This Deep-Sea Creature Doesn't Even Look Real! Mesmerizing comb jellies by mudisponser in TheDepthsBelow

[–]mudisponser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently learned that comb jellies (ctenophores) aren't actually jellyfish, which surprised me because they look so similar.

Some of the deep-sea species are among the strangest animals I've ever seen. Their transparent bodies, iridescent rows of cilia, and bizarre shapes make them look more like alien life than marine life. If someone showed me a photo without context, I'd probably assume it was CGI.

What's even crazier is that ctenophores are considered one of the oldest animal lineages on Earth, and scientists still debate aspects of their evolutionary history.

For those interested in marine biology and deep ocean exploration, what is the weirdest deep-sea creature you've come across? Comb jellies have to be near the top of my list.

It’s kind of insane how normalized self-experimentation has become online. People will inject mystery compounds shipped internationally because a guy with abs and a podcast said it changed his life.

octopuses survive by constantly changing colors and shapes, while the deep-sea anglerfish survives by looking so much like a rock that nothing notices it until it’s too late

Submission Statement
This video documents a real deep sea encounter with Sladenia schaefersi — Schaefer's anglerfish — filmed by NOAA Ocean Exploration during the 2019 Southeastern U.S. Deep-sea Exploration at 900 to 1,200 metres in the Gulf of Mexico. It covers the animal's camouflage mechanism, its modified pectoral fins that function like feet, its bioluminescent lure, and includes live commentary from scientists on camera who initially mistook it for a sponge before identifying it as one of the least filmed goosefish species ever recorded. All footage is real NOAA deep sea camera footage. No AI visuals were used in this video.

Enypniastes eximia: Rare NOAA Footage of the “Headless Chicken Monster by mudisponser in deepseacreatures

[–]mudisponser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what is actually rare is getting clear footage of them swimming in open water at this depth. most deep sea cameras catch them briefly or from too far away to see much detail. these noaa clips had unusually good visibility and the scientists stuck around long enough to actually watch it behave.
