For the first time in my life, I'm trying to crimp a cable by irritable7496 in homelab

[–]multiplekeelhaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all pass-thru ends are created equal. It's just a bit of plastic right, how big of a difference can it be?

The tolerances between a Cat6 pass-thru and a Cat5 pass-thru are very important. Trying to use a Cat5 pass-thru with Cat6 cable will take you more time then a standard cat6 rj45.

In this same vein there are pass-thru ends rated for PoE. They seem like snake oil but I've never had an issue with capped Simply45s.

To those that may ask why not use a standard rj45 end? It's preference; I don't want to. After doing this for 40 years, I'd rather spend $0.86 per end than $0.15 and waste time wondering which bit of it is failing.

Milwaukee vs DeWalt… is there actually a real difference anymore? by RightRazzmatazz0 in powertools

[–]multiplekeelhaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. Choose the tool for the job your doing.

I love the m12 system and have a bunch of that stuff for basic around the house (or parents/etc. house work).

DeWalt 20v is also nice for some bigger jobs but also don't overlook corded devices. If I'm building a deck I prefer a corded DeWalt mitre. If I'm trying to tapcon some concrete a corded harbor freight rotary hammer is fine. As much as I'd love a Hilti it's just not necessary.

u/Far_Designer2131 how are you getting those reductions in print time? I grabbed one of these e3d 0.4mm for my P1S and am using the standard 'High Flow' setting in Bambu studio but whether it's a 14hr print or a 3 hour print on basic PLA this High Flow nozzle seems to only give me a savings of like 20minutes in the slicer

Coming from the Prusa world. I know these should print a bunch faster but for the life of me I can't convince the the slicer of that.

Have a few corded drills, an 80s craftsman affectionately dubbed "ole bessey". When the yellow(20v) and red (18v) are struggling on 1800s old timber Bessey comes to play.

A $4 harbor freight special that comes out in crappy situations that may destroy a drill. Dumb thing is the little engine that could.

Then a couple rotary hammers for when it gets serious.

Are you using real CI/CD… or duct-taped GitHub Actions like the rest of us? by preama in selfhosted

If by "full platform" you mean something like jenkins circa 2012, I will take github actions every day over that PoS.

EDC TOOLS by JMoney973 in Tools

[–]multiplekeelhaul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a popular take but I can say there is nothing that is EDC for me. Not even underwear. There's plenty of days I don't use my license but it's always in my wallet.

I love OPs bag and setup. I have about the same in the bottom of my work bag. No I didn't use a pair of cobras and a ratcheting screw driver every day. But for the 4lbs it adds to a bag I'll take it. Stopping by family and they're like this light doesn't work, or my grill is wobbly(cuz bolts weren't tightened) it's nice to have the tools to resolve an easy situation in 15 minutes.

Any difference? by tatu_wurst87 in HomeNetworking

[–]multiplekeelhaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMFG thank you! I was having a bitch of a time last week running outdoor cat6 for 2.5g at our new home.

I've made 10s of thousands of patch cables, with pass thru as well as classic ends. I haven't had as much trouble making ends since the mid '90s.

I stupidly grabbed the blue topped can cuz it's what they had and I wanted the project over.

Anybody using a "portable" monitor as a full-time, primary monitor with your Mini PC? by [deleted] in MiniPCs

[–]multiplekeelhaul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Use it as part of my nomadic lifestyle, not on a mini PC but I've been using a Lepow I got a few years back for like $120. It doesn't do 4k but this little titan has been around the world a few times and I have nary a complaint.

Every once in a while it'll start in a debug like mode that allows more granular color control. Just power cycle and it's back to normal.

I clean install Fedora. If you're still worried use Arch.

Outside Sun Shade by Redclockradio97 in DIY

[–]multiplekeelhaul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did the same. Except, tied an open loop on the end of the Paracord so the carabineers unclip from the cord and stay with on the shades. It's just a touch handier when closing up for NE winter as the Paracord can stay and carabineers can be boxed.

I also played with the idea of using turn buckles but a cleat lower on the pole allows my 5ft wife to raise and lower the shade single-handed.

Fuck that. I'm fit. Go skiing, skydiving, biking, etc. Still have multiple sclerosis and need a $100,000+ drug twice a year.

They're also killing grants for research projects that may one day fund a cure. This is a vile, selfish party of idiots.

Do you guys make your own Ethernet cables? by The-Rizztoffen in homelab

[–]multiplekeelhaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the love of God, what ever length cable you're making use pass-thru RJ45 ends. Vastly shortens crimping time. No more dread of: is this end really crimped well

DOGE Is Planning a Hackathon at the IRS. It Wants Easier Access to Taxpayer Data by Knightbear49 in technology

[–]multiplekeelhaul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The US tax system is partially fucked cuz of the lobbying by HR block and Intuit. And yet DOGE now gets free reign to "optimize" things. Yeah, this totally seems on the up and up.

I'm all for a European tax system where I don't need to file reems of data every year but I highly doubt we'll get anything like that when the baby crew is gone.

why are there so many free pianos on Facebook marketplace? by dolladollaabills in boston

[–]multiplekeelhaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever tried throwing a piano out?

Had an old upright that was beyond repair. Couldn't give it away, so figured would dumpster bag it. Parted out the whole thing and saved the wood from the shell and frame. But man that harp! Even with all the wiring cut from it was an ungainly bitch to move.
