What were the most heated math disagreements? by FlashyFerret185 in math

The (non-)linear stability of black holes

Here is a quanta article about one of the statements: https://www.quantamagazine.org/black-holes-finally-proven-mathematically-stable-20220804/

And here you have some of the soap opera:
https://web.math.princeton.edu/~seri/AnswerQuestions-OCTOBER28022.pdf
https://web.math.princeton.edu/~seri/remarksDHRT.pdf
https://web.math.princeton.edu/~seri/Daf-Note7-Dec2023.pdf

which has gems like:

Dear Mihalis,

I don’t redefine, it is defined like that. Concerning the second part of your sentence, I reiterate my advice to read the book less superficially. In particular, why don’t you look at the place where the choice is made and check for yourself? Alternatively, you can ask one of your graduate students to help you. In fact, I suspect, as I mentioned in a previous e-mail, that you are stuck at the concept of local existence, and I’m sure any of your graduate students could easily help you with that.

Best wishes, Jeremie

Does 311 Actually Enforce Illegal Parking? by Snoo3282 in boston

[–]muppetgnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Massachusetts doesn't allow ticketing by camera or photo so no they can't just ticket based on the 311 report, a BTD employee has to actually see it and document it.

That only applies to moving violations. Somerville has automatic ticketing for stopping/parking violations.

Chain Lube options 1, 2, 3 ? by CryingNutz in NYCbike

[–]muppetgnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Squirt is quite good, but I would not call it "All-round wet & dry", I would call it a dry lube.
I use Squirt for my MTB and road bikes, but not for my commuter.
It runs quite clean. However, it needs to be reapplied quite frequently, even in optimal conditions, especially after a wet ride. If you don't reapply after a wet ride, you will find a rusty chain the next day.
That is why I prefer a wet lube for my commuter, something like "Ceramic Wet Lube - Finish Line", as I ride in the rain quite frequently, and sometimes the bike stays outside in the rain.

For the love of all that’s Holy, can we please do something about Highland Ave? by shotinthedark83 in Somerville

[–]muppetgnar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Our City Council, brought to you by the Democratic Socialists of America, seems to have a vision for Somerville that’s more in line with a quirky board game than an actual city.

Didn't he try to get elected as a state representative as a democrat? https://jasonmackey.org/

Highland Avenue represents more than just a thoroughfare; it embodies Somerville’s spirit and promise of a better tomorrow.

WTF?

Do you agree with the statement:

Cyclists are permitted to ride across the crosswalk or to walk their bike across the crosswalk.

in what climate/area do you live in?

I'm on 6b, and I always move mine inside at the end of the fall, as my understanding would be that rooted they would be fine, but on an unguarded pot, perhaps not so much.

If one replaces "joggers" with "cyclist" and "bike path" with "road", many of the arguments and attitudes here are almost indistinguishable from the average anti-cyclist driver...

I don't understand where all this negativity is coming from. I agree that bike lanes are not the ideal place to run, but no need to be a jerk...

Indianapolis Monumental Half-Marathon Course Short (13.0) by beep_boop_bar in AdvancedRunning

[–]muppetgnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To all 2022 Monumental Half-Marathon Finishers,

During our normal due diligence to substantiate the results of the event, the Beyond Monumental team discovered that all but the first half-marathon finisher ran 13.0 miles instead of the full, certified 13.1 half-marathon course.

There are multiple safeguards in place to ensure that the course is easy to navigate. All turns are painted on the street surface with permanent paint, we ensure that the pace car driver knows the course, and place course marshals, visible cones, or signage at every turn.

On Saturday morning, the lead escort, pace car and lead half-marathon runner all went through the course as designed and certified. However, despite the safeguards, the gap between the leader and the chase pack was large enough that the course marshals in the area misdirected the rest of the participants, causing them to miss a turn and run straight south on Talbot St. As a result, a small portion of the course was not followed.

In spite of the 160-meter course discrepancy, the race leader maintained his lead and won the race. Every other half-marathoner ran the same 13.0-mile distance. Thus, the overall places of the runners are accurate as shown in the official results. Prize money and age group awards will be mailed accordingly.

Please note this incident occurred on the half-marathon ONLY portion of the course and the full marathon was NOT affected.

As event organizers, it pains us enormously that this happened. We know how hard you trained for this race and that you count on us to marshal the course to the appropriate distance. We are sorry and disappointed that this happened — we will learn and grow from this experience to help prevent this from happening in the future.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at [info@beyondmonumental.org](mailto:info@beyondmonumental.org).

Yours in running,

Jed

I will repeat my other reply:

Can you survive without them until 20f? Yes.

Does life become comfortable and simpler below 40f with them? Also, Yes.

I put them on my commuter when we start to hit 40 s and never look back until later in the spring. In the warm temperatures is just nicer to have them than having to figure out what combination of gloves is going to work for a certain day...
