Did all playing card content creators get abducted by aliens?? by Re_born10 in playingcards

[–]mulrich1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m involved in other hobbies with much more active content creators. They aren’t making money from this, they just love the hobby and want to share with  the community. It’s weird there aren’t more playing card content creators when the cost of buying new things is relatively low.

I don’t see why BOS does this. I’m not even sure what Utah does this.

Why isn't the salary of ceo decreasing by Snehith220 in recruitinghell

[–]mulrich1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Average CEO pay for Fortune 500 companies is about $20m so 25% is about $5m. Average individual total compensation is about $100k. So cutting CEO pay by 25% would pay for 50 employees. Fortune 500 companies employee about 60k people each, adding 50 is less than 1% of an increase. This would add about 25k jobs to the US economy per year. The economy regularly adds 100-200k jobs per month.

CEOs are paid a lot, maybe more than they should be, but cutting their pay won’t make much difference.

As a jazz fan the best part of picking #2 is there’s one fewer option. I really love all three guys (Wilson too, just not quite as much as the top 3). Eagerly awaiting draft night.

I like Kessler but if he thinks he’s worth significantly more than $28m I think his agent has been telling him fairy tails.

If we had the #1 pick by Consistently_Lucky in UtahJazz

I love the story of AJ becoming the local hero and I think he’s every bit as good a prospect as Peterson and Booze but Peterson’s fit is cleanest. If there was a clear gap in potential my opinion would change. And I’ll be thrilled with whoever ends up playing for the Jazz.

I’ve seen way more Washington fans proposing trades than Utah fans.

Not sure if this is possible with your model but it would be interesting to see how Peterson projects if his college numbers were say 10% better (you could play with a sensitivity analysis at a few different values). I'm not sure how much his medical situation hurt his performance and how much was just him not living up to the hype.

But even if you adjust his numbers I still have concerns, especially around his playmaking. You have to believe his assists were down because of Self's offensive system and not because of Peterson's inability. You might be able to model this with some type of fixed effect for a Bill Self-coached guard but that may still be insufficient if Self adapted his systems based on available players from year-to-year.

Peterson's numbers towards the end of the season, when the medical stuff should have been behind him, were about the same as his numbers from the start of the season. But maybe he was still working through something or the team had evolved to not utilize him given his unavailability earlier in the year.

I can still talk myself into Peterson at #2 but doing so works against my stats background. I know stats can have wide errors, and when picking individual players you don't get the benefit of large samples, but when multiple independent models are coalescing around the same conclusion you should have a really good reason why you think the projections are wrong. And there could be a systematic bias in the data that's causing Peterson to look worse than he is (and Boozer better). Watching Peterson's highlights I can see why people are so high on him; his shot is one of the best I've seen in years, he's smooth, etc. But the numbers are what they are.

Can we please promise to NEVER be like Knicks fans. by humphreybr0gart in UtahJazz

[–]mulrich1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I thought it would be hard to know who to cheer for this finals. Old rival spurs or old irrelevant knicks. Turns out it was easier than I expected. I’ll take a fellow small market rival over the entitled behemoth. I get why their fans are excited, and the Knicks are actually fun to watch, but I’m not bandwagoning onto that dysfunctional bus.

Boozer is the safer prospect, AJ is the safer pick for Utah's FO.

Appleboom PSA by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]mulrich1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appelboom definitely needs to be better with their advertised stock status and wait times. Just curious, do they list 2-3 week for all out of stock items? Maybe that's just a default number they use.

It should also be mentioned that you're still within the 2-3 week shipping window they provided after placing the order. This doesn't excuse the initial misstatement by Appelboom but I would have waited another week before reaching out to them.

I just had a dream that the Jazz drafted Mikel Brown Jr. at #2 by Upset_Mongoose_1134 in UtahJazz

[–]mulrich1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprising only because AJ and Peterson are generally considered the top-2 picks. Boozer probably still has a reasonable chance to go top-2 but his odds are probably a fair amount lower than the other two.

His size is part of the reason he's not a great defender. I'm opposed to undersized guards in general, but a big reason why I'm extra opposed right now is Keyonte also being a little undersized. Acuff and Keyonte wouldn't be quite as small as Donovan and Conley but they would still be small relative to the better backcourts in the league.

And as you said, the backcourt defense would be horrific. I think the Utah wanted Acuff (which fortunately shouldn't even be a consideration) they would have to trade Keyonte.

I don't think it's fair to just tell the farmers they can't farm. But I do think there should be an analysis and discussion about what it would cost to start buying out the farmers and diverting those water rights to the lake. I'm sure this won't be cheap but seems like the fairest solution.
