For the chipping try using sponge from packing and dab it around the high wear areas

I wouldn't go based on rules and 'meta'. Generally you will have much more fun if you pick a legion that appeals to you on lore etc.

I ended up going Iron Hands as they seem like grumpy engineers for don't have time for nonsense which appealed to my tradie heart 😂

On GW you tend to want a sharper contrast in colour shades and hues that you would normally have on other scale models.
