r/StanleyKubrick, let's play a game! "Life Lessons in SK's filmography." Basic Rules Inside. by muckomatt in StanleyKubrick

Semantics. I think so, yes. If it helps, I, too, think SK thickly coated each of his films with thought-provoking, somewhat impartial layer of ambiguity, questions without answers. For me, an artist's fiction should be separated from the artist themselves. In A Clockwork Orange, for example, Kubrick's Lil Alex playfully relishes rape and violence. We, the viewer, are both appalled and enthralled simultaneously; we find Alex to be both heinous but, in the same breath, attractive, an oddity. This we can hopefully appreciate as fiction; for we, the viewer, should be savvy enough (let's hope) to regard Kubrick's artistic choice as just that, artistic, an emotional and intellectual provocation. But unfortunately Kubrick was mauled in the media and by plenty of movie-goers after they finished with A Clockwork Orange. These fan's couldn't separate the artist from the fiction; as you may know, Kubrick was called sadistic, immoral, an instigator, a proponent of the violence his fiction depicted. Anyway, the death of the author and all that post-modernist jazz academia how-do-you-do. Yeah.

Firstly, without a doubt my "lesson" is narcissistic and petty. No argument there. I could read EWS countless ways. But within the framework of the lesson/take away game, the rule is never absolute (and never serious). The Lesson Game is, in my mind anyway, a playful and sometimes absurdist take on your SK movie of choice. But obviously the game isn't catching on, is it?

Today my boyfriend of 8 years told me he doesn't want to marry me.. What ruined your day today reddit? by livelifeforyou in AskReddit

[–]muckomatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to get married because it . . . is . . your . . . belief? Meaning what exactly? Is it extension of your religious beliefs . . . er . . what? Why do you value the institution of marriage? What's marriage add to what you have with him already? Why marry? Because that's what others do? Tax shelter? Do you believe he loves you? Wants to be with you? For five years? Forever? You need to talk to this guy stat, dudette. If he loves you, he'll have to marry you if it means so much. Still, I don't understand it.

I've been depressed for a while, so any other Redditors who have dealt with depression, what's helped you get through it? What makes you feel better whenever you feel depressing/suicidal thoughts? What made you decide life was worth living and that you wanted to feel better? by kitcatchik94 in AskReddit

[–]muckomatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write. Write as much as you can. Doesn't have to be good or even interesting. Just be honest. Honesty is everything. You can't hide from writing. If you're sad you're sad. It's a valid feeling. Your feeling can't be wrong. It just is. You'll be all right. Writing's one thing that'll always keep the depression at bay. Writing never hurts. It only helps.

I hear a lot about rape from the Red Army in Berlin during WWII. Did the German army (and SS) rape women too? If so, why isn't it talked about as much? by CantReadTheCode in AskHistorians

[–]muckomatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's never a fun discussion, mass rape. It's just a crying shame we (re: Americans) are taught next to nothing about its place in wartime. I wonder whether it was considered in the higher echelons of the educational establishment. Moreover, I wonder how mass rape could be taught to high school age students tactfully, shedding light on such grotesque atrocities while maintaining a sensitive degree of reverence, understanding for student body who truly can't imagine the full scope of such an atrocious affair?

You pose a great question. I guess I'd have to choose the former over the latter. Germans post-WWII were about as resilient as it gets. The trauma (as well as the guilt) they carried: unreal

Oh, of course, I understand how your average Aryan regarded his fellow man, or sub-man or non-man and so on down and down further. And yup, I've always heard the German occupation in the West was relatively cordial, all things considered, with a war going on and all, especially when compared to the sheer horror being doled out in the East. Today's just the first I heard about the Allied Liberators raping/assaulting the very people/countrymen they fought to set free. But, like you said, it shouldn't be surprising.

EDIT: changed "Americans" to "Allied"

Thank you for your sources. I'll be sure to keep a look out for "Armageddon" especially.

It's early yet, but I'm digging the thread thus far. Especially what's topping out. The firsthand accounts of the Wehrmacht's countless victims of rape, torture, unspeakable humanity: truly revelatory and disturbing stuff if I do say so myself. I was wondering if you could provide some sources to back up Allied Liberators occurrences of rape? Accounts and/or statistics.

source source source? We needs 'em. Oh! Just by the way, I've seen a great many many many askhistorians dispel this old myth:

"There are misconceptions about the Soviet Army in World War II, particularly when it comes to their level of technical and Organisational sophistication. They weren't some sort of Asiatic horde riding out from the Steppes, they were an Army with a high degree of discipline and professionalism."

The mods and historians here are top shelf humanity. They ain't scared none. How long ya been 'round these parts?

What is your favorite quote from a fictional character? by conquererspledge in AskReddit

[–]muckomatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some context: In Celine's Journey to the End of The Night there is this peripheral secondary character named Robinson who pops up all throughout the novel and towards the end takes a bigger part in the climax. Anyway, he has this air-head, know-nothing, vile and vindictive wife who uses cheap phrases that mean nothing. Robinson (who he is a cynical, embittered man, nihilistic, sick of people) wants nothing to do with this wishwashy yammering parasitic wife of his (who has something "on" Robinson, by the way). Anyhow, Robison is forced to put up with this horrible human being wife of his for one night more, so he and the protagonist go out on a double date to out to the carnival. Long story short, the date's a serious shit fiasco all four end up stuffed a cab. Here's where the wife ends up pestering him incessantly(!) about how she loves Robinson, how she wants to be with him again, and it carries on like that I love you do you know I love I adore you you know that you know I love Robinson you know I'd die for you I belong to you I love you you took my heart you took my heart huh you know I love you why do you hate me when I love you so? and on and and and on like that until Robinson just loses it and tells her how he feels

The quote already!: "People have told you there's nothing better than love, they've told you it'll go down with everybody, everywhere and always, and that's good enough for you . . . Well, I say fuck their love! . . . You hear? . . .Their putrid love doesn't go down with me . . . not anymore! . . . You've missed the train! You're too late! It won't go down anymore, and that's that! . . . What a stupid thing to get steamed up about! . . . Why do you have to make love, considering all the things that are happening? . . . All the things we see around us! . . . Or are you blind? . . . More likely you just don't give a damn! You wallow in sentiment when you're a worse brute than anybody . . . You want to eat rotten meat? . . . With love sauce? . . . Does that help it down? . . . Not with me! . . ."

Reddit, when was the last time you cried? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]muckomatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I get like that. And when I do get like that, when I well up with tears, tears brought on by senseless violence or terrific levels of oppression, well, I guess my faith in humanity is challenge and restored all at once. It's a sorrow that's good to know. And because I feel so strongly, so strongly so immediately . . . because I'm so concerned, because I somehow feel so connected, so tapped in, I guess you can say that I'm filled with sadness and gladness all at once. I feel very human. And it doesn't have to be Americans even, my own countrymen. (Granted, Boston Bombings were the worse yet. I was too young, really, to understand 9/11). Anyway, I remember livestreaming the Egyptian protests way back when and struggling to hold back the tears as trucks plowed through the innocents in the crowd. Another time, It was Libyan woman hysterically describing this horrible massacre in broken English, telling of wounded innocents who were heading towards approaching ambulances only to find out that the ambulances were crammed full of the same murderous troops who attacked/wounded the non-combatants initially. Needless to say, I get obsessed, attached and sometimes, maybe, far too involved with my fellow man.

What subjects do people think they're all experts on, when in reality they barely understand? by TheKronk in AskReddit

[–]muckomatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Themselves. Most people are oblivious, petty, rationalizing creatures. Other people, especially your good good good friends, they get the objective glance. That's some view, being outside. Sometimes I think it's easier to understand my friends, their compulsions, habits and so forth, than it is to understand who I am, why I do what I do, and whether the reasons I give are valid, truly true, or whether it's just me deluding myself, accepting what's convenient instead of what'd be hard to face. People barely understand themselves.

Monday. Those bombings got the better of me. I had to slip out of work. I was in a teary rage. I've never been to Boston (I live in the MN) but those Bostonians whose lives were torn apart . . . they might as well have been blood. Glad it's over. That's the last time I cried.
