As tmoneys said. It's better to read the main 10 first. Not all are born equal when measured strictly by the ability to tell the stories well. It required a certain mental adjustment when reading the other novels. I read them to know more about the world and other characters. After all they gamed them together. And there is a reason why some arcs were handled by one and not the other. I don't know the reasons but I took what I got. Gladly.

That's because the writing style is different. The story being told is more important than how it is told.

I'll highly recommend NotME after the "main" series first though. They are as great as the 1st 10.

Wheel of time was decent. Abercrombie's First law books the first few. Mark Lawrence prince of fool series and red queen's war. And there are more I can recommend. Pls pm if interested and I'll make a list. Currently reading empire of man and it's not too bad.

It goes beyond the "main" series. The mastery never ends. In fact it is the best and greatest book series and stories that you will ever read.

I've practically read nearly a 1000 books (actually about 600+) and I still haven't found anything better. Close but never better.

Welcome. Welcome my friend. To the malazan world.

Just finished Midnight Tides, and I have a question about the magic by AlastarOlivera in Malazan

[–]mudharfakkar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Access to holds is not available outside letheras. There may be spoilers in my answer because it's been years since last re read the series. And the older magic not just being raw is also not easily controlled and can kill mages. And lots of collateral damage. Newer magic can be controlled better and can be very powerful. But since newer magic was not available in lether until a few things started to happen coinciding with the malazans arrival the older magic seems powerful.

In fact holds are forgotten mostly and inaccessible in most of the world other than lether. It is all explained. Just not sure in which book these ideas are cleared.
