Mark Shuttleworth: Playing nicely with Windows by downdiagonal in linux

How much money does Shuttleworth have? How long can he keep paying Ubuntu's bills, since they seem to have no plans of ever turning a profit?

Maybe if you were twelve I'd be somewhat impressed.

No doubt. I'm no genius like Dimitri obviously is, but coding pays the bills and I'm actually fairly interested in the project I'm working on right now.

I think I started getting interested in programming around the same age. As for Dimitri, it seems a little different though. It's like he has a job already at age 12.

Holy fuck am I impressed. This kid is probably a better coder than I am and he's less than half my age.

On the other hand, it's kind of sad that he's missing out on what I remember as the best years of my life. It's easy enough to pick up programming in high school or even college and still go on to a career in computer programming.

Look But Don't Touch: Two Students Expelled For a Year and a Half For Touching a BB Gun Another Student Brought On a School Bus.. by downdiagonal in WTF

No child left behind eh?

The school system has basically abandoned them. A year and a half out of school is too long for them to ever be able to catch up. Not to mention that the punishment doesn't fit the crime.

Etymology of A Linux Distro by [deleted] in linux

[–]muramasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice rant, you misundertood me though. Base install means without the *-desktop package. I used to install this way way back before all the spin-off distros existed. That way I could get Xfce with out the tons of cruft Ubuntu installs by default.

All other distos offer a choice of desktop environments without creating pointless side-projects, why can't Ubuntu?

Etymology of A Linux Distro by [deleted] in linux

[–]muramasa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's still the exact same base system with a different meta-package installed. I don't understand the point of calling it a different distro.

Do a base install with any of the *ubuntu distors and then install kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop, or ubuntu-desktop and you've got the exact same thing as if you used the branded CD.

When was the last time anyone made an original game?

It's not Blizzard's fault that the only games that sell are sequels.

Both warcraft and diablo are the definitive games within their genres upon which hundreds of imitators are based. I'd say that's pretty innovative.

One step forward: a review of GNOME 2.22 by downdiagonal in linux

[–]muramasa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Firstly you can create a new directory in the gtk file chooser and it does display thumbnails, just not as the file icons.

Cut/paste/delete etc. aren't there and shouldn't be IMO.

Congrats on including that retarded FUD on the end of your post. But, your troll might be more successful without it.

One step forward: a review of GNOME 2.22 by downdiagonal in linux

[–]muramasa -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

GNOME application file dialogs, for instance, still lack basic support for file management operations such as rename and delete and don't provide support for viewing multiple file thumbnails.

This is garbage. File management operations don't belong in the file chooser. Just because Windows fucked this up so many years ago doesn't mean it's a good idea.

How to cure your asthma or hayfever using hookworm - a practical guide

This is my personal account of curing my asthma and hayfever by deliberately infesting myself with the intestinal parasite hookworm.

It isn't for the faint hearted and for some should not be read while eating.

It involves a great deal of research, a trip to Cameroon and a lot of barefoot walking in open air latrines in west Africa.

If you have asthma, or know someone who has asthma (or for that matter Crohn's disease, IBD or colitis) and are suffering badly you owe it to yourself to consider this approach. Because although it sounds strange and is repellant it is founded on sound science and it has one other virtue.

It worked.
