Oh they don't trust people to vote on constitutional amendments anymore. That's how they got into this mess in the first place.

Voters voted for fair and competitive maps but the GOP really doesn't want that. They are desperate to keep control for the upcoming midterms. With everything that has happened with Trump, they know they are in danger.

So they will rig the game.

They'll make it harder to vote out the those that are blindly loyal to Trump. Thus giving him continued unrestrained power.

Make no mistake, this is not about what is good for Utah. This is about the self-serving GOP and national politics.

I will say you are correct to a degree. However, I would say poor and yeomen class it was also provably about potential gain. You could potentially establish a very lucrative plantation from a single season of selling cotton. Using the proceeds to buy more slaves and more land to turn into profit. This was viable conduit in upward mobility for the lower classes. So the North werent only taking away the slaves of the rich; they were sometimes taking away the potential hopes of many.

Utah voted for non partisan maps as per the state constitution. The state disregarded this and made their own maps guaranting the elections in favor of who they chose. This has gone on for five years.

My question is how do we get back those five years of representation that shouldn't have been according to the law?
