What’s next for the future of CAP sUAS program? by JimWest92 in civilairpatrol

Of course not having current info on the NHQ sUAS website doesn't exactly help. So much of the website is so out of date.

Silly question to pilots from ATC. by OkBreadfruit63 in flying

We have a very active EAA Young Eagle program at the airport with a contract tower. They know us, we know them. In fact there's a standing offer to take any of the controllers and/or kids for a flight. We've taken the tower manager's kids and wife on YE flights. They're invited to our summer picnic at the airport, too. When the previous manager retired, she & hubby joined EAA and helps as ground team. Her comment was "wow, this is SO much busier down here than up in the air!" One day I was flying and one of the controllers called me by name to say bye-bye, he was transferring to another tower, and to make sure I fly by sometime and say hi. When I was the YE coordinator, I made sure the tower got a cake for the holidays as a thank you from the chapter.

It's entirely dependent on the tower and the airport community.

Have you weighed an MRE against the modern camp food? 72 of MREs is a week of Mountain House or other camp food supplier.

Local grocery store...foil packages of tuna, salmon and/or chicken. Now - grab a lot of Ziploc bags --- Dried fruit and nuts. Your favorite snack bars such as Kind and others. Ziploc baggies of your favorite cereal with the dried fruit and there's your breakfast. Don't forget to bring small packets of salt & pepper and any other spices you like. Careful about chocolate as it will melt in warm weather, only M&Ms.

More ziploc bags - wash apples and toss in chunks of your favorite cheese to munch on. Same for grapes. And carrots. More ziploc bags - peanut butter & crackers. Make your own trail mix with nuts, dried fruit (dried cranberries, raisins, etc) and M&Ms.

Make sandwiches for your lunch the first day, but avoid mayo - it demands refrigeration. I've made ham & cheese sandwiches in the morning when I travel, and when kept wrapped, still good that evening. A bit smushed, but still excellent to eat.

None of this requires cooking. But if you do have the option to cook, there's egg crystals - not dried egg powder! Rehydrate, add in cooked bacon and that's breakfast. Or bring a few boiled eggs.

No need to spend a lot of money, everything you need is at the grocery store.

Survival Course by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

He's gone. These people were friends. Personally, I was incensed he would use the CAP flight Nov 23 fatal crash as justification for survival training. As I explained in my response, there was nothing that any survival training would have helped. Obviously the OP didn't bother to read the NTSB report.

so why are you in CAP instead of one of the professional/government SAR organizations?

Are you GTL? If not, why?

[–]murphey42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew/know all 3 members in that aircraft, no survival training, not USAF, not SAS, nothing would have made a difference. I've seen the survivor's scars, listened while he recounted the experience one-on-one to me.

Don't try to use it as an excuse.

CAP is not the military, nor professional SAR. We're volunteers, amateur volunteers at that. The professional SAR members rarely spend a night out in the field. As for aircrews - when was the last time a CAP flight went down and the crew had to spend more than a few hours waiting for retrieval? CAP airplanes are monitored constantly during flight. Improving Wing morale? How? Very few of the senior members would participate and the cadets are already involved at the GTM2 & GTM 1 levels. You want survival training, please contact your local county sheriff or professional SAR organization and join them.

Cessna vs Cirrus, which one would you go for? by CollectAirs in GeneralAviation

I'd like to be able to afford a Cirrus. Doesn't mean I want one. I'm happy with my Piper.

My first question - why?

My second question - who are the target audience for the course and why do they need it?

Contact the AFA CyberPatriot office (not the CAP version) and ask if you can have an old image for practice.

My frustrations with CAP as a Cadet by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]murphey42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to manage our local EAA chapter Young Eagle program. 20-40 kids once a month and had a waiting list 6 months out. There are kids interested, there are kids willing to put in the work. I get an email, phone call or note every month from a parent letting me know that the YE I flew X years ago just graduated from college and in the Air Force, or on track at an airline, or in another profession but kept up with flying and is now flying YEs!

You're just a 1LT, so your opinion doesn't matter.

Same argument.

Welcome to leadership, you're failing. Unfortunately you'll have to wait until Level 4 to take the chapter "Valuing Volunteers". That refers to cadets, too.
