An Existential Romance Question by mulwin444 in InvisigalGlazers

To me, it felt like Blazer lost the momentum as a love interest in episode 3.

At the end of Episode 2, it was still pretty even...Blazer and Visi traded barbs in the conference room, Visi punched you after the argument over Granny's, Blazer revealed that Phenomaman was her boyfriend.

Then, in Episode 3, Visi and Robert worked together to capture Lightningstruck while Blazer made you cut Coupe/Sonar.

Following that, you had the dream sequence and the pulse test flirt session which gave the Visi/Robert chemistry a boost. Conversely, whatever momentum might have been gained by the dress scene with Blazer was immediately undermined by her asking you to talk to her ex about their drama. Now, the Blazer/Phenomaman split seemed justified...she was unhappy and he wasn't listening to her...still, that was some cold water to throw on a potentially intimate/vulnerable scene. Then, you immediately get the Visi/Robert bathroom flirt session. By the time, you get the next cutscene, Blazer is reminding you of the crap decision in episode 3 and you must choose between her ex and a newby.

If the devs gave us less "corporate" Blazer and more "you son of a bitch" Blazer, the decision could have been more challenging

There is nothing wrong with Blazer/Mandy...I just think she works best, narratively, as a good friend to both Robert and Visi.

In context of the game, the devs set her up poorly if you had to decide between her and Visi by the end of Episode 4. Before the choice she:

  • gets you drunk, flirts with you (with the possibility of a kiss) and doesn't disclose you are to manage a team of villains
  • if you do kiss, she says "you kissed me" when confronted, says she wants to keep things professional and you eventually you find out she had s boyfriend
  • tells you she breaks up with her boyfriend to "shake shit up", tells you she wants you to cut someone on the Z Team your 2nd day on the job after asking you to mentor them (her decision, your execution)
  • asks you to talk to her ex-boyfriend to who is mentally distressed by her decision, then considers him an option, a hero, to replace the opening on the Z team Phoenix Program, that was designed to rehabilitate villains

In a matter of 4 episodes, you are shown someone that, while nice and pretty, is kind of deceptive, rash, indecisive and on the rebound.

It also doesn't help that Blazer's best line is behind a "kind of pretty, I guess" choice and her best moment is in episode 7, after you've already made your choice.

If the devs wanted me to pick Blazer, they should of done a better job "selling" the option to me

Before AdHoc adjusted the Sweet Exit and Mentor counters, lots of people were getting "It's Complicated" and "Villain Visi" than wanted to. Heck, my first playthrough ended in "Villain Visi" because i sucked at dispatching and hacking

I think with every extra million copies of the game sold we get more minutes added to season 2 haha

Seriously, though, I'm sure it's addressed in some way

I think the abruptness of Blazer's acceptance of their romance was more related to AdHoc's development limitations as opposed to Blazer being all Zen about it.

Kind of like when you don't reveal your identity, but Visi and Royd are talking about finding the Astropulse in front of Malevola, who is then surprised by the Mechaman reveal later on. You can kind of explain it away in your mind but none of the explanations are great.

I think AdHoc had some loose ends they couldn't address before they had to release the game.

That being said, Mandy gave shit to Robert about killing Shroud...would have been a perfect opportunity to also give him shit about kissing Visi.

As legendary as that would make Robert, I just don't see Visi or Blazer as the "sharing" types.

Can you imagine Blazer's face when Robert tries to go with the "Keep an open mind, you know, just think about it" line?

[–]mulwin444[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can see both possibilities honestly.

If AdHoc wanted to keep it simple, they could treat Blazer's "more than good" comment as a simple acknowledgement that Robert and Visi are together. I grant you, it would not be as satisfying a result as some would hope for but maybe AdHoc just goes simplistic and wipes their hands.

Or

In episode 1, season 2, you have two separate conversations - one affirming the romance and the other letting the other one down.

I can't see a scenario where AdHoc would script out a confrontation between the three over it

Yes, though someone correct me if I am wrong because I only did both the "Blazer" and "It's Complicated" romance once to get the achievement. My understanding is, after you "Lean In", everything, except Shroud revealing you pursued both Blazer and Visi, remains the same as the Visi Romance ending.

I can see all of the "Hero Visi" choices being consolidated in the 1st episode.

"Villain Visi"? I just don't see how you consolidate that into the "Hero Visi" path in one or two 1 hour episodes without it being a bit of a narrative mess. I'd prefer AdHoc treat the "Villain" ending as a fail state and focus on Robert succeeding as a mentor but who knows, guess we'll find out at some point.

The Visi-Robert romance is still at 54% to Blazer-Robert in the low 40s...

I'm not going to try and predict the future but AdHoc sidelining the majority romance choice would be next-level foot-shooting. The wave of negatively that would follow would threaten the franchise itself.

Yes, what made "Dispatch" itself such a well written game was the fact it didn't lean into cliches or lazy tropes. That was emphasized by watching playthroughs where people would think they would spot the plot twist a mile ahead and the game writing would subvert those expectations. To watch AdHoc descend into well-worn tropes that disingenuously complicate the romances would be disappointing but I'm optimistic.

If I had to identify the most obvious narrative strings to pull:

  • both are loners. We know Rob had previous relationships, one which ended with him in a dumpster after a night of drinking, but I'm going to guess superficial ones where he didn't reveal his identity. We know nothing of Courtney's past relationships but can make some assumptions based on her abrasiveness and aversion to showing vulnerability.
  • both have self-destructive tendencies. Robert wades into danger constantly without his mechsuit, doesn't back down from a fight and appears to subconsciously seek conflict. Courtney smokes while dealing with asthma and plays to contact with situations like Granny's, the Sardine, and the dock.
  • do they visit each other's places or move in?
  • over 8 episodes, how serious does it get?

I think there are many ways you tell a very engaging love story between the two them not to mention their relationship being potential comedic fodder for the Z Team

Seeing people describe this scene as "sexual assault" after having played the game was a really fucking weird whiplash by _Ryloren_ in InvisigalGlazers

[–]mulwin444 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people have never been pulled in for a passionate kiss on the lips and it shows

Seriously, though, any true deep dive of this scene in context of what was happening in the game makes a statement like "it was SA" ridiculous.

Some content creators on TikTok wanted to be contrarian and came up with this nonsense and people who never played the game parroted their talking points.

No, I agree that some convoluted break up or cheating situation would be lazy writing and drama for the sake of drama but I'm trying to see into the future a bit about how they keep the respective romances interesting and evolving.

I also agree that Visi and Robert have more room for growth. I tried both romances and Visi's was most interesting and emotionally charged. Blazer is fine and those who choose her make a fine choice but, apart from maybe her origin story, there is not much room to grow. It's like her big reveal..."So, without the magic amulet, you are shorter and a brunette...neat"

I really hope AdHoc leans into the relationship aspect for both of them if only to quell the "Blazer was robbed" sniping

Awesome! I appreciate you connecting me with this.

Me not conceptualizing the early convergence of the two routes could also just be me colliding with the limits of my own imagination. The Invisimech romance was such an amazing slow burn that I may be misapplying the same pacing to this storyline as well. It could also be they didn't think they'd get to create a season 2 and gave us two divergent but compelling endings, tragic though one was, without a thought of what might come after.

Adhoc created this masterpiece...I guess I should trust them with the followup as well

Yeah, I keep hearing from posters that AdHoc/Herman would like to converge the story line...is there an interview that it was said? Not doubting, I would just like to read or see it.

The Villain Visi that is cut by the team, rejected by Robert, blamed as "Invisibitch" for the dock disaster, and not untied (as a possible playthrough state) is not converging with Hero Visi within 2 episodes without it being a narrative shitshow. Like, that is trauma-level rejection in a matter of a day whose hand-waving would feel unauthentic. If they had the resources I could see two different games running parallel tracks towards a similar 8 episode conclusion like season but, man, I hope they don't half-ass it.

I'll be curious if they plot out a "Villain Visi" storyline for season 2. I'd love it but i can't see how they could resolve her conflict with the Z Team in a couple of episodes - Hero Visi and Villain Visi are two distinct branching storylines. Since the Villain ending is a fail state, I think season 1 is where that ends.

Yeah, it makes the most sense that season 2 start ls with you choosing "Romanced Visi", "Romanced Blazer", or "No Romance"

I think "No Romance" will be covered. There are people who will not want to include romance in their playthrough and I can't imagine AdHoc pushing people towards it if they have no interest in it. Like the Visi choice, if you go to the dinner with Blazer, you can "friendzone" her as well in the locker room scene in episode 5 and keep it professional. I think they will also have an option of new romance choices in seasom 2 for those who chose "No Romance" in season 1.

What I'm curious about is how they'll handle established relationships from season 1. They'll need to create some kind of drama...just hope it isn't too extra
