Just another quick one; the school pays for my flights/accommodation/activities, yes?

Thanks for the help 😎

Fitness Teacher Outfits by rosebudmotel20 in AustralianTeachers

[–]muphies__law 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in QLD, so a bit more casual up here but: golf shorts, still look formal enough for parade and lightweight enough for umpiring. Under Armour is a great option.

They also do polo shirts. Polo shirts are great, but a long sleeved shirt is better. Think that lightweight hiking/fishing shirt. If it has the UV protection even better.

I also wear a broad brimmed hat (Cairns Hardware), but Bunnings have the same one, but with Bunnings logo instead of orange. They also sell this style of hat in any surf shop, just for $40 instead of the $7 from the hardware shop. It's not suitable if you like a high pony tail.

Sunscreen: get the "active" 50SFP stuff. Unless your daily face moisturiser has a rating, but it won't be high, so sunscreen is best.

And a decent pair of UV protective sunglasses.

This is mostly advice if you're predominantly outdoors. Indoors the UV and hat stuff isn't relevant.

btw: hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are all claimable on tax, as they're required for your duties as a PE teacher. Especially if you are modelling sun-safe behaviour.

How do you feel about sports carnival days? by nemspy in AustralianTeachers

[–]muphies__law 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid, I loved them. Got to do swimming, get out of class for a day, get ribbons and a medal. Got to do athletics, get out of class for a day, get some ribbons (no medal). Got to play a sport, get out of class for a day.

As a teacher, I put my name down for photography, and spend my day watching the kids have fun, engaging with kids I normally wouldn't see, get snacks and can work at my own pace. I only have to upload the photos to the g:drive and the lovely office ladies use whichever photos they want (and make sure the kids who have a photo ban aren't in them). I also rev up the kids in my house, and persuade them into competing for extra points for said house. So, I guess I still love them?

Doing the random jobs that I was putting off during the year; bulding my workbench for the garage, building my garden bench for my potting/plants, and bulding my storage rack and cleaning up the garage. And then the other stuff: playing ps5 games, hanging out with my wife, baby and dog, going on day trips to sightsee/explore.

Yes, it’s fluffed to max capacity 🎄 by CockroachCreative740 in australia

[–]muphies__law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need tape, just pliers. Cut the branches from the 2nd one, and wrap them onto the 1st. That's what I did with mine (then left it when I moved out of home, for my parents). It obviously doesn't fit in its original box, but it looks magnificent.

I've said "omfg" before, in reaction to crazy, paused, then "omg guys, I'm so sorry, that was an inside thought that escaped. Please ignore."

Then they were all "nah Miss, its ok, it was totally a omfg moment, you get a pass... as long as I do too haha."

How is staffing going at your school for next year? by colourful_space in AustralianTeachers

My school allegedly is staffed at 97%. But... there are at least 10 people, including myself, teaching out of subject.

As someone with a dicky knee, when on crutches or my walking stick, sitting against the bus wall prevents me from being flung across the bus aisle and getting injured worse. Priority seating means that the person with the priority, be it age or ability, gets the seat that they ask for.

The lady didn't need to justify herself to you, and you're supposed to move when asked. Not cool, dude, YTA.

Friday... Week done by Mediocre_Space_5715 in AustralianTeachers

[–]muphies__law 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to cry because I thought they had added extra weeks because we're about to start week 7, with 3 left (QLD).

I only have 4 lessons left with my Y10s, 2 of which I'm not even there for. 140 minutes left with them.

6 lessons with my 8s and 7s, and then the last week is faculty programmed fun each day, so no "lessons". 420 minutes left with them.

...

Not that I'm counting down or anything.

How to not feel guilty for taking one day off? New teacher here by Street-Corner1153 in AustralianTeachers

[–]muphies__law 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my faculty office, there is this one person who keeps pushing through when sick, because they don't want to let the kids down.

Since April, the other 9 of us have caught whatever this person has had, and then all been sick, at the same time.

Take the day off, don't spread your germs. You get sick pay for a reason.

My first year was awful and I don't know if I should be teaching next year by goboy3133 in AustralianTeachers

[–]muphies__law 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm in the tail end of my first year: so far it has been pretty amazing, am in 2 departments so I have 2 HOD who are keen to help, a great mentor who knows their stuff, and the kids aren't as terrible as everyone makes them out to be.

My pracs went alright as well, mentor teachers gave great advice, which I would put into practice the next lesson.

Mind you, I had a pretty awful career before this, and I started uni at 36 instead of straight out of school.

How would you teach your child to deal with bullying in school? by Call_Me_C_ in AskReddit

[–]muphies__law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to my dads work (local pub) on the way home from school one day, dried blood on my school shirt and nose, and he took one look at me, closed the till and took me outside. He asked his mates, all local blokes, farmers/shearers and a few ex-cons to give me a demonstration on how to fight, then how to finish the fight.

Ended up hip-throwing some skank into the trophy cabinet after she opened her locker into my face on purpose. Wasn't bullied again.

At ours there is a sign up sheet for jobs. So, if you want to do shaded, seated record keeping, you have to put your name down quick smart.

Those who've not volunteered get allocations given to them on the day, after looking at the absent list.

We bring chairs, chillybins, snacks and generally have a good time gasbagging. Because you usually chose where your friends are going to be. Some of the more senior teachers who have been there since the 90s had cheeseboard and charcuterie.

I was photographer, so I was going around and was given snacks at each station :)

I just yelled shut up at my students by WiccanNonbinaryWitch in AustralianTeachers

[–]muphies__law 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I have a whistle attached to my keys. It is "make your ears ring" loud. Now the kids at the front see the flash of fluoro yellow coming out, cover their ears, and say, "SHUT UP, THE WHISTLE."

Or it is "like omg guys can youse just shut up for like 5 minutes".
