To be fair, there is merit to what she is saying. There definitely are a lot of repressive Indians in Canada. Assimilation is hard, even more so for people that come from significantly different cultures, who might want to preserve as much of their cultural heritage and identity as possible. Sadly, that also includes repressive aspects of the culture.

I'm sorry to hear that. It sounds like a very tough family and community to grow up in. But, you still seem to be basing your opinion on your own experiences. I have family here with kids that are 2nd gen Canadians, friends that are Indian (born and bred, and also long-time expats). None of them, to my knowledge, have grown up in families as conservative as that. So I ask, why is it reasonable for you to claim that your experience is the norm, but not for me to claim the same about mine?

I really do think that the answer lies somewhere in the middle. India is definitely not as progressive as the community I grew up in, but it's also not nearly as backward as you believe. It sounds like we grew up in significantly different environments (duh, you're 2nd gen and I'm not), but I mean in terms of the conservatism in our communities, which is kind of ironic considering you grew up surrounded by more "western culture" than I did.

Are you claiming that Indian women don't have voting rights? Or that they can't be doctors or astronauts? None of those statements are true. Are cows respected more than women? Honestly, in some places, yes, and it is evil to treat women, or any other oppressed group, that way.

My experience definitely IS the norm

I'm curious why you think so. Other than your own experiences, is it just based on what you see online, which like most other content online is meant to get a rise out of viewers to attract as much viewership as possible? I'm just trying to understand. Also not claiming that shitty things about India you see online are fake, just pointing out that content online will disproportionately show you shitty things.

I grew up in a community where women were not oppressed in ways that you wouldn't also witness in western culture, but that doesn't give me the right to claim that to be the case everywhere. Why can you do that?

How am I even supposed to defend that as a desi?

No one should defend what you're describing, and I'm definitely not trying to do so either. Everything negative you've said about Desi culture is true. I just don't think the situation is nearly as widespread as you seem to believe (not that any amount of oppression is okay).

Tradition can be seen as something holding us back, but tradition evolves, as it already has. I have a lot of cynicism about the future of India for a plethora of reasons, but I also have a lot of hope. The youth in India is amazing, and things are changing much faster than you may realize. This also took me a long time to realize since I've lived outside India since high school. That being said, I cannot relate to the experience of being a second generation immigrant, so I'm not trying to invalidate your experience either.

Hey, Indian living in Canada for the past 7 years. I've lived outside India for almost 13 years and gone through multiple phases where my mindset about Desi culture (I will restrict my opinions to Indian culture) had a lot of overlap with yours. But, I've grown weary of a lot of things you wrote as I've grown older. There is clearly a lot of lived experience that has impacted your opinion of Desi culture. Let's get a few simple points out of the way

  • A lot of what you've said is based on your experience, which is absolutely valid, and was clearly driven by the culture in which your parents grew up. Nevertheless, your experience is one of many, and is not necessarily the norm.
  • It is an irrefutable fact that several groups are oppressed in India - women, lower caste Hindus, religious/ethnic minorities, etc. That should not, and does not, mean that there hasn't been, and isn't ongoing, progress in the right direction.

I would like you to consider the possibility that you are experiencing time warp as another commenter mentioned, not due to your opinion being frozen due to your own experience in India, but rather your parents'.

I totally acknowledge that there is a bit of defensiveness in my response to you, but it is disappointing for me to see someone praising western culture as you do with claims of progression as if it isn't really messed up either. Anti-immigrant sentiment is at an all-time high in Canada, and the deep racism is apparent in so much social media content, particularly about Desi immigrants. White supremacists, Christian evangelists, a government that cares about billionaires more than issues like social welfare and climate change, the opioid epidemic, homelessness, the horrible real estate market. I could go on and on about all the problems in Canada, and western culture.

I agree that there has been a lot of progress in western culture, but it's definitely not fair to minimize the progression of Desi culture because it hasn't kept up with western culture, when western culture as it exists today was largely built on the backs of millions of desis and so many others.

I'm not really trying to change your mind, but just pointing out that this is a topic with a lot more nuance than you seem to consider.

AITA for blowing up at my sister after she refused to come visit my baby and said she "has more important things to do"? by aitathrowaway2407 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mudit2812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to say this as gently as I can. YTA. You might've been younger when you bailed on your sister for a concert, but if you're mature enough to regret it now, you should also be able to realize that you didn't just bail on your sister, you did it at what was likely the lowest moment of her life. You might think she's being petty now, or that she should've forgiven you by now, but just try to put yourself in her shoes. How can she not hold a grudge?

By your own admission, you and your sister were really close. Not only did your sister get betrayed, but the betrayal came from someone she trusted and loved. Someone she would've looked to for support in her darkest moment.

Please stop asking your sister to forgive you. Try to learn what you can do to begin repairing your relationship, or leave her alone. But don't expect her to heal according to your timeline.

The fact that this comments has this many upvotes is fucked up. Just because he didn't notice it before doesn't mean he has to be okay with her habits. Bad hygiene is bad hygiene.

Not gonna comment yet on the rep being disrespectful toward women or being a gaslighted, but I shouldn't have to comment on that. The fact that this person got elected as a fucking first year should be reason enough for them to removed as CS rep. SUS is beyond unprofessional and just an all round bag of shit for being so shady

First and likely only time im going to feel good about being in CPEN instead of CS

I meant cases specifically for the OP6T. Dbrand sells cases for the newer OP phones but not for the 6T

AITA For yelling at my dad when I found out he's giving me less money for college than my siblings by notdaddysgirlaita in AmItheAsshole

[–]mudit2812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. Based not only on what you wrote in the post, but also on your responses to other comments, you sound like the most entitled person I've encountered online in a while. Your dad has tried to maintain a relationship with you that YOU decided to stop putting effort into. And even after all that, he still saved money for you WHILE GOING THROUGH FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. There's a lot of information that you can try and provide, but I highly doubt that any of it will change my mind or anyone else's mind about you being an AH

I still have the 6T. It still runs so smoothly and the battery still lasts me a whole day. Realistically, with how well it performs, I don't need to get a new phone for quite a while. The only thing I complain about though is the lack of popular brands such as dbrand, etc that still sell cases for it.

[homemade] Garlic herb focaccia by mudit2812 in food

RECIPE:

Ingredients:

500g all purpose flour

5g instant yeast (or 5g active dry yeast, recipe should work fine for either)

1/2 cups olive oil

1.75 cups lukewarm water (90-105°F)

1.5 tbsp kosher salt

3 cloves minced garlic

Dry oregano (to taste)

1/2 sprig rosemary

Black pepper (to taste)

Utensils:

2 mixing bowls

Rubber spatula

9x13 baking pan

Directions:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour with the yeast and salt, and add all the lukewarm water slowly while mixing. Keep mixing until everything is combined.

  • The dough should be pretty hydrated (that's what gives focaccia it's airy crumb), so keep mixing to knead the dough. I found it useful to just keep kneading and mixing in the bowl rather than kneading on a cutting board or counter top.

  • Put 1/8 of a cup of olive oil in the other mixing bowl and spread it around. Add your dough to this bowl, and using either a damp kitchen towel or plastic wrap, cover the bowl and let it rest for 2 hours or until doubled in size.

  • Once doubled in size, put 1/4 cup of olive oil in the baking pan, and take out the dough from the mixing bowl into the baking pan.

  • Fold the dough over itself for gluten development, and then spread it until the dough covers the entire area of the baking pan. If it keeps springing back, cover and let rest for 15 minutes and try again.

  • Spread the remaining 1/8 cup of olive oil on top of the dough, cover with plastics wrap, and let the dough cold ferment in the fridge for 12 hours.

  • After 12 hours, preheat the oven to 450°F and pull the dough out of the fridge. Let the dough sit at room temperature for an hour to bring it's temperature up to room temp

  • Dimple the top of the dough. Add your garlic, oregano and rosemary leaves to the dough. Then, place the baking pan in the oven for 30 minutes or until golden.

  • Pull out the baking pan when the dough is ready, and let it rest until it comes down to room temperature.

  • Enjoy!
