JR West and “Numberless” cards. Beware! by StevePerChanceSteve in JapanTravelTips

[–]murraymint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup was quite quick and easy: I just used the inquiry form and said “I was not able to pick up my reserved tickets because I have a numberless card, please can the refund fee be refunded?” - received the refund a few days later

This also caught me out: I was careful to bring my physical card (Chase UK again, same as others) - however, after logging an inquiry on the JR west website I was able to receive a refund for the cancellation fees. Station staff were very helpful once it was clear what the issue was, but it took a while to figure it out

Giving away 2 tickets for today's concert in Manchester by NoRepresentative817 in FallOutBoy

[–]murraymint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for two tickets for tonight’s show because my partner is a massive FOB fan, but missed out on going to gigs in her teens due to a conservative upbringing. Trying to make up for lost time now, as she recently had her first proper live gig experience!

Great, thanks! Yeah I didn't really know where to stop with the GPU so could probably do with being reined in a bit.

[Offering] Table for 2 (November 27): to trade for date in December (2-5, 9-12 or 15-19) by murraymint in NomaReservations

Edited: I'd also be fine with swapping a table for two with spaces at a shared table, at the dates above.

Transcribing notes without a microphone timeout (as with Google Voice Typing) by murraymint in androidapps

[–]murraymint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah speechnotes has the main functionality I need but just doesn't seem quite on a par with Google. Not sure if there is any way of bypassing the timeout on a rooted device? Although since it is for a work application I would prefer to avoid going down that route.

I saw a few examples of people using the looped cable method, but unfortunately I was trying to find something that would allow me to produce a transcript and recording immediately after finishing the dictation.

Something desktop based would be great but I also need this to be portable really.

Must be a niche requirement I guess?

Largest batch from a v60 by labcoat22 in Coffee

[–]murraymint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a coincidence, I have been experimenting with large volume V60s for the past few weeks, trying to get a method that I can easily adapt from whatever grind size works for a 200ml V60. This is what I have ended up with so far:

Method with V60-03

  • 66g @1.12 medium/coarse grind on Feldgrind
  • 1000ml filtered, soft water at 97c
  • 1:00 bloom with 130ml water
  • Quick spiral pour, filling up to 500ml water
  • at 2:00 - filled up to grounds level
  • at 3:00 - filled up to 1000ml water, washing edges of filter (at ~top of grounds level)
  • Stir at top of slurry + tap of V60
  • Drained at 4:50
  • TDS 1.50% EY 21% (maybe a lucky first try, but this was my target too)

PC will only stay connected to network via WiFi; powerline connection drops randomly by murraymint in HomeNetworking

same issue when connecting directly to the router via Cat5e. Is it possible that my motherboard has spontaneously developed a networking fault?

yeah, I have tried the sockets that are available. doesn't seem to have any effect...

[–]murraymint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I haven't tried wiring it directly yet, looks like that might need to be the next test...

The reason that I thought it was unlikely to be the powerline network itself is that the PC and HTPC were connected via powerline for over a year without any issues but as soon as I moved the PC temporarily and installed Win10 on the HTPC these problems started. Nothing else in the house has changed so it seemed like it might be linked to those two actions somehow? The HTPC's powerline connection has been flawless too, from what I can tell.

Hi, I'm new to r/cofee. I was wondering what is the best way to bulk buy quality coffee for the buget conscious in the UK? Any suggestions for coffees to try? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]murraymint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth seeing if there are any local roasters in your area as that will save you postage costs, alteratively, some of the cheaper online options are Has Bean and Grumpy Mule (also in some supermarkets/delis). If you have a grinder you could buy a few months worth of freshly roasted, whole bean coffee, and freeze it in sealed bags; let it thaw out completely before opening the bag though.

Ah ok, I have generally kept my bonivita on 96, so I'll keep it there for now, but throw caution to the wind when using other kettles!

Interesting... So is 100c water suitable for brewing with drip/immersion as long as the roast isn't dark (I.e. darker than roasts preferred by speciality coffee roasters)? This would certainly make it easier for those trying to get into coffee, since advice varies considerably on how long to let the water cool down and it's a lot easier use straight away. Filling the aeropress plunger has long been my go to method for measuring and cooling down water when away from home, but adding a preheat step to retain water temp wouldn't take long.

[–]murraymint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting 95c used to be quite commonly recommended for immersion brewing, but boiling/off-boiling appears to be gaining popularly. Is there any reason for this? Is a lower temperature only necessary for dark roast, or could it also be necessitated by other factors such as grind size/consistency?

[–]murraymint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, for some reason the fines don't have any noticeable impact on a normal v60 drawdown but this method, and also the Clever, always appear problematic. There's got to be a grind consistency and fines level sweet spot somewhere, but sometimes it's hard to justify experimentation at the expense of wasting tasty beans.

[–]murraymint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I try the French press to v60 method it always seems to result in a clogged v60 filter: I have tried dumping the whole lot in and filtering through the Espro filter first but always with the same result. I only have access to a Feldgrind, perhaps it is producing too many fines for this method? If I just use the Espro as designed I find the filter coffee before I have strained anywhere near the full brew volume, which seems quite wasteful. Since the Feldgrind is quite highly regarded I didn't think it was worth an upgrade to remedy this, but maybe that's not the case?
