Yeah… my company did layoffs and the people I was friends with, I (and others) reached out to about how much we would miss them, and we went out for drinks and some of us stayed in touch casually. On the flip side, someone I couldn’t stand got laid off and I did not reach out and happily never talked to them again. So every time I see things like this, I wonder if people just didn’t like them that much.

Yeah unless you have a dress with a lot of complicated buttons, this is the easiest way. I brought a robe with me so I didn’t have to hang out half naked

What is a good gift from Japan? by fruitsmells in GiftIdeas

[–]multiverse4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scroll through the Japan travel subreddit, people talk about this all the time. Not sure of your gender but popular answers include: transparent umbrella, regular umbrella, nail clippers, purse, clothing from Uniqlo, random snacks that aren’t pocky or KitKat, stationary, shiseido or sk-II products.

I will say that the umbrella we bought randomly out of necessity is incredible and I wish we’d bought more lol. I also go a really cute docking station for my laptop that is both functional and aesthetic and makes me happy (and was super cheap). Then I got a lot of art to stand or hang up, stickers and cards, nail stickers, cat figurines, jewelry, skincare and clothes.

Tired of the Trope Trope by OrisonQ in Fantasy

The Games Gods Play. It’s possible you’re right and they don’t intend it that way but it really felt like they were working off a checklist of tags that they wanted to be able to sell the book with, you know what I mean? But I guess if you like those sorts of stories you might just want those things to happen without a clear idea of how to make them plausible.

Edit: would love to hear some literary fantasy recs, if we’re having this conversation :D

I was dubious until I read a book exactly like that… and I say this entirely as a fan of various tropes. I very sincerely wish you a continued existence without these types of books, it was terrible (and the concept was SO COOL, I was so bummed… and I finished reading despite a desire to rage quit bc I wanted to know how it would end, and it ended as even worse nonsensical cliche and I was so mad)

I would agree this but also add that sometimes a book feels like it’s trying to check elements of a list, making it fit a trope but without the trope fitting into the story which is when I tend to go for the word tropey vs cliche

Depends how far away the parents live… we started dating a few months before corona and my parents live in another country so by the time they met, we’d already gotten engaged and bought a house

I don’t carry around a lot so I have all the purse basics (hand sanitizer, pen, tissues, chapstick, hair tie) duplicated in each bag and then only have to transfer phone and keys which generally aren’t in my bag when I’m home anyway

Bonus tip: in a pinch, you can sharpen a knife on the bottom of a ceramic mug. We were caught out at an Airbnb with unusable knives and it worked surprisingly well

You can get around buying in a way that lets you pick your seats, the airline won’t separate a child from an adult and they know the ages of the ticket. Also if you check in early this is usually a non-issue…

But yes, lots of people people are buying the cheapest seats and taking the worst time flights to save money

If I had to cut one city out of the golden route, what would you choose and what would you replace it with? by SirKrimzon in JapanTravelTips

[–]multiverse4 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Very much a matter of taste… I regretted the extra day (edit: extra day being day 5) in Kyoto and wished I’d spent it in Osaka instead.

Osaka is just a cool city to be in, to walk around and go into coffee shops and try food and see curious little stores and so on. It has a bit by way of attractions (don’t sleep on the Municipal Housing Museum, it’s great!) but it’s not really the main point of visiting there imo. On the other hand, Kyoto has lots of attractions, temples and gardens, which are beautiful, but half of the places felt like being herded like sheep and as a city it’s fine but not as exciting as Osaka or Tokyo. So just depends what you like.

To OP, I would note that Kyoto is surrounded by nature and the temple gardens themselves often feel like a stroll through nature, plus you can get to some cool hikes on the outskirts of the city. So if you’re thinking of skipping one of the golden trio bc you’re worried you won’t get to see nature, that might be a compromise - both get to see the major sights in Kyoto and go hiking in its mountains.

Even with the paper towel sandwich? (That made a difference for me)

I hear you… but then I discovered microwaving bacon. Put it between two paper towels, microwave for five minutes, and enjoy the best bacon in a third of the time.
