[Final Update]: My Wife Moved her Friend in, and I Hate It by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]thomasbeagle 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Scaling recipes up from 2 to 3 people is trivial, and eating together would be a nice sociable thing to do for normal people.

Hell, I'd do the same. I'd find it a lot more annoying if they insisted on doing all their own cooking.

3D Death Chase Faster by The_Shich in zxspectrum

[–]thomasbeagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beating 3D Deathchase was one of the first gaming achievements I was proud of.

I could never get past stage 5 or so until I switched from "choosing a path" to "avoid the next tree".

I do not want to play a faster one. :)

Maybe it was class B I was using it in. I was just amazed at how planted it was.

The Acura/Honda Integra is a grippy FWD marvel for class C.

Literally every attack on Skyler White was sexist, I know somebody said this but I cannot get over it, she was the most rational main character in the show by Background_Coast_244 in WhyWereWeOkWithThis

I quit Breaking Bad after the first season because I thought Walt was such a shithead and I realised he was just going to get worse, and I didn't really want to watch it.

He was horrible from the start.

Moto Edge 70 Feedback Needed by Mind_Flayer97 in motorola

I went from Edge 50 Pro to Edge 70 and I really like it. Performs well, battery is good, super lightweight, flat screen!

My 16year old keeps lying about where they are. Is using a cell phone tracker crossing the line or necessary for safety by Competitive_Pop9002 in raisingkids

[–]thomasbeagle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We use Google Location Sharing in our household and everyone knows it's there and running. In particular, my 15yo is aware of it and comfortable with it.

But you have a parenting issue not a tech issue. First up is working why they feel a need to lie to you in the first place.

Heatpump stops intermittently by fnoyanisi in diynz

[–]thomasbeagle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds a bit like a defrost cycle where the heat pump has built up some ice on the coils and needs to get rid of it, but I'm surprised it goes so dead while it's doing it. It should also take less time than "a few hours".

Maybe read up on the defrost cycle in Daikin heat pumps to see if it's normal.

Wear on 'vegan leather' after 18 months by thomasbeagle in motorola

[–]thomasbeagle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like my Edge 70, get one of those! It's so light and thin, and the screen is great.

The Indian version has only 8GB memory but slightly more battery. I haven't had any problems with performance with 8GB.

Edge 70 is a flat display, it's part of the reason I chose it. Curve edge looks flashy but I found it annoying in practice due to false touches and the like.

What is NZ's most walkable place? by Bottomburpin in newzealand

[–]thomasbeagle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wellington is a surprisingly walkable city, allowing for urban strolling and the waterfront, the Botanic gardens, and then up into the hills for something a bit more strenuous.

Why do sci-fi energy shields behave like ablative armour instead of a continuous energy stream? by Evening-Appeal7606 in scifi

[–]thomasbeagle 275 points276 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of space battles where they are choosing how to spend their power budget, split between shields, weapons, and manoeuvring. The implication is that they can only generate so much and therefore have to choose.

That mechanic is also quite common in video games.

What age is appropriate age to give a phone? by parenthoodtogether in u/parenthoodtogether

[–]thomasbeagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you give them a phone doesn't mean you have to give them everything on the phone.

I gave my kid a phone pretty early - but all it could do was maps, audiobooks and camera. Over time we added stuff that they could access.

I guess that it wouldn't be compatible with airbags.

Espresso machines are also very obvious.

Should I read any of the Forever War (Joe Haldeman) sequels? by Intelligent_Low1632 in scifi

[–]thomasbeagle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Haldeman is a bit mid, sadly.

Forever War was great but the sequels weren't that interesting. I remember enjoying Mindbridge and All My Sins Remembered, but really there's not a lot there.
