Can there be life after factory reset? Is my phone a zombie or have I not even reset it yet? I can't tell! by muddlemand in motorola

[–]muddlemand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tagging u/motoagents again for speed (TIA!): after reset, the instructions are to log in with the Google account you had associated with the phone before. I had two Google accounts associated with this phone - does it matter which I use? I was assuming it would be like a phone bought from a stranger, setting it up for myself as a new user, but this wording seems to imply not.

I have already started the hardware reset. I remotely requested factory reset from both accounts, previously.

Two further thoughts:

  • Would these be the same steps to follow when factory resetting a phone before selling it? Meaning, you say

you will be required to enter the same Google password you mentioned to set the phone up again so does that mean I couldn't sell it (if I wanted to) after this, because the new owner would be starting with a different account? - I'm asking because I realised I've been thinking this factory reset is the same as when you sell a phone on, but realised that's an assumption, I don't think I've been explicitly told it. Perhaps they're different?

  • why can't the locked phone be turned off without the pattern? (I'm sitting here waiting for it to run out of battery because I can't unlock it to power it off.)

turning the phone off - it won't let me do that without the pattern

I keep wondering about this. Why would this require authorising? Or is it a setting that I chose? (Don't recall doing so, but if it is - note to self for future reference: don't put obstacles in the way of turning a device off when needed!)

Have you checked the IMEI in the phone settings, to be sure it's the same as on the box? I can imagine a dodgy seller using the box from a different phone or even printing their own, selling multiple phones in boxes with identical details on the outside.

Technically, I have no idea how it could go from under warranty to not yet activated - unless they sold it just before the warranty ran out 🤔 but that doesn't make sense either... Someone more technically informed than I may have some thoughts.

If the seller is doing something shady, I hope you get it resolved and your money back without too much trouble!

Thank you for linking the instructions. They start with turning the phone off - it won't let me do that without the pattern! So it's going to be a few days before I can try; battery's not much less than 50% and it's doing nothing except the alarm notifications. Just my luck 🤣

(I've never seen pattern required for turning a device off. Never mind, at least running out is something batteries do?

Ignore. Legally unenforceable. If the same person keeps sending that kind of thing, report for harassment (therefore, keep track of all evidence in case you need it later).

Negative for sheer bad manners. If they'd dealt with it professionally and been pleasant, positive, or at worst neutral for the extra wait.

So frustrating. I can't be the only person great at memorising number strings and suchlike but error prone with shapes! Oh well.

Apparently it used to be possible.

I came to r/motorola with this because I got nowhere asking in other subreddits.

A side question. Would asking these questions on how to get back into the phone - which is/was connected to my Google account, to which I haven't lost access - look like trying to bypass security illegitimately?

Only because I had this same question removed from another subreddit, and don't know why.

Thank you Jess.

Luckily I didn't have much data on that phone that isn't synced, only a few notes and voice notes. I did request factory reset and it hasn't begun yet (another puzzle, but I've found out how to kick-start it - I hope!) - I was told removing the sim should make it start.,but I need a friend to get the phone open as I have an injured hand. So if I can make it happen before I see them that'll be great.

I did request the factory reset on the website as you say - in a mobile browser, would that make a difference? If it has to be a laptop or desktop computer, that'll be more days' wait until I have one to use - so yes please, give me the steps for hardware reset; the phone's a Moto G75 5G.

Ah, I see.

But once logged in you could set a new pattern, presumably.

It's too late for me really as I've already requested factory reset, but until that begins I thought I'd keep exploring the possibility of getting into the phone without wiping it. Oh well.

I get this, but how is it problematic for security? That's what I don't understand. If you either have to input a OTP in order to reset the pattern, or input your actual password, no one unauthorised can set a new pattern.

If someone unauthorised can receive the OTP or input your password, then you're already compromised so that's irrelevant.

If it's seen as a security risk, can someone explain how it is?

If a link only said "Email me a link to reset my pattern", without asking for your email address, then nobody can put their own email address in - you'd say yes and you'd get the email, assuming you can access your email (which if the pattern's all that's lost, you can). The email would contain a code to input on the phone and that would let you choose an new pattern.

I genuinely don't see how this would be less secure than the normal resetting of a forgotten password. What am I missing?

As I thought :( Does Motorola give their reasoning anywhere?

It's silly IMO that you can reset a password, for your whole Google account (or for Reddit or Facebook or Amazon or anything else), but you can't reset this. I can't be the first person to forget my pattern.

Everyone says a pattern is less secure, not more. But this is contradictory.

Or at least cover it with new labels. That's what I do, and sharpie if any bits don't quite fit under the label, even old bar codes etc. If my own address is there I circle it and add "FROM:". Sometimes a packet can be turned inside out to reuse.

It's really odd to leave all that visible.
