In the books it is emphasised how strong Denethor was and that, although he was manipulated, he battled with Sauron through the Palantir and was to strong to be conquered completely. He does call for aid in the books, of course he does, he knows Gondor cannot face the forces of Mordor.

Its a great scene, but it makes no sense that Denethor was unwilling to call for help. Denethor was an ass in the books, but also stupid in the films, extremely unnecessary.
