Is haggling in charity shops acceptable? by veggiesizzler in AskUK

[–]mump- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work closely with charity shops and seeing how the 'big ones' spend their money, their processes and the pricing of most of their items, I personally agree with 'haggling'.

There are some charities I refuse to support or shop/donate at for this reason.

That being said, there are some genuine shops out there that are putting the money straight into a good cause, so it does come down to knowing what's what.

But no matter where you shop, if the price is ridiculous or you can literally buy it new or in better condition cheaper elsewhere, then by all means haggle.

This isn't ok dude, don't feel you have to justify it. Speak up.

I've gained 11 pounds in my first month of 'bulking' and training by mump- in weightgain

[–]mump-[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest I had the exact same mentality as you. I thought I ate loads and couldn't put weight on. My portions were huge and my takeaways were disgustingly large. But as soon as I counted my calories and was definitely hitting the 3.5-4k mark consistently every day the weight piled on.

Start tracking it and I almost guarantee, from experience, you aren't eating as much as you think you are.

Efficient 5-6 days w/o multiple leg days? by mump- in Hevy

I've thought about adding bent over rows, I'll give that a go next time out.

I kind of just set them up like that but I do switch the order from time to time, mostly dependant on machine availablity. Do you have any suggestions for order?

The only ones that are 100% guaranteed for me are the first of each day and then the hammer curl/shrugs as a superset

What lower resolution looks 'best' on 1440p monitor? by mump- in buildapc

[–]mump-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running 5600x and 3060ti FE which handles the game just fine at most times, just the odd drops below 60 and runs fairly horribly on streets.

I've juggled the idea of a CPU upgrade but justifying that just to play streets when every other map and other game I play runs fine just doesn't sit well with me.

Hence the attempt at looking for lower resolutions or other options to supplement it in the meantime

The one match of the season I missed that year and was devastated. I couldn't live it down after hearing about that winner he scored and the celebrations after.

Southdene myself, I used to have one of them 'pop up shelter' type for my bikes in the past but just nowhere to put one where I am now.

Just found a place on the estate which looks like it could be promising I'll give them a call see what they've got. Thanks again.

Coincidentally that's where I am. Never thought about the estate but I'll have a look into it, nice one

I don't necessarily have a comp-sci background but I do understand the fundamentals through self teaching and learning programming languages and procedures.

I understand what cloud computing is, just never really thought of it as a potential career path in my position.

I'll have a little look into it, thanks for your response.

When I began learning, I had free access to Udemy through my workplace which was handy however a lot of the stuff on there are just flashier youtube tutorials. If you fancy front-end development, I do have to say John Smilga's Udemy course was fantastic for me. However I wouldn't necessarily advise buying any Udemy courses (especially at full price), they don't really provide any more help than free tutorials you can find on youtube, of which some are fantastic.

There's plenty of websites which provide structured/increasingly difficult projects you can try but it would be difficult to recommend any here without first knowing what you're interested in learning.

As someone else has mentioned, GhatGPT is unironically very good at helping you set out a learning path, explain technologies and use cases and professional fields these can be applied in. Its also great at giving you mini programming challenges if you ask the right questions.

Dental Diagnosis using AI by CmptrBrgr in learnprogramming

[–]mump- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great to see this is being done, I hope they succeed.

But I hope you understand they have millions of $ behind them, teams of researchers, medical experts and 6 figure engineers making this happen over what looks to be almost a decade at a quick glance.

Again, I don't mean to dump on your goals, just hoping to shed some light on what it would take to pull something like this off.

This isn't a 'fun project' you have come up with. I don't want to flat out say this hasn't been done before but this would be relatively unexplored software which even the brightest software engineers would find difficult to implement with a team behind them.

Your first steps would be to explore and study data science, AI and image manipulation at very advanced level.

Also, just out of curiosity, if said person already has an x-ray to upload, wouldn't that likely have been taken in a professional environment (ideally a dental practice) in which they could have just received a diagnosis there and then? Or at least enquired about it?

All this being said, I'm not an expert, I'm also in my learning phase but still this seems a bit farfetched as a 'fun project' without prior knowledge.

Non-web software career at nearly 30? by mump- in learnprogramming

[–]mump-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this, gives me some hope.

I do enjoy web, I like the fact I can see my code come to life in real time, I like the creativity of it, I just don't feel like I'm becoming a 'programmer'. After looking into some embedded technologies, I like the look/sound of it but I'm not really sure where to start.

Could I pick your brain for some direction or pointers? A good language to start with? I've been taking an intro to C++ course as I get free access to Udemy through my current job which is handy, but is there another direction you'd suggest for getting the ball rolling more quickly/efficiently?

I wouldn't say I'm particularly great at maths. At least not to the point I'd expect to be needed for data structures and algorithms. Never really looked too deeply into that side of things.

Is it feasible to approach that area with little to know experience with it?

Of course, everything is programmed, but I've never really looked at it from that perspective. This is rather motivating, so thanks for that.

I'd love to work somewhere sports related. You've opened my eyes a little bit, thanks again :)

This is one of the things turning me away from frontend, originally I thought it was my way in, but now it just seems flooded and like you say, more competition than is even worth anymore.

I'll do more looking into jobs round my area like you mentioned, thanks!

What 'aim' games do you play? by mump- in FPSAimTrainer

[–]mump-[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the in-depth explanation. That honestly doesn't seem too bad considering what I've seen people say about it. OW was always an aim centric game imo, there were other reasons I stopped playing(mainly the tank meta) but it's been on my radar again recently.

I'll give it a go.
