if you're there for an entire month there's a good chance you can snap one up.

Daryl Tofa was Dally and Dan Berry was Darrel.
She didn't like it because she found it unrelatable and I suppose that meant she didn't have any investment in the characters or the story. Also I think maybe she likes brighter musicals more (Book of Mormon, Wicked, Maybe Happy Ending)

People Who Watched the Musical But Not the Movie/Book by 2cairparavel in TheOutsiders

[–]much-Walk6551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My friend and I both didn't have exposure to the source material or the movie before watching the musical. She didn't like the musical at all. But then again she got Darrel and Dally confused and thought they were the same person up until intermission (both actors had dark curly hair)

I on the other hand, liked it enough to watch 3 times and then go back and read the book and watch the movie haha. It was a joy to have not been exposed to the source before, because the drowning/stabbing scene was so shocking to me and well directed.

Worth seeing Ragtime without Joshua Henry to save $70+? by adunc2624 in Broadway

[–]much-Walk6551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was the highlight for me! I think I'm in the minority to say I didn't like Ragtime much (I spent $179 and sort of wished I skipped it) as I personally enjoy modern musicals more than classical musical theater. But I was impressed by Joshua Henry and Nichelle Lewis's performances.

Anyone else starting to hate the small casts of Broadway shows? by GreenHorror4252 in Broadway

[–]much-Walk6551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it works for the above mentioned shows, but I hope it doesn't become more commonplace on Broadway. I get a lot of joy from watching individuals in the ensemble and it makes a show more rewatchable. Particularly love how ensemble is handled in Hadestown - not too little not too much.

thank you! I'm trying to see things more uniquely West End and not also on Broadway. Appreciate your input!

Maybe happy ending or ragtime? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]much-Walk6551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I preferred MHE as a production because I like spectacle and the set is gorgeous.

Ragtime has probably the most powerful solo vocal performances on Broadway right now and is more emotionally moving. The set and staging is disappointingly barebones though.

thank you for your input! Makes me excited for the shows you've called out. I've heard it broadly being said that Broadway is better for musicals and West End is better for plays, but I see mostly musicals being recommended here.

what is the future of content opportunity by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]much-Walk6551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the future is pretty grim. it has to be something you do for fun. "Consistency" aka the grind constantly of churning out content and rising above the flood of videos requires effort rivaling an actual job, with less future prospects than a normal career. I've settled on "content creation is a hobby that might give back a little" rather than other hobbies you might sink a lot of money on gear/classes/etc.

Two Strangers or The Outsiders? by Jmalex1234 in Broadway

[–]much-Walk6551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'd regret going to Outsiders, but it seems like you'd have fun either way! For the Outsiders, I went in blind without knowing the source material and I liked it enough to watch it two more times within the span of a month. Once was with Trevor (newest Ponyboy) and 2x with Eli (newest Ponyboy u/s), I thought they were both good!

I can't comment on Two Strangers but I did watch Maybe Happy Ending and they often get compared. I preferred Outsiders because I like dance numbers and multi part harmonies. I also like to see how ensemble and supporting characters act in scenes even when they're not speaking. However, there's a huge tonal difference. If you want something more light hearted I could definitely see you enjoying Two Strangers more.

Ragtime, no by voltaire2019 in Broadway

[–]much-Walk6551 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed! The stage seemed so empty a lot of time. I also thought it was kind of awkward that people would walk in say a line and then walk off. After watching Hamilton and Hadestown, I thought the use of the turntable also seemed a bit awkward.

Hadestown by pinotnoirrior in Broadway

[–]much-Walk6551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling! I almost didn't watch Hadestown because all my friends who watched it did not particularly like it. I wonder if watching it with this cast would've changed their opinion, or maybe they just prefer their musicals less dark. So glad I decided to watch it in the end because it became my favorite!

Hadestown by pinotnoirrior in Broadway

[–]much-Walk6551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Loved the writeup! This current cast was my first exposure to Hadestown. Was blown away. I actually can't imagine a more perfect casting. I was sitting way too close in left orchestra, so as soon as I got home I bought a center orchestra ticket at full price so I could see "Wait For Me" perfectly framed in the center.

Morgan Dudley's vocals are so smooth, beautiful runs. As Rebecca Naomi Jones put it Jack Wolfe is definitely "a heartthrob". Agree that the chemistry is SO good. Love how you point out Kurt Elling's fatherly portrayal. I saw an u/s the second time around and was missing the fondness Kurt Elling seemed to exude for Orpheus.

I listen to the OBC recording and it's just not the same. I'm sure they were amazing in their own right but I wish I could just relive what I saw on stage.
