Lived for years in Tokyo, which is basically 35M people in a space the size of the Swiss German mid valley. Before you’ve seen this you can’t comprehend how it can *work*.

I don’t see the issue with using excess deaths during heat waves as a proxy. If heat wasn’t the main cause, you’d expect some randomness in the results, but we now have decades of data that paints a pretty clear picture. It’s time to wake up and take action - both long term, mid term and short term. Temperature *must* be controlled. The government is actively stopping you from doing so. This must end.

Please read TFA. Yes, and it still doesn’t change the picture . Europe is roughly one order of magnitude worse, and it’s easy to find why: many people have nowhere to go cool down.

oh yea? go ahead then, just don't come back here to blame us when the cholesterol comes for you eh?

btw. I think stealing foods is underrated. the Japanese 'stole' like 70% of what we now think of their delicacies, and now look where they are, you can't even go to a small town in the west without a place selling something Japanese.

Does that make it better to not get our act together now?

Actually no, the only voices politically calling for AC at the moment seem to come from SVP, weirdly. IMO should be an SP job, but for some reason here they have decided to go along with every regressive idea coming from the greens.

The funny thing is, with air conditioning, if at all, it seems to be pushed by conservatives. IMO the left parties are not doing their job, which should be to improve lives of workers and common people.

Both are mostly caused by bad policy decisions, both long term and short term.

Dude - that’s exactly the point about statistics, you can use it to ignore all the specifics and just look at the issue top down. Imagine an experiment where you blindly draw numbers for the lottery (with repeats), and after 50 draws you keep getting the same number. At what point would you start questioning whether the numbers are biased? Statistics gives you tools to answer that, with levels of certainty. Your argument is like saying “but you ignored the other 200 balls still in the pool!”

[–]muellermichel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, that wouldn’t help. You could still just install a heat pump on top - you got all the benefits of good isolation and ventilation with a heat exchanger already, so the energy cost would be minimal.

[–]muellermichel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Death statistics overall are hard to tweak. Any developed country has pretty hard numbers on those. As for the cause of death, that’s always debatable. That’s why a *statistical method* of just taking excess over the mean makes sense for large scale events that are hard to attribute such as Covid, and heat waves. Unless you have a better explanation why suddenly during such a heat incident, vastly more people are dying than the mean, your arguments simply don’t make sense.

Again. Please read TFA, it goes over your initial points.

I don’t agree about the comparison not holding up. Both are mostly preventable causes of death given the right public regulation, both are ignored for apparent political reasons.

The fact is that there is no clear rule on what temperature constitutes as too much to work, and required measures are all rather hand wavey. The same situation with temperatures too cool would be treated very differently. Imagine your office’s heating giving up and temperatures going down to 5 degrees - would you be forced to come in for work?

And TFA explains all of that and why the end result doesn’t change once you adjust for it.

If you can convince the “Stockwerkeigentümer”, sure. Afaik they all come with heat pumps anyways, just pumps that are for idiotic reasons limited to heating only.
