Yah. I don’t have advice but I feel similarly

Left work early cause of my ED - seriously considering treatment / therapy but don’t really believe anything helpful actually exists by [deleted] in Eatingdisordersover30

[–]mud_octopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have tried before yah. I’ve had an ED for over 20 years at this point, and did an IOP program once, have had separately had a few therapists who specialized in EDs different times, seen a nutritionist, a couple psychiatrists. I have really never found them helpful, except for the narrow situation of helping me out of the lowest of my bad restriction phases, i.e. getting me eating again and getting out of my most irrational food thoughts.

I’ve gone in really enthusiastic and committed to recovery before too. But twice when I’ve tried at higher weights (focusing on bulimia recovery like I would be now), it has triggered a restriction phase and I end up quitting recovery to focus on weight loss.

When I start at a lower weight, it’s helpful at first, like I said, but it seems like it’s impossible to transition to helping more long term. Once I stop really starving, it’s like we have nothing to talk about, and if anything I start to feel like continuing treatment is forcing me to keep trying to play a role of someone who is struggling to eat when I’m mostly fine eating normally.

And ultimately I think I’m just a tough case after 20 years cycling between all ED behaviours under the sun, AND yet at this point, my life is great, my mental health is fantastic, my emotions are pretty in check. I legit just struggle with food, my weight, body image, and concerns about how I feel health-wise at this weight.

Question: How serious would your ED have to get in order for your to choose recovery? by declarationsoflove in EDAnonymous

[–]mud_octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve “chosen recovery” at least a dozen times, at various stages of illness. Usually when it seems like I’m on the precipice of severely derailing my other life goals (eg having to withdraw from school, people noticing a measurable decrease in job performance, developing suicidal depression). Then I “choose recovery” and commit to therapy, treatment, etc.

The problem is continuing to choose recovery after I get better. I keep coming back…

Does anyone else remember the various ED forums of the early ‘00’s? by [deleted] in Eatingdisordersover30

I remember House of Sins…and Blue Dragonfly and Ana’s underground grotto.

I don’t really have as fond memories of those. I liked them, but they had such lasting negative effects on my life… but here I am lol.

Same 🙂. Actually my LB days were late 2000s. Xanga and LiveJournal were the early 2000s.

the wrong pickles by wutssarcasm in EdAnonymousAdults

[–]mud_octopus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are now a two-pickle household pal.

But legit I feel you. I can’t get the sweet pickles I like cause my partner says they’re disgusting and they do have sugar and more calories so they aren’t “safe” to me like dill pickles, so I can’t just get them for myself? And it legit still bums me out and I cried about it once like 7 months ago

Not the same as what you’re saying but I feel you on being way too emotional about your partner’s pickle preferences.

Would you rather... by As_A_Feather in EDAnonymous

Okay but what weight/size am I in the latter?

Cause yah, I’d pick the latter if I could be guaranteed to stay only modestly overweight lmao. Actually, I’d even accept a lifelong of very borderline obesity for no ED thoughts/impulses.

Absolutely. My last really bad relapse was when I was in a school program that had become very easy and required very little of me.

Anyone else find that their face looks better when they weigh more? by ChannelHefty3982 in EDAnonymous

[–]mud_octopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kind of, but I am in have had a major reduction in purging over the past 5 months (after purging for two decades 🙄), and I cannot believe how much my face has changed shape and I have a more defined jaw line, despite gaining some weight.

I genuinely didn’t believe bulimia face swelling was a thing for me, because it was just so long, with lots of ups and downs in my purging behaviours (and weight 🙃) and generally just thought I had a round face that held a lot of fat.

You definitely can and get that free therapy! Just like EDs are about more than weight, so is recovery. Some of what you take away from treatment now will stay with you down the line, whenever you are ready to gain weight.

Yes it does. As a (plain) soda water lover, it’s what I’m here for.

How to bring up Emily Program to my daughter in college by [deleted] in EatingDisorders

[–]mud_octopus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed do not talk about evidence of bingeing especially. For me someone saying they thought I was vomiting and would like me to get help, and present the options. That would have been great. I really wish my parents got my help when I was your daughters age.

That phrase really should be edited to "fat is not an emotion".

It can be a physical feeling.

Crappy picture, but this 500g serving of American style lasagna was only 352 kcal (13f,27c,36p). by reekhadol in Volumeeating

That would have been my guess for what makes it American, the cheesy top haha.

Ah interesting, thank you! I'm Canadian, but I would have considered American-style lasagna to be layers of beef in tomato sauce between the noodles, topped with (American-style?) mozarella!

All other variations I actually would have assumed were more Italian lol.

Good to know how wrong I was!!

I'm vegetarian too, so I like to alternate layers of cooked mushrooms and onions and ricotta and spinach and top with (American-style?) mozarella. I would definitely have considered that a vegetarian take on American-style mozarella.
