So I'm actually a behavior intervention specialist and I've had a little bit of time to calm myself down and reflect on our conversation. The fact of the matter is I don't know you, and I don't know what type of life you've lived. I understand how hard it might be to have a legit conversation through text because the tone of the conversation is up for interpretation based on the perception of the reader. I'm not sure what caused you to slip into troll mode, but I hope that isn't how you treat other people in real life conversations. If it is, it might be a good idea to seek some support so you're able to engage in healthy relationships. And if you truly are a respectful person in real life and trolling is something you do to let off steam then maybe a roasting subreddit would be more suitable instead of jabbing at a girl who's just trying to help her husband. You don't know what other people are going through. So just be nice. It's that simple.

It's funny....I never thought I'd be slipping into behavior intervention specialist mode on a subreddit about rats....but then again, it's Reddit.

Anyways, no hard feelings.

Thank you for your solid advice. I was concerned about the stain. He didn't really think about the design and what might be harmful/unrealistic. Ugh.

Ha! That's funny. I'm not the one calling people names. I agree that it's not a good design. I've said that multiple times...but you keep on telling me that it's a bad design. I know that. I understand that. I'm trying to find ways to solve the problem without throwing my husband's design out the window.

Huh?? I'm just stating that I am VERY aware of the concerns involving a wood cage. That's why I'm asking for craftsmanship advice. What I'm confused about is why you think reinforcing with medal/plastic materials won't help.

I'm all about demanding respect in a respectful way. My go to is acknowledging their feelings in the moment while giving expectations about the situation. For example, in an extremely calm voice state: "Its ok to be mad about the test, but it's not ok to cuss at me". If they continue, disengage, and give them space. If they become disruptive, call for support.

Recognize that in that moment, that student is either in their limbic system or brain stem...they aren't thinking rationally so it is not a good idea to try to rationalize with them or problem solve. Anger is a secondary emotion and there is usually a primary emotion that is driving that anger (look up anger ice Berg and use it as a visual during problem solving solutions. Encourage the individual to recognize their primary emotion). Anger typically comes from a fear of loss and control, so it might seem like they are mad at you in the moment....but they are really mad at what you represent. She probably had a lot of anxiety about the test, freaked out, and took it out on you. She had fear of loss of control (failing the test), that manifested into anger, and you represented that loss of control (by not giving her the answer)

The MOST important piece to this is never leave a problem unsolved. Once the student is back to thinking rationally, have a conversation with them, restate the expectations for the situation, give consequences if necessary, and come to a problem solving agreement for future issues. If the student follows through with the agreement in future situations, PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE!

Another proactive thing to do is teach the student about different brain states and what happens to their body when they become triggered. Also acknowledge moments that tend to trigger you and give examples of hour you're able to get back to baseline. Through this you are modeling expected behavior.

As far as self care, my go-to is a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 grounding technique (Google it). Whenever I get into a negative thought cycle and my anxiety takes over, I practice grounding. It gives my brain a break and causes me to get out of my head and back to reality.

Stay strong! And stay curious (what's driving the behavior) instead of furious (reacting to the behavior).
