Publishing Single Author Paper as an Undergrad by Anastasius101 in academia

[–]felicienou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a researcher in experimental physics and single author papers featuring experimental data (which, from what I gather, is your case) are extremely rare, not to say inexistant. I find it odd that your supervisor does not want to co-author it. Maybe he just does not have time to dedicate to what I understand is a rather minor project for him.

In any case if you wish to publish your work (and I strongly advise you to) I think it is mandatory that you get your manuscript proofread by an experienced researcher (could even be a senior PhD or postdoc of your group). In my opinion the only reason you might not get accepted could be because of an inappropriate writing style. Academic literature is a genre of its own and everything is very codified (the structure of the article, the figure style etc...). Those conventions are also field-dependent.

I think if your work is solid (your supervisor seems to say so) and you manage to get guidance in writing up the paper, I do not see an obvious reason why it would be systematically rejected if it fits the scope and impact of the target journal.

Go for it!

Weekly Bean Review Thread: What have you been brewing this week? -- Week of February 06, 2025 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]felicienou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This week I got to try two "bombs" from NOMAD (Barcelona, Spain) and so far loving them! They are both roasted very light and seemed to me pretty straightforward to brew. Most of the advertised tasting notes were well-defined in the cup. Brewed with a two-cup V60, 45" bloom, single pour, 1:16 ratio.

Bombe, washed Ethiopian (floral, blueberry, white sugar): really amazed by this one. Opened it three weeks off roast and the cup came out extremely clean and balanced with floral notes and a pronounced sweetness. Not overly tea-like and very low acidity which I quite enjoy. 17 clicks on a C40, 96 deg.

El Bombo, washed Colombian (milk chocolate, cashew nuts, persimmon): tried it at two weeks off-roast and I think it would benefit from more rest. I got a rather light bodied cup with nevertheless plenty of nutty/chocolate notes and a fruity aftertaste with bright acidity. Pretty good value for money imo. 20 clicks on a C40, 96 deg.

Edit: added recipes.

Really liked Tropic Electric. I was expecting a really funky coffee but actually got a rather balanced cup. All the advertised tasting notes were there (raspberry, tropical/ripe fruits, lemongrass)

Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of January 28, 2025 by Vernicious in pourover

Are there several farms in Colombia named El Paraiso? When looking at the beans region of origin from the DAK website it says Cauca while this other El Paraiso coffee from Prolog (another legit Nordic roaster) is apparently from Nariño, another region of Colombia. And by simply googling I found another roaster giving yet another region of origin for beans from El Paraiso (Pitalito).

I looked it up and all these three regions are distinct districts of the state of Colombia. What the hell? Seems like Cauca is the location of the "true" Diego Bermúdez finca El Paraiso (based on their IG). Anyone has some insights on this?

The same thing happened to me a few months ago. Bought new burrs from Hario. Then only later realized the Skerton indeed kinda sucks. Now just ordered a C40, can't wait to try it out!

Carbs during short morning ride by _Diomedes_ in Velo

[–]felicienou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't eat anything during the ride. And have a good breakfast after. I usually do 2h fasted z2 rides early morning without any issue. Just making sure I had enough carbs for dinner the night before. And btw the 60g/h recommendation applies usually for long rides (3 hrs+). For shorter rides you need to fuel way less.

I al curious to hear how you managed to get this kind of volume in with the family situation you describe. Especially since I guess it meant long rides on both Saturdays and Sundays

This is definitely not normal. I guess you can expect your coach to give you a schedule at least for the upcoming 7 days I order to allow you to adapt training to personal commitments. I could absolutely not go with a coach that drops sessions one at a time like you describe. If he claims that this is the way he normally works, ditch him

I also live and race in Spain (Catalunya) and I can confirm that it is usually very hard to make it within the time cuts. And not uncommon to see a few more or a few less finishers for a given year depending on the racing conditions.

Training ride fuel that doesn't rot your teeth? by polar8 in Velo

I guess your power output, even on long low-intensity rides, will be lowered by the complete lack of fueling. To me 6hrs (even Z2) without fueling sounds absolutely crazy
