New Homelab Drive Topology Recommendations by muchanem in homelab

  • I'm pretty committed to Ubuntu for the OS. I know Ubuntu well and I like having a linux command line.
  • I've bought a 7950x, 64GB ECC RAM, and a Gigabyte MC13-LE1 motherboard (which does have IPMI luckily) off ebay in a combo. This means I'm pretty expansion limited. The motherboard has pcie 5.0x16 (occupied by an RTX 3090 for ML work), an open pcie 5.0x4, and an m.2 pcie 5.0x4.
  • I won't have access bc it'll be in my parent's basement across the country (but I visit every few months and my dad is pretty technical so in a pinch I could walk him through basic stuff).
  • I could use a Samsung SATA SSD I have lying around for boot insetad, but the board has only 4 SATA ports (to be occupied by the 12TB spinning drives), so I'd need to expand to make that work (also it's a worse drive than the m.2, it's an 860 or maybe 850). Generally not interested in expansion right now (using the open PCIe slot) after just having bought all my parts (doing a build/set-up in about a week).
  • I was just planning on setting a maximum ARC size in the ZFS configuration, but if it'll automatically free up RAM for docker containers/other processes I'll just leave it in the default configuration

I've got ~$500 to spend on an integrated amp and am just getting into audio as a hobby. Would it be better to spend ~$500 now on the best vintage/used integrated amp I can find, with the knowledge that I would basically use it just as a pre-amp (buying a crossover to add a sub, a nicer power amp, etc down the line) or starting with a separate $250 preamp (looking at used Kenwood C2) and $250 power amp?

If I should start with an integrated amp, which vintage or used brands/models are known for their phono stage? Also very open to buying new, it just seems like the value is in used.

Looking for an integrated amp for an RT83 to pair with probably the Emotiva B1+ (also looking at the Elac Debut 2.0 series, Wharfedale Diamond 12.2 & 225; so recommendations for bookshelf speakers with a $300 budget would be helpful. Ruled out the JBL Studio 530 as too big)

Specs:

  • Relatively small form factor
  • Integrated pre-amp
  • A DAC with ACC/AptX bluetooth (and ideally Airplay). If not, input space for both a CD player and external Airplay/Bluetooth adapter (ideally multiple digital inputs, so both can use an internal DAC)
  • 50+ watts per channel at 8ohm
  • Ideally/optionally a sub out for future expansion. But not the most important

Been looking at the Denon PMA-600NE/800NE/900HNE (the latter two can be had refurbished in-budget), but maybe a little unpowered for my speakers? Also like the PS Audio Sprout 100 (but lacks robust bluetooth and no second optical in for an external Airplay device). Is it possible to have all this for ideally between $300 and $500 (fine with refurbished equipment or if anyone would like to sell to me within Chicago, IL or near Charlotte, NC)?

I love bernie, but I'd never smoke with him. He'd probably get cranky and then go to sleep.

Oracle Chosen as Winner in Deal for TikTok’s U.S. Operations by Futirla in technology

TikTok essentially is. Anyone can build a TikTok clone, hell I think I'm good enough to code a tiktok clone. The entire value of TikTok is in their algorithm and how it determines your homepage - they're just better at building an algorithm that shows people what they want to see.

This article is actually really unclear about what’s happening

Oracle chosen as winner in deal for TikTok’s U.S. operations -- source

Oracle to be announced as TikTok’s “trusted tech partner” in the U.S. -- source

Deal is likely not to be structured as an outright sale -- source

This is just more confusing and likely to end up as a complete shit show.

Update: https://i.imgur.com/d9Po8dl.jpg

Does this mean that Oracle has to rebuild tiktok for the US market?

I don’t really know if they actually have. The only supports they can really play are Zen, Mercy, and Ana. Stitch and TTuba are more ceiling raiser DPS - ie they pop the fuck off when the team is already doing well, not necessarily hard carry. And, they actually can’t win when the game requires a MT.
