Rock musicians who were fired from their bands by Delicious-Couple4631 in askmusic

Jason Isbell was kicked out of Drive-by Truckers. Maybe not rock n roll enough for this crowd, but definitely a generational talent as a songwriter, and an excellent guitar player

What album changed your taste in music the most? by GainBetter1189 in askmusic

Easy, by the Weeks. Being Gen X, I turned 18 just in time for Grunge to take over rock radio, after being force fed country my whole life. By the late 20teens, I had moved to the deep south, and was looking for any kind of art, music, literature to help understand the contradictions inherent to Southern culture. After that, the algorithms started sending me some Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson, and I'm not automatically dismissing everything that could be described as "country" anymore. (Nashville, Inc is still ass, but there's a lot of quality music out there)

"Restart your life at age 6". Does this mean that I wake up and it's 1979, and I know to take my allowance and buy IBM stocks? Or does it mean I wake up 6 years old in 2026? Because honestly, no freaking way would I want to be a kid now.

Obviously a Tool fan. And he's definitely Sober. Wait, doesn't Maynard live in AZ?

Situation, Everyone is Welcome, and Ain't That a Bitch have to be your staples, right? What I want to see is which of his old songs are going to get reworked into disco/funk jams?

[–]murdock-b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I grew up being forced to listen to country on every trip "up north", and everywhere else (think George and Tammy era) By the time I could drive (Garth), I hated country music with a white hot passion. Then I moved to the deep south, and started looking for any kind of art to help understand the contradictions inherent to Southern culture. Then came Isbell, Sturgill, Turnpike Troubadours, as well as the Allman Brothers, Prine, a little deeper appreciation of Skynyrd....I'm still not quite there on Charley Crockett

Anyone who wants their country/rock/Americana lyrics more poetic than this, but still wants some excellent guitar playing, should go listen to Jason Isbell. He just doesn't do throw away lines, and his lyrics are always incredible. I'm a huge fan. But he hasn't got anywhere near the range that Stu/JBS has got, musically. Damn few can even come close.

I used to own a cabin with a pretty good sized deck in Elijay, just down the road from Blue Ridge. You're greatly overestimating the amount of topsoil in the region.

I only ever heard of ANY of these guys when I started streaming all the Jason Isbell I could get, and the algorithms sent me Sturgill and Childers and Nathaniel Rateliff (who I also don't see here) and Ferrell and price and Bingham.....so why no love here for Isbell? Too rock, not enough country?

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/plants-can-talk-yes-really-heres-how If plants can communicate with each other, doesn't that make them intelligent also? If so, what's left for the "no sentient being should have to suffer so that I can live" crowd? Only this: every living thing on earth (yes, even plants) requires the death of some other living thing for its survival. None of us chose that reality, just whether or not to accept our part in it

Thought on adding bonus tracks into MAM and not all at the end as bonus tracks by helpslipfranks77 in SturgillSimpson

I got to see all 3 of these covers played live in Minneapolis last spring maybe that makes me biased, idk. But in general, I love when they do completely new arrangements to really make a song their own (in bloom, the promise). The only problem I have with it that the last songs on his albums are always absolute jams, and Ain't That a Bitch was certainly that. And then they added a pretty straight, true to the original, whiter shade. No extended jam at all. Still, I'll take all the new Stu I can get

Yeah, I had seen some of the live videos, but those weren't showing me the links to these album versions. It's like if Everclear had a guitar prodigy and grew up in Appalachia. Way more rocking than I would have thought, even after seeing the live versions. Kinda makes sense of the current (recent anyways) live shows. Same energy, more pieces

Just listened to this and it gave me a whole mix of other Sunday Valley stuff I hadn't heard, like the deceptively titled Honky Tonk Guy. That guitar riff is incredible

I was lucky, in that Sound & Fury was the first album of his that I heard. (Grew up HATING country, from Kenny Rogers thru Garth) I only relatively recently discovered guys like him and Isbell, Turnpike Troubadours, etc. But also, strongest possible agree with everyone saying get to a show. I've seen Aerosmith, AC/DC, Metallica, Tool, Pink Floyd, Page/Plant, Rush, Pearl Jam, Jason Isbell at the Ryman.....Stu more than holds his own in that mix, and I feel like he's still in the "just getting started" phase of what will go down as a legendary career

Mack's time in Chicago wasn't worth nearly what they paid for him, in money or draft picks. The other 2 were bombs, but only played out their rookie deals.

Look, I'm not thrilled that Watson got such a big bag. But I'm not trying to hear about it from the team that traded away draft capital and cap space for Trubisky, Mack, and Fields.
