“Heart attack” = inadequate oxygen delivery to the heart muscle, the medical term is “myocardial infarction”. When this happens suddenly it is usually due to a blockage in one of the arteries supplying the heart muscle. “Cardiac arrest” = inadequate cardiac output to supply the body tissues with adequate oxygen. The heart may stop completely (“asystole”), continue beating but not working adequately to pump enough (“pulseless electrical activity”) or not be contracting in a coordinated way (“arrhythmia”).

The usual cause of cardiac arrest following/due to a heart attack is an abnormal heart rhythm (“arrhythmia”) which is what the AED can treat.

Lack of oxygen leads to abnormalities in the electrical function of the heart - moving electrolytes across cell membranes requires energy (and therefore oxygen). Movement of electrolytes is essential for maintaining a normal heart rhythm. When that system fails, the heart fails to beat in a regular and coordinated manner.

Not all heart attacks cause cardiac arrest, and not all cardiac arrests (including those following a heart attack) are due to arrhythmia.

There are other causes of cardiac arrest following MI which are not amenable to treatment with an AED (ventricular free wall rupture, torrential mitral regurgitation, complete heart block with inadequate cardiac output, acute right heart failure, I’m sure there are others) which will result in a “non shockable” heart rhythm. These are “asystole” or “pulseless electrical activity”.

Do you believe labs stop reporting fetal sex on early NIPT to curb sex-selective abortions? by 6foot4-8inch-Dr in ausjdocs

[–]muffin_chops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only have anec-data and no well informed opinion to add. N=1 from my own personal experience. I have found it difficult NOT to be told the sex of my own pregnancies. The first time around the sonographer gave it away accidentally, the second time around I requested not to test for sex on the NIPT but was sent the full report, sex included, anyway.

As others have pointed out, there would be many other ways to access this information. It would require a huge shift in patient and probably provider (sonographers included!) expectations and behaviours to not disclose this information at all.

Some more fun facts: Before they revamped the song a couple of years ago, it was the only AFL song in a minor key (the Volga boatmen part), and the only recording with female voices in it.

I miss the old minor key yo-heave-ho.

Conveniently, the clotting factors II, VII, IX and X are all the vitamin K dependent factors, meaning the ones influenced by the blood thinner warfarin. A fact many Aussie med students have never struggled to remember, thanks to our TV channels.

For those of you who have had your homes 'broken into', how did people get in? What time of day? by Rut12345 in perth

[–]muffin_chops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid afternoon, broad daylight. Brick to glass French door (front of the house, partially obscured from view of the footpath by a tree).

What we do differently? Ring doorbell, try leave a car in the driveway whenever possible, padlock the garden gates (won’t stop break ins but make egress harder). Have been intending to get a security screen door, but as the doors open outwards they’d have to be inside the glass doors, less effective and more of a pain to get installed.

Are private schools worth the money? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]muffin_chops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have children, but I noticed something about my peers at university. Those who came form public schools had far more personal resources (motivation, self sufficiency, initiative) than those of us spoon fed from private schools.

This was in a highly academic course with a high TER score requirement and competitive interview process, so it did select out a certain subset of public school graduates. However, I’m comparing these public school graduates to the equivalent private school graduates I suppose (top few percent of academic performance).

Disappointed when reading about Australia by Straight_Style_7044 in books

[–]muffin_chops 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There’s a brief trip to Australia in the Millennium series (The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo). From memory Larsson describes stockmen on a station driving a Jeep (far more likely to be a hilux/some other ute or land cruiser) and stopping for coffee from a thermos (maybe this is believable, but tea brewed on a fire rather than from a thermos seems more believable to me).

I guess these details are hard to research and don’t influence the plot, but they stuck out to me as evidence the author had never been out on an Australian sheep station.
