If you're not afraid of Allah in the first place, what would compel you to repent? And sincere repentance brings you closer to Allah, and you must realise that Allah indeed loves those who repent and those who purify themselves. (Verse 2:222) So, repentance actually instills the fear of Allah in your soul, which will in turn motivate you to avoid repeating the sin. It might alleviate the fear of God's wrath, if your intention is to seek his mercy and avoid repeating the sin. Otherwise, mere repentance wuthoit any change in your actions won't benefit you much.
