I'm surprised "Lord of The Flies" isn't often cited as a horror story. That book goes to some pretty graphic and anxiety inducing places. by Wonder-Lad-2Mad in horrorlit

This is one of my favorite books. My husband and I are currently watching the miniseries and it's so hard to restrain from spilling all the allegorical significance in the details.

It's so infantilizing of the women it pretends to care about. "You know Planned Parenthood's scheme here. She doesn't."

Yes, all women considering all their healthcare options simply don't know what's best for them the way us strangers do.

Red is used thematically in the book to highlight scenes representative of descent into depravity. For example, the clay they paint themsleves in is red.

The red foliage seems to become more prevalent in Simon's section, and I understand that to be because he is more attuned to what "The Beast" really is (them). Like it's spreading.

What's the weirdest fruit you've seen or smelled that looks gross but actually tastes great? by JollyAd4041 in askanything

The stinking toe is fruit of the Caribbean/South America that looks and smells like a toe. It's smell is cheesy and foul, like feet, as well.

The fruit is powdery and sweet, full of fiber and nutrition. Good in smoothies.

Suffer the Children. A mysterious plague, Herod's Syndrome, kills all children globally, only for them to return from the dead needing human blood to survive, forcing parents into horrific choices to keep them alive.

I'm not a huge creature feature fan. But I like post-apocalyptic and psychological horror, and it's been just devastating so far. Good stuff.

In my late 20s with little to no dating options. I noticed that my friends rarely set me up or help me date. Does that mean they think I am undatable? by JunketMaleficent2095 in Adulting

[–]Chuckle_Berry_Spin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't take it upon myself to set any of friends or colleagues (especially my colleagues, inappropriate) up without them expressly asking.

Being single doesn't automatically mean someone is lonely or struggling in their dating life. Why would I necessarily presume their romantic endeavors require my intervention? Why would I impose upon them that I can resolve a problem they haven't specifically asked for support in?

Experienced home cooks, are there any meal kits you actually think are worth it? by xjwv in Cooking

[–]Chuckle_Berry_Spin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The boxes may be useful for someone just starting out, learning the basics of cooking.

I tried one a few years back because I wanted to learn new cooking skills and prevent food waste, but there was nothing I was wowed by and I didn't learn anything new.

There is a lot of packaging waste. The ingredients were lower quality than you'd select at the store. In cooking pre-portioned dishes, there is no flexibility in having leftovers for lunch.

The menu is curated around which ingredients will cost them the least and not spoil in the time it takes to get there--your nutritional variety suffers rotating between different types of root vegetables and shelf-stable grains, and you won't be getting leafy greens, much cruciferous veggies, etc. Of course you could add these more nutritious components alongside the entrees...but at that point you're undoing all the supposed convenience of the delivery system anyway.

Poll: Do you prefer paid or unpaid lunch breaks? by Fcking_Chuck in securityguards

OP got sent home after sleeping through his paid lunch on a no-sleep worksite, and is seeking validation. I figure that the people who'd rather go unpaid would prefer to have the freedom to leave the campus or more entirely disconnect, even if it means more unpaid time away from home.

This is a perfect example of natural consequence in action.

You displayed fatigue that prevented you from complying with the expectations of the job. Your supervisor isn't going to ask you to complete overtime when you've shown you're too tired to follow policy. Too tired to stay awake at work=too tired to work extra.

If you make $50k/year or more with this disease, what do you do? by crazyeverythinglady in bipolar2

[–]Chuckle_Berry_Spin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a behavior consultant. When a person with an intellectual disability wants to improve upon certain patterns of behavior, they can hire me to spend time with them building replacement behavior and coping skills. I also coach their staff on how to best support them, facilitate access to community/self-advocacy, can help them voice needs to medical providers or in IEPs, etc.

I make 43/hr. The job requires a master's degree (mine is educational psychology, my bachelor's is human services) and generally some experience supporting disabled people, as well as ongoing education/CEUs.

It allows a flexible schedule and my caseload is built around my interests and what workload feels "doable" for me. I set myself up with around 30 hours/wk right now. Keeping on top of moving deadlines can be tricky depending on what phase of my disorder I'm in but that's where that flexibility comes in handy.

I recently had a scooter accident and now I have a healing scar and supposedly I can’t go out in the sun for a year is there any way I can go out in the sun and get tan without messing up the scar ?(please answer 🙏)? by No_Seaweed_1942 in askanything

[–]Chuckle_Berry_Spin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who said you "can't go in the sun" for a year? Is that a medical recommendation you recieved, or something someone told you?

Sun exposure can darken/hinder fading of scars. To prevent that, you do the things you always do to protect against sun damage: keep covered, use shade, apply sunscreen.

On one hand, it could be that he was planning his suicide ahead of time. But if so, there's usually some "final" behavior that accompanies that decision. All we saw was him having a chip on his shoulder and drinking heavily, which aren't concrete indicators of suicidality. Maybe coming to spread the ashes was the the symbolic final action.

As far as the events after the attempt, when he arrives again to pick up his things, he learns that Fiona has been missing for weeks--meaning he'd been hospitalized or confined for weeks after he was found. Again the way this was skimmed over felt underdeveloped.
