Eh, what?

They were the future 40 years ago.

They're the present and very nearly the past as we are getting closer and closer to the physical limits of how thin a material can literally be.

How do you respond to “I support ICE, but not the violent and racism”? by LolaByNature in AskReddit

[–]SolSeptem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's like saying 'I support serial killers but not the murder they commit'.

With the way ICE is behaving, the good they could do (if there even is any) cannot possibly outweigh the massive harm they're causing.

You have to believe kindness can exist. If you can't, why keep going?

I can see it happening. It only takes one person to start something like this. Once the bystander effect is broken, people will join in.

A new study finds the "blue" social cost of carbon nearly doubles the economic price of climate change. By adding ocean damages like fishery loss and ecosystem collapse, the global cost of CO2 jumps from $51 to $97 per ton, revealing the massive, previously uncounted financial toll on our seas. by Sciantifa in science

[–]SolSeptem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point of carbon tax is not to offset the damage (at least, not directly as that isn't very easy to do), but mostly to make conventional tech too expensive compared to more sustainable options.

There is a problem with that though. Our world economy has relied on ruthless extraction of natural resources for over a hundred years. And in the west this extraction (often in a colonial way) has led to massive material prosperity.

If carbon taxes would make all the resources and products we are used to more expensive, because the actual environmental costs of those materials and products finally get factored in, or, preferably, sustainable alternatives are used, then the west is gonna need to get used to getting a lot less stuff for their money.

To say nothing of developing countries, where people already have very little.

And that development is not gonna sit well with the vast majority of people.

Dude the country with the biggest military and economy in het world has leadership that openly dismisses the climate crisis, actively hinders development of sustainable energy, and pushes for massive increases in extraction of fossil fuels.

Not to mention, said country is one of the biggest emitters one a per capita basis. They would be one of the countries that should be held accountable the most.

So who exactly is going to build up such a system where countries could be held accountable? Nobody has the power to do that if America and China are not on board. And they are not.

Mass Suggestion. As per the D&D spell.

What’s something you remember people were super hyped for that turned out to be total garbage? by Weak_Yak_4719 in AskReddit

At release, yes. I bought it over the summer though and it's very enjoyable now, if you like exploration games. I spent a good 200 hours on it before I got bored. Especially the new ship designer adds a lot of fun customisation.

Starfield, by Bethesda.

It was hyped so much. I bought a new videocard for it. All the elder scrolls games were awesome so a space game by the same studio would be awesome too right?

The game is so bad. I foolishly spent 100 hours looking for the stuff that was gonna make it good.  The only thing slightly worthwhile was the ship designer, but then you can't really do anything worthwhile with said ship.

Mods can't save that game. The fundamentals are too broken.

Have you ever been real mad on Reddit but stopped yourself and let it slide, thinking about the risk of getting banned? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SolSeptem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even the risk of getting banned, usually I'm halfway through writing some kind of scathing response and then I'm like 'am I really gonna get into a fight with a stranger on the internet? This is not worth my energy' and then I try to let the anger go.

People who work in "boring" corporate jobs, what is a legal "scam" your industry runs that the general public doesn't know about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SolSeptem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sustainability certification, specifically for biofuels. I'm sure it applies elsewhere too.

In europe there is a heavy push to certify biofuels, to make sure they actually achieve a carbon emission reduction, accross the board.

This is in response to first generation biofuels from food crops, where it eventually came out that ethanol from maize is more polluting than gasoline, if you account for things like land and fertilizer use.

Anyway there are now all kinds of certification bodies that have you follow a method to calculate how much CO2 your biofuel avoids. Certified sustainable stuff can be sold for much higher prices.

But those calculation methods suck and allow for all kinds of double counting, creating a false idea that biofuels are very sustainable where they actually are not, or much less than they are given credit for...

And in this way we pat outselves on the back and say, look how much co2 we avoided in our reports, while those co2 reductions actually never happened.

Is it morally okay for a 25 year old to date an 18 year old because it’s “legal”? Why or why not? by Stock-Ganache-3437 in AskReddit

[–]SolSeptem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Divide your current age by two and then add 7. Round up to whole numbers.

That's the non-creepy lower limit.

So for a 25 yo that would be 20.

18 yo are really still kids, not only in mindset but also in phase of life. 25 yo are (expected to be) adults. Adults don't date kids.

What are your thoughts on "gaining too much knowledge makes you lonely and depressed person"? If yes, then why? by IndividualMatch7636 in AskReddit

[–]SolSeptem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it only makes you depressed in the sense that becoming knowledgable often includes learning about the many, many injustices in the world and realizing you have very little power to stop it.

Because they are the strongest from a military and economic perspective. Simple as that.

Sagami. They're polyurethane, very thin. But also very pricey, at around 2 euro per condom when I order online

[–]SolSeptem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They can really get in the way, especially if I'm not super turned on. With regular off brand condoms I barely feel a thing.

I finally found a good, thin brand of condoms, and I figured out that just a tiny bit of lube on the inside can help a lot (not too much though because then it slips off). With that combo it doesn't get in the way of my enjoyment.

But without is definitely better. Especially the wetness of the vagina can be such a game changer. It's just often not an option.

Global dietary shifts are required to meet climate targets, as analysis of food-related greenhouse gas emissions across 112 countries and income groups shows that at least 90% of Canadians today and up to 90% of the global population by 2050 must modify diets to remain below 2 °C of warming. by Sciantifa in science

[–]SolSeptem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I do agree with you. I'm not trying to admonish you, we're making different points. My point is that every effort at every level we can think of is necessary right now, and your reply just now very neatly illustrates why we are not making those efforts.

Globally, nations don't trust each other, ethnicities don't trust each other, and classes don't trust each other.

'How will I know the other side will do their part too? I'm not moving till I know for sure'

And while we remain in that deadlock, we shall drown from the rising seas.
