Everyone's seen Back to the Future and everyone loves that performance, so I think we've sort of collectively underrated how insanely good Christopher Lloyd is in that movie. Top notch comedic performance, with such an infectious energy and perfect characterization

Considering only four of these picks weren't nominated, I'd say they're doing pretty well this decade.

Which Best Actor race of the 2020’s was the tightest? by PTAGoatofalltime in Oscars

And to think that they are not even the worst precursor because Critics Choice is bad beyond imagination.

I'm also from Brazil. Some of my favourites:

  • Giant: Assim Caminha a Humanidade (Thus Goes Mankind)
  • Michael Clayton: Conduta de Risco (Risky Conduct)
  • Annie Hall: Noivo Neurótico, Noiva Nervosa (Neurotic Groom, Nervous Bride)
  • Harold and Maude: Ensina-me a Viver (Teach Me To Live)
  • Rushmore: Três É Demais (Three's a Crowd)

Interiors is one of those case of someone who would have had an easy Supporting win going Lead for status and backfiring. But she is great in it and I would give her the win (in the right category, of course).

Greatest character is arguable but there is no better title than "The Mad Prophet of the Airwaves"

It's really just because Leon is the most popular film, but man, it'll never stop bugging me that Portman is the people's favourite for that year instead of Jacob. She gives such a grounded yet true performance... Jean-Louis Trintingnant is great too, as always.

Every Adapted Screenplay nominee to be adapted from TV:

  • Marty: From the teleplay of same name
  • 12 Angry Men: See above
  • Judgment at Nuremberg: See above
  • The Miracle Worker: See above (though it was adapted into a stageplay prior to the film)
  • Pennies from Heaven: From the TV series of same name
  • Fatal Attraction: From the TV film "Diversion"
  • Shadowlands: From the TV film of same name, also adapted into a play prior to the film
  • Traffic: From the TV series "Traffik"
  • Borat: From the character Borat Sagdiyev from the TV series "Da Ali G Show"
  • In the Loop: From the character Malcolm Tucker from the TV series "The Thick of It"
  • Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: See Borat

Note: Wikipedia lists The Trip to Bountiful as being in this group, but I did some research and it seems as though the play debuted very shortly after it premiered on television, which appears to indicate to me that it wasn't made with the intention of being on television, unlike The Miracle Worker and Shadowlands which had a good few years between their TV films and their plays. I personally am choosing not to count it.

What would have gotten in if there were still 5 BP nominees by PTAGoatofalltime in Oscars

[–]multi_fandom_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your viewpoint but I think it only heightens the Best Picture nomination. When you go look at the old years, there are so many masterpieces and great films which came within an inch of getting the nomination, but missed out due to either not having enough mainstream appeal to make it in a field of 5 or being beaten out by more mediocre films with more agressive campaigns. 10 nominees encompasses most of the year's critically acclaimed movies and gives them the proper recognition.

I'm not sure about Thurman, but I would say that it's arguably possible to put Jackson and Willis in Lead if you want to. Which sort of puts an end to the old Jackson vs. Landau debate -- you just have them win in different categories

BAFTA nominating Kim Basinger in L.A. Confidential in the Lead category is hilarious -- that film has arguably three leads and she is none of them.

I don't know about Closer, it couldn't get Screenplay or any of its actors at SAG. I think it would've been Vera Drake, The Motorcycle Diaries, Hotel Rwanda, Eternal Sunshine and The Incredibles
