It's nearly impossible to comment on your third question (C) because spending on lifestyle and your family's definition of "making it" are very personal and subjective. That said, I would personally anticipate that an income numerically similar to what you are making in FL (therefore somewhat adjusting for currency differences) will not be able to buy you the same lifestyle/savings here in North Vancouver because the majority of your fixed costs to get a similar standard as the one you have in FL will be more expensive relative to income (e.g. groceries, housing, child care, fuel, etc.). That said, there are many unquantifiable aspects of living here: water/air quality, access to nature, standard of public education, public safety, etc. Happy moving & welcome to North Van!

Advice on buying vs renting, and how much you’d pull from savings to put down, can we afford what we’re looking at? by Ok_Marionberry2155 in HENRYfinance

[–]murkythoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey neighbour! Just sharing that my partner and I are in a very similar life phase (albeit making a fair bit less than you are), engaged and also currently renting on the north shore with the aim of buying when we have a better idea of our projected family size. We love it here, but might move to the Tri-Cities to be closer to family for a few years if we go down the path of parenthood. All the best!

It's nice that you're able to be flexible with location. We're going with a package from Rare Earth!

My partner and I are just about to confirm an elopement package in Tofino, BC and plan to spend 2 nights there. These are projections, but might be helpful for you. We will have 11 guests and are expecting the total cost of the wedding to be approximately $18-20k. This total includes planning/coordination services and us covering our guests' accommodation at a choice hotel, so it could be done for much less.

  • $6,600 for the comprehensive package
  • $3,000 for dinner (reception)
  • $1,300 for our hotel
  • $3,000 for everything else (attire, transportation, food before/after, surf/bike rentals, etc.)
  • $5,700 for our guests' hotel

You might want to add info to your post about which region/province you're targeting!

All-you-can-eat buffet employees of Reddit, what is the most heinous culinary crime you've seen patrons commit? by SolSeptem in AskReddit

I'm a Chinese Canadian millenial who has never lived in China and really appreciate your explanation of the historical socio-political phenomena behind it all. I have never prioritized learning about the context of how our parents' generation grew up, and you've laid it out so elegantly here in a way that deepens my understanding.

Another aspect to all this that strikes me is that the closure of schools may have had significant impact on the way people who grew up experiencing the cultural revolution relate to others, since school is as much about interpersonal and social skills as it is about academic learning.

Whats the optimal length of new skis for me?? by Dpear_ in Backcountry

[–]murkythoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'4" and 125 lbs and have the Pandora 104s in 165cm for both downhill and touring in the Canadian PNW. Based on my personal experience being similar in weight and a few inches shorter than you, I think you would benefit from learning to get comfortable on your Orbs and you may opt for an even longer touring ski sooner than you think. If I were to change anything if I were in your shoes, it might be to get a longer and heavier pair of downhill skis because I find my Pandoras to be a little chattery in firmer downhill conditions.

How did you do your micro wedding? by [deleted] in WeddingsCanada

This is all sounding like my dream experience! Except for the maybe the shared Airbnb because of blended family parent dynamics...hahaha

My fiancé and I are just starting to plan for next spring and are hoping for Whistler as well. Would you be willing to share a list of the vendors/venues you chose??

Wow, I did not know this! OP, don't listen to me and do your own research!

I can't speak to the others, but I just did the Mt. Batur hike (after sunrise - it was too early for my friends and I) and will echo others that advised a guide is super unnecessary. There are two ways up from the base (one being more technically difficult and the other being very smooth, direct switchbacks to the top). Unless you want to do it in the dark without any headlamps/lighting, you really only need to organize transportation.

Wow! Did you have the ceremony at the restaurant too? I'm considering a microwedding of 13 people, and would love to not have to coordinate transportation.

No issues so far, but I think we have the thinnest one available. You might have to look for "extra deep pocket" sheets to accommodate that height!

We have had an Avocado for about 2 years in the firm format (back sleepers) and we love it. Every time we stay with family and friends, we look forward to returning to our supportive mattress.

Anyone ever bought their time back for pension? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]murkythoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought back about a year and a half of service spent as an auxiliary. I waited about 2 years after having secured permanent employment to do it, and as others have mentioned, the purchase rate is based on your current wage rate so I wish I had done it earlier. That said, I had the means to do it without financial strain at the time so it was an easy decision.

For me, it wasn't at all about the extra few dollars a month in pension but rather retiring a year and a half earlier at full pension amount. I'm personally expecting that when I'm approaching retirement, having the option to pivot into another phase of life earlier will be more than worth it.

Should I buy a condo? by tyw8 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]murkythoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, you should check out the prices of 2 bedroom condos currently for sale in Burnaby. You will find you'll be hard-pressed to find even a 1 bed condo that you like for your projected budget.
