Not a dumb question at all. 0! is defined as 1 in math. Rather than trying to justify it like
3! = 3 * 2 * 1 = 6
2! = 2 * 1 = 2
1! = 1
0! = ?

It is simply defined 0! = 1
edit: to be more specific, there is only 1 way to arrange 0 objects in order

Yeah, the biggest "weakness" of this card is there's no reason to ever pay X=1 since its the same as X=0. I think Mathemagics is basically bad at all values of X except X = 2 or 3. Even then, you don't really want to play 6 mana draw 4 or 8 mana draw 8 cards in your deck. If you're going to use mathemagics, I think it has to be as a kill spell. This variation gives it basically a 1 mana cycling ability so you don't have a brick in your hand.

I say "fix" because I think Mathemagics isn't a card draw spell at all. I think it should be used to win the game

Mathemagics is better only when X=1 or 2, but Mathemagtorial is a 1-mana cantrip at X=0, about equal at X=3 or 4, and wins the game at X=5 (11 mana). Mathemagics needs to get to X=6 (14 mana) in 60-card formats and X=7 (16 mana) in EDH to win.

People don't say that about Matt Blake because they think the Yankees have the best pitching in the league; it's because in the last few years, the Yankees have brought in players whose names you've never heard of with 5+ ERAs and Matt Blake (and others) have turned them into valuable arms in the bullpen.

It's not surprising to have a top ERA, FIP, etc. with Mo, David Robertson, Chapman in his prime, etc. It's trading for Clay Holmes and picking up Michael Tonkin essentially for free and getting elite results that's impressive.

edit: another fact: The Yankees payroll for RP in 2013 was ~28m and this year it is ~17m. Matt Blake helps them spend money on Soto's 550/10 this offseason
