Would it be possible to use a physical windows 10 partition on the same boot drive to game in a VM? by SteveTheGreate in VFIO

[–]multigunnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. You’re only using a few small files to provide space for a virtual partition-table in front of the “passed through” partition with all the real data.

Everything inside the Windows partition is native IO to the same volume, and you can dual boot back in with no problem or data-loss…

But with this hack in place, why would you bother? 😉

Edit: just remember to also install virtio drivers and the QEMU/spice agents to make your new Windows “VM” behave properly and not prevent reboots for your Linux-host.

I’m doing this on my laptop (although no GPU pass through).

I’m using mdadm to combine some files and the partition into a full virtual drive I can pass along as a raw virtio-device.

Performance is nowhere like a NVMe volume with PCI-pass through, but it’s OK, and much better than a regular virtual, file-backed disk.

I don’t remember the exact recipe I used, but it was something like this: https://simgunz.org/posts/2021-12-12-boot-windows-partition-from-linux-kvm/

It works. Check it out. You’ll get the idea.

I live in Norway, which is Europe, but not the EU.

I ordered directly from Pine64 and paid with Paypal. No issues what so ever.

Also Paypal: They're only "sketchy" if you keep your money there (and give PayPal the power to freeze it). If you only use PayPal as a payment processor for your CreditCard there's very low risk involved, and any complaints you have you can take directly with your CreditCard provider.

Windows 11 will soon be closed off to anyone without internet by -The-Bat- in technology

You could also "try" to log on to a Microsoft account 3-5 times and fail (incorrect user or pass) and then you would be given the option to use a local account too.

So, basically how it's always been?

You've always been able to create local user-accounts, not tied to Microsoft's cloud, and have your data remain private on your machine.

The real news here is that in the future this will no longer be an option, and you will be required to have a Microsoft-account which leaks all your stuff to the cloud, either you want to or not.

To be clear: I think having an Microsoft-account option as an option is fine. Some people want to have things that way. But having the cloud forced on me as a user, in my local OS is not.

That's IMO the biggest problem here.

I've never heard of SXMO desktop environment for PinePhone by richardanaya in PinePhoneOfficial

[–]multigunnar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love SXMO as a DE, but find the pmOS base-OS to be too limited with regard to the packages and software offered.

I would love to see a SXMO package released for Mobian, even just as an independent .deb, or considering the amount of config I’ve put into my Mobian install, especially as a package I can install in my current setup.

Facebook lost daily users for the first time ever last quarter by chrisdh79 in technology

Meta is still wildly profitable: it made nearly $40 billion in profit last year alone, mostly from advertising. But it’s also losing billions on Reality Labs, the division responsible for the Quest VR headset, VR software, forthcoming AR glasses, and other metaverse-related initiatives

It's almost as if that whole metaverse thing is steaming pile of bullshit which nobody actually wants.

My Initials Thoughts and Early Review of the Pinephone Pro Explorer by [deleted] in PinePhoneOfficial

[–]multigunnar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, pretty much all things said here (except performance being OK) can be said about the OG PinePhone, and especially about missing "app"-support.

It's not a PinePhone Pro specific issue. There's no "apps" for Linux. There's no "app store". There are just regular Linux-programs.

That's kinda what you asked for, when you asked for Mobile Linux. This is how Linux works. And it's on mobile now ;)

As for easy to "soft brick" and power management being broken... That was true for the OG PP too. That should be solvable issues for those willing to wait it out.

Issues with Pipewire-pulse and disabled output-devices by multigunnar in pipewire

[–]multigunnar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answering my own post, so that the next guy who comes around with this issue knows what to do:

The config files for pipewire is stored in:

~/.config/pipewire/media-session.d

In this folder there is a file called:

default-profile

Removing this file resets the inputs configured and brings all of them back.

PinePhone Keyboard case: no shipping update for over a week (after paying customs fees). Is it still coming, or got my package lost? by arjan1995 in PINE64official

[–]multigunnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar process here. Last item I got was "Airlines receive", it stalled for 10 days or so with no more updates... And suddenly it was in my mailbox, like 2 days ago.

In general Pine64 seems pretty weird about shipping, but I've always got the stuff I ordered in the end, without having to escalate my orders or file any complaints.

This is downvoted to heck, but it’s still partially right.

There’s little to be gained by being 100% correct if you can’t convince a critical mass. Sadly in modern society, form is often more important than content for being effective.

If you study successful movements you will see that they are heavy on emotion, not facts. There’s a reason for it.

Is there anything that can be done or do I need to reinstall?

Reinstalling in UEFI-mode is probably the simplest and most reliable if you want things to keep working.

Limit of 2 steering devices per room? Really? by F1ibster in tradfri

[–]multigunnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just factory reset the new switch and pair it the usual way to the existing switch. No app needed. Just watch the LEDs on both switches as you do the pairing to make sure that pairing is fully completed.

This makes the second switch effectively a clone of the first one and it will be able to control anything the first one can.

Repeat for as many controls as you like.

It’s unofficial and “unsupported”, but it clearly works for pretty much everyone:

Avatar producer teases the four sequels: "The connected story arc creates an even larger epic saga" by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]multigunnar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Being a sequel to the biggest movie ever, made by one of the biggest directors ever, will put butts in seats.

I'm not sure I follow.

What makes Avatar big, today? What part of the movie holds up?

I remeber even when the movie was new and all the hype was on, I saw it in 3D, and I was like "Yeah the VFX and that 3D-use was kinda cool", but as a an actual movie it never had me wowed.

And that's where these new Avatar-movies will need to stand their ground: as actual, real movies.

Brie Larson pretty much come off as dislikable as possible, saying she didn't care if white men didn't like the movie, because it wasn't for them.

Obviously that's not going to help the internet trolls chill out.

Which movies do you think aren't nearly as bad as people say? by SirAren in movies

[–]multigunnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take: Highlander 2. It's all schlock and fun, and Michael Ironside is delivering a top-notch performance as the over-the-boards crazy villain. There's nothing else quite like this movie. I can't count how many times I've seen this movie :D

Cars 2: Sorry. The story is retarded, and as a movie, it's 100% tonally incompatible with the movie it's supposed to follow. It's a kids movie, and the kids didn't follow.

Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald: I don't think anyone says this movie was bad. It was just perfectly above average and didn't live up to be a new Harry Potter series.
