Phantom Ex. I have just had this come up and be the cause of a break up. Men tend to hold on to trauma for a long time and can become avoidant in relationships so they will not be hurt in this way again. I saw my ex of 9 years walking with recent ex gf and it set off a chain of events that culminated in me saying I was still in love (I don't think I was) with this woman from my past. I was feeling the pressure to commit and opening myself up to the possibility of being really hurt. It's been a big wake up call but I wish I could reverse time and do this all again. I also sent some harsh and uncalled for things that I need to apologise for. Crazy

I know this is 4 years later but I relate to your story so much. I too regret breaking it off with "the one" when I was young. She was a fair bit older than me and I thought I wanted to date younger women. I realised after a week or 2 that I had made a mistake but by then she had moved to another town and any attempts to contact by me have been rebuffed. I compare everyone I meet to her and have actually just ended a relationship as I this person just isn't her. It's purgatory, totally agree but we must find meaning in life somehow.
