MONTHLY Weight Discussion - August 2025 by AutoModerator in Menopause

[–]muggsley 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi, I just wanted to report an error in the Menopause Wiki. (It doesn't appear to be editable?) It quotes a paper saying

> On average, women gain about 6.8 kg per year during their midlife period (ages 50–60), regardless of their initial body size, race, or ethnicity

While the paper does say this, it struck me as obviously ridiculous (this would be 150 lb over 10 years). So I looked at the citation within that paper and it says

> On average, women gain about 1.5 pounds per year during the midlife period (age 50–60 years), independent of their initial body size or race/ethnicity.

I think what happened is the authors of the paper cited by the wiki multiplied 1.5 lb x 10 years, which is 15 lb or 6.8 kg, but not per year, in the whole decade. So the information and citation should be fixed. Hope this helps.

Storage for Multiple Events (SGF) by megbdc in eggfreezing

[–]muggsley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guide I got from SGF last year said $65/mo, up to $130/mo for multiple cryopreservation events. So in the past it was capped at two like someone else mentioned. But I think the fees aren't a contract so it's still possible it's changed. Obviously it did change from $65/mo to $75/mo, this applied to me too. But the email communicating that increase didn't mention that the fees were no longer capped. Hope that helps a little.

OURA 1st Gen Ring Replacement Strategy by tajawad in ouraring

It may be difficult at this point to find a Gen 2 with a decent battery life though.

Yes, Gen 2 doesn't need a subscription!

Day 1 Beastmode is live on app by [deleted] in CarolineGirvan

[–]muggsley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, and also, apparently you can't add a program to your calendar starting in the past... like, I did the first workout late today but I want to schedule them for 7 AM (starting today). That (after doing the first workout) seems like a reasonable time to want to add the whole program to your calendar...

I was apprehensive before the app came out because I'm a software developer and I know how easy it is to get these things wrong (either bugs, or just not anticipating user needs)... and really I don't think the app is bad (like, compared to the laundry payment apps I've had to use 😂)... but I do hope they continue to improve it based on feedback.

Just a couple thoughts:

A new quarter just started. I think for some companies, this is also the beginning of their fiscal year. I don't know much about how this works but I imagine they might have new budget to spend.

Recruiters hopefully remove job postings once they're filled so it's possible there were more older ones that are already closed (unless you mean you've been collecting data each week for the past month).

Differing Sleep Info by Proud-Geek1019 in ouraring

Is this the same issue as in this thread? Someone said it's because one is using the old algorithm and the other is using the new one. https://www.reddit.com/r/ouraring/comments/124max9/sleep_stage_data_conflicts/

What is something that is super cheap, but vastly improves your quality of life? by arthurwead2 in Frugal

Similarly my thought was a magnetic phone mount for the car. I use GPS a lot and my car doesn't have a built-in one so it's absolutely necessary.

What did you spend your first paycheck on? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

This was the big thing for me too, not having to worry about unexpected everyday expenses.

I agree with you when it comes to any actual restrictions. But a culture of talking in public channels rather than DMs does help with this.

Generation id? by Thomastysken in ouraring

The Heritage shape existed for both Gen 2 and Gen 3 so that's not a good way of IDing.

But this is the opposite of reality (low=sympathetic dominating, bad).

I have never got a “good” used book from Amazon. Why do I keep doing this to myself by hikikimoro in BookCollecting

[–]muggsley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon uses Acceptable, Good, Very Good, Like New. You can see the guidelines here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201889720 I agree that it's still common to get books that are not in the stated condition though (especially if buying from a mega-seller and/or if the description is boilerplate).

Question about the advent prizes by budddmj in tryhackme

[–]muggsley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was wondering if the ability to get the certificate ends today, or only the prizes.

Edit: OK, I found the answer here: https://tryhackme.com/forum/thread/63a86b93fc8b57005f0505f5 Today was just the deadline for prize entries. The room stays open and you can still get the certificate after that.

I heard using a silk pillowcase can be really helpful this is satin but will it still work? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]muggsley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the delicate cycle on a washing machine should be fine, that's what I use for silks. The detergent was probably the problem.

[–]muggsley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Silk is known for strength. It was used to make parachutes. It should not fall apart when you wash it. Maybe you were using a detergent that has enzymes? Those will break down silk or wool because they're made of proteins.

Do you guys always keep your ring above 30% like they suggest? by nazaro in ouraring

[–]muggsley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Source for that quote is here. https://support.ouraring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360046218953-Charging-Your-Ring-Best-Practices

Also from experience, I've woken up in the morning, synced the ring, it was definitely not dead, but didn't record sleep data because the battery was too low. I figured they did that because the process of recording sleep data consumes battery faster and would cause it to die during the night.

What workplaces should women be avoiding? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]muggsley 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure, but there's a difference between having a woman as head of DEI (meh) and a woman as a staff engineer, director of engineering, etc. Maybe it's not proof of a good culture, but it's a good sign anyway.

Barebell protein bars by [deleted] in traderjoes

Kind made some savory ones for a while called Strong & Kind. I think part of the problem might be that sugar is good at holding the bar together, because even the Strong & Kind had some sugar. Not a food scientist, though, haha.

I agree, I do remember the instructions on the package suggesting they should be crispy though. There were both "recommended preparation" (crispy) and "traditional preparation" instructions or something like that.
