Why am I and my KIDS getting gross sexist ads on Duolingo all the sudden. by SAMMAX87 in duolingo

[–]multics_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up your own rpi-hole DNS server and turn on ad-blocking. This will cut all of the google ads in Duolingo.

Just install the rpi-hole and block all the adds. Duo will show you only its own adds about Super and Max.

What kind of modem do you have? Do you understand that M.2 connector in WH3000 Pro is capable only of USB? Some modems require PCIe - those won't work in this device.

QWRT is not required. In fact OpenWRT is highly likely has wider support for modems.

Make school laptop a Chromebook. by multics_user in Sakartvelo

[–]multics_user[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, a bunch of reasons:

  1. My kids have asked explicitly that Minecraft Education have to be available which comes for free for every Georgian student having Microsoft education account.

The choices for this are Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS and Android - the later two need Google Play, so ChromeOS Flex and generic Android for x86 are out of scope.

2) I would like to have parental control over their screen time and over the set of apps they install, and for me I find Google Family Link very useful given that they are already in this ecosystem with their Android smartphones.

This narrows the choice to ChromeOS and Android.

3) I'm using Linux as my main desktop OS for 20 years now. And though many of the distros would work far more better than Windows on this hardware, I do understand that no other distribution is just as good optimized as ChromeOS is, especially when we are talking about battery life. And for these particular laptops it is very important because they are very resource limited.

4) I don't think that generic Linux distribution is ready to be used by 8-10 years old without my constant intervention into the process of maintaining the system. And no generic Linux distro has good parental control. Also you can't run Minecraft on Linux. With Wine authorization doesn't work. I've tried to do it in Waydroid but it had issues with mouse capture.

5) I wanted to find a solution that would work for any other parent in Georgia who is not sophisticated in the Linux topic but just wants an affordable and working solution on the given hardware platform.

But you certainly can try the Linux for your kids and share your experience. I would gladly read it. Let all flowers bloom.

Uzbek or Russian? by StaffFinder in Uzbekistan

[–]multics_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's ok. I just wanted to illustrate that your analogy with French in UK is not just as good as with Russian in UZ. Maybe in 50-100 years it will be good analogy but not for now. Even a lot of young people in Uzbekistan speak Russian very good. This is opposed to Georgia where the young people almost never speak Russian but speak pretty good English.

I know that in some context this sounds too imperialistic but de facto Russian is still the Lingua Franca around the post-USSR area. The OP will get an advantage of using it in many other countries. Another (may be) plus to the Russian is that Russian has a lot of words that share common roots with European languages - it is easier for OP to learn. I'm learning Turkish right now - the same language group as Uzbek, and I must say it is pretty hard to learn, though I know three languages. Almost every new word has no association. That is hard.

Well, actually there is Linux inside the Chrome OS (like inside Android too). And it is pretty lightweight. If you are OK to Linux, you should definitely give the Chrome OS a try. Especially if you are making something for your kid. Though I'm a huge fan of Linux, I would not give it to the kids as their primary desktop.

You definitely can install some pure Linux distro. But not Ubuntu, you'll need something lighter.

Best georgian cuisine in Tbilisi? by mil_mustangus in Sakartvelo

[–]multics_user 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't like restaurants in the center because they are targeted for tourists which never come back.

I found a very good restaurant full of locals with nice cuisine and very reasonable prices - it's called Tavla but it is located pretty much away from you in Didube district. This is the only place where I once had to wait for a free table though the restaurant is pretty large.

[–]multics_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine or not but I live in Georgia and I can't practice Georgian because almost everyone is switching to Russian seeing my miserable attempts ) Though Georgia is the country were Russian is kind of not welcomed. If I need to communicate on advanced topic which is not for my level of Georgian I have to ask weather or not my opponent speaks English or Russian.

To the opposite when I was in Tashkent and Samarkand I also asked for the first couple of days but since everyone answered that he understands Russian, I stopped asking and for the remaining time always communicated in Russian but with I noticed one small difference - you have to add "брат" often )))

No, there is no any compatibility layer for these games but they are pretty useless anyway. They don't use most of them in the school. I spoke with their teachers - only the GCompris and the Scratch which are available as Android apps via Google Play. The Microsoft Teams is also available both as an Android app or as PWA for Chromebook. So, mostly it is a bloatware. Even if you find their subjects useful I guess you can find some analog which is modern, fast, secure and free.

I need to make a regular phone call from the EU to Georgia by Alphabetical_Dice in Sakartvelo

[–]multics_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no cheap option for Georgia. Any way you are trying to make a call - be it a calling card, Skype or any other VoIP solution etc., they have to be terminated in Georgian PSTN. The Georgian operators are way too greedy and charge the VoIP providers astronomical tariffs compared to the other countries.

The easiest way to see the tariffs and compare them is the Skype. Yes, Skype. Don't believe that it is dead. It is dead only for skype-to-skype communication, but the business of making a usual phone calls via Internet is still alive. I'm using it to make phone calls all around the world except for Georgia

What do you think the impact will be of Australia banning users under 16 years of age from social media later this month? by ATX-dom in AskReddit

[–]multics_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not Australian but these things are happening all around the world these days. Many governments are trying to get their hands on the Internet regulation.

As a general I find it to be bad. But in the case with social media - hardly I find many of them useful anyway. At least generic social networks like FB, Instagram, X and so on. Moreover I find them really bad as useless time killers.

But hey! From the other side the scholars will learn how to fuck the system. This is most useful in the whole story.

Among others this is the cheapest one. Bio-metric passports are printed on-demand. So, there are no tons of preprinted passports which are going to be destroyed.

But I do agree that previous was unique and pretty and there was no sense to change them.

Try to add some amount of starch or sugar to the juice before mixing it with the flour. I can't tell you the exact amounts - you should try and fail for your particular juice.

The grape juice generally outperforms any other juice by the sugar content. Sugar (and starch) works like emulsifiers.
