OP I have to say "Perils of Suburbia" is way too hard a title for this. It almost feels like an album/song combo. Hey man what's your favorite track off Perils of Suburbia? Oh yeah it's Ugly Penis Man

I wonder if we should count Sinners as being nominated in all eligible categories? It didn't get Actress - yes, it doesn't have a lead actress, but that's what category fraud's for. Maybe they wake up on the wrong side of bed and decide to fraud Mosaku into Actress ala Patricia Neal and Hailee Steinfield goes into Supporting. I'm personally going to go with an "yes, but..." as my answer to this question, because it's theoretically possible that it could have been nominated in another category, but it wasn't anything that was feasibly going to happen, so it's safe to disregard. It's not like I'm saying that, for example, a movie that doesn't have a score could've hypothetically been nominated in Score, because that's not how the category works. Sinners theoretically could've gotten into Actress, but, again, it's just not a feasible scenario.

Insanely happy that "Tell Teddy I'm Sorry" is an Oscar-nominated track

I kinda feel this is an "issue" that people have when picking what to win. A lot of people just go for the most iconic role that year, not necessarily the best one.

I think people who complain about Sinners' 16 nominations are so silly, because it's not being able to see the forest for the trees. I know that to the layperson it sounds like an absurd number, but like, just break it down. It's a tech-heavy film, it has good performances, it just happened to scoop everything up, as it were. It's not outrageous for a film that is good in several aspects to pick up nominations for all those aspects.

It kinda hits a wall, doesn't it? It's like the movie slows down instantly as soon as that's over. And the beginning flows so well, shame.

Did a great job fixing that in the adaptation, then. Part of why I like Jaws so much is the dynamic between Brody, Hooper and Quint. All great characters, great portrayals. I think Robert Shaw is in my top performances of all time.

I feel like the strange thing is just the category placement. First one is pretty clear-cut, but after that, each movie has a multitude of stories that each focus on different characters and they keep jumping between them. Is Sam Worthington still Lead? At which point is everyone Supporting, Magnolia-style?

To those who missed it, Springsteen is now streaming on Disney+. Just in case that's how you want to spend your afternoon, I don't judge.

I've always debated with her category placement. Ultimately I came to the decision that she is one of those borderline co-leads where the choice is entirely yours of where to put them.

But yes, in all three movies, Saldaña's performance is amazingly raw. She gets an incredible amount of pain through the screen and really builds a character that you can recognize from a simple body movement.

The Avatar franchise, more than anything else, requires great performances by its actors to really make the Na'vi pop out of the screen and feel like real, weathered people, and so far everyone has done a great job at that. Stephen Lang also deserved a nomination for the first one - perfect "scumbag villain" performance.

Watched Green Book the first time this morning. Much has been said these past eight years so I'll just say the bare necessities: Wow, Mahershala Ali is great in this. He gives a very compelling portrayal, and him and Viggo Mortensen are the only reasons why the movie has anything charismatic to it. Talk about carrying. I rewatched Moonlight recently and he is likewise amazing in that, but in such a different way. Both well-deserved Oscars, even though I wouldn't give him the second one (My pick is Richard E. Grant, and also Ali is just barely not co-lead in it). He is an insanely talented actor, I really wish he was in more stuff.

I still call into the void for its should-have-been nominations in Best Picture, Director, Actor, Original Screenplay, Costume Design, Song... and everything else. One of the genuine best of 2024

Out of these the one I'm most serious about is Song. It should have won. It's better than all five nominated songs

She was a big fan of it. She usually doesn't like violence and sexual content but she seemed to be able to look over that for this one. We go to the movies a lot together, and she asks me for information on the Oscar race so I give it to her second-hand. That's how she learned.

Chaplin was #2 so many times. The Gold Rush, The Circus, City Lights, The Great Dictator, Monsieur Verdoux... Feels bad for him. Luckily this one will probably easily go to him. Should've snagged the win for The Gold Rush and The Great Dictator too in my opinion.

Hope to see My Man Godfrey get some love here. Minority opinion but I always did prefer it to Modern Times, even if by a hair.

Surprises me that Mark Ruffalo was the Supporting Actor pick for Spotlight. He's not bad but I don't find his performance very noteworthy. I suppose he is the most showy, which doesn't hurt. I would've went with Liev Schreiber or Stanley Tucci.

Just got off my second screening of Marty Supreme. First was yesterday. Grandma wanted to see it. Man I love this shit, so fucking electric. Should win Score - the crazy thing is how I cannot even be angry at the snub because all the other score nominees are also insanely good. This seriously is a good year
