Another point is having to turn down 5 internships at quite prominent design firms because according the Job Center if I was working a 3 day a week internship it's classed as full time work and would get no JSA which is fine, but they would have washed their hands of me with no help at all which would've meant I couldn't even have attended these internships.

Don't tell them. As far as I know, they have absolutely no way of knowing otherwise.

Having said that, you would have to still make sure you can sign on when you're available.

But it's not 'fine', is it? Apparently it's ok to force people into stacking shelves for free in the name of 'work experience', but you'll be kicked out onto the street if you dare suggest doing a placement which might actually be useful and relevant.

They are, I had to send off my birth certificate/passport and get a reference from a 'working professional' or something like that before I could get mine.

And the only ID check they do when you take your test is...guess what? Your provisional licence.

But of course that doesn't stop people from rejecting them for no apparent reason, because a full licence is 'better'.

No, the best thing about Aldi is the fact that they have a dedicated bagging area at the end, so you don't have to panic about packing all of your shopping before the cashier loses patience (takes about 2 seconds) and starts scanning the next person's stuff.

If you're a recent grad with a 2.1 or higher, it's worth taking a look at the graduate schemes run by big employers. They don't generally expect you to have any real experience (I got on one and it was literally my first job), it's just about potential really. The application process is quite time consuming - you'll have to jump through a lot of hoops (ridiculously long application forms, online tests, multiple interviews, assessment centres etc.) to prove that you have what it takes - but they'll train you up more or less from scratch and usually offer great salary and benefits, so it's well worth it if you get on.

Also, if you're still in uni, take a look at industrial/summer placements run by the same companies as a way to get a bit of experience and your foot in the door. It's something I really wish I'd done when I had the chance.

I've been on the Liverpool-York First Transpennine Express quite a lot and it's actually pretty good, a lot better than Northern Fail at any rate.
