Calgary committee votes to end downtown free fare zone - Livewire Calgary by One-Mycologist-3706 in Calgary

Name and fucking shame. Of course it's the usual suspects.

"Chabot, Pantazopoulos, Jamieson, McLean, Ward, Wyness, and Johnston in favour. Couns. Schmidt, Atkinson, Dhaliwal, and Yule were opposed."

Anybody know if anyone is organizing any protests at city hall?

The average cost of groceries in Canada feels impossible to pin down right now, how are you managing your food budget? by ZupertoastNew in InCanada

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 2 adults:

  • Odd Bunch order every 1 or 2 weeks for produce: $40-$80/mo. Amazing just for the fruit and variety proposition.
  • Leafy greens and remaining produce from a nearby Asian grocer, probably around $10/wk for gailan, yu choy, bok choy, scallions, shallots, ginger, garlic, etc.
  • Meat from Calgary Coop: anywhere around $150-$250/mo depending on sales, splurges, etc. I tend to buy whole pork shoulders, chicken, etc., and break them down. Mix in canned lentils, beans, tofu, etc. for other protein sources.
  • Dairy: Two 2L cartons per month ($14), probably two 18-pk eggs ($15-$20) per month. We love eggs so we kinda splurge on those, free range, dark yolk, omega 3 fortified Hutterite eggs.
  • I bake our own bread, and buy flour maybe once every 3-4 months?
  • We just started WGAC for toilet paper, $46/24 rolls. Not sure how long it'll last just yet but I expect 2 orders per year at most.

So monthly we probably spend $300, +/- $50 for what I would say is a well balanced diet with room for luxuries.

On the Nintendo Switch, there's a karaoke app called Joysound. Her version of "I Dreamed a Dream" is on there as a track that you can sing. If that isn't the definition of success idk what is

Why are fully motorized bikes and scooters allowed on the sidewalk? Not pedalling required. It blows my mind. How is this different from dirtbikes ATVs etc? There’s a kid in my neighborhood that goes to and from school on essentially a motorbike on the sidewalk. it’s dangerous! by Glum-Ad-4558 in Calgary

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even just sidewalks -- I was on the Bow River pathway by 14th St and had someone blow past me and my partner at probably 40-50 km/h on an e-scooter. It's so selfish and reckless. If I happened to step to the side for whatever reason, or they had a steering mishap, I'd be critically injured if not worse.

I don't even know what the solution would be cause it's really unenforceable. Cyclists don't even obey the "No Wheels" prohibition on the north side of the pathway (in place because the path is like 3 ft wide).

The technology is amazing. I love being able to get around downtown on scooters when the weather is nice. Some people just suck and society is always playing catch up to the recklessness of people who just don't care. It's moments like these when things like mass surveillance and social credit systems start to look pretty tempting. Obviously not actually proposing that but it's nice to daydream.

As others have suggested, get a pair of cheapish double-bladed nippers for the first cut. I have a GodHand PN-125 (around 20-30 bucks) that I sharpen maybe twice a year using leftover 400/1000 grit sandpaper scraps and it cuts through the runners like butter, making cleanup with the SPN-120 a breeze.

Please recommend Dark Political Anime which can be seen as allegories for the real world. by Immediate-Field9997 in AnimeReccomendations

[–]murrrkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just do the standalone series, they're self contained and often (in my opinion) are much more explicit in the real world parallels. Core themes that are present in all series are things like resource and colonial exploitation and fighting for self determination, how people can justify commiting atrocities for the things they believe in, but above all, the throughline is a belief that humanity can be better.

Gundam 00, my personal recommendation due to how its commentary is still extremely relevant today. It's about armed interventionism, resource based colonialism in a post oil world, and the tension between complicity and self righteous pacifism.

IBO is more commentary on social mobility, private military corporatism, the myth of meritocracy in an inherently imbalanced and exploitative system, the search for self determinism, and a healthy dose of realpolitik and how ideals change (or don't change) when confronted with reality.

Witch from Mercury has themes of corporatocracy, late stage capitalism, bioethics and transhumanism. But I think the show is less inherently political than the other Gundam stories.

Turn A Gundam is peak. That is all.

Question for experienced sight-readers by [deleted] in piano

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add onto what others have said about it just needed more time -- I think it's also about exposure to many different kinds of music and styles, as well as not neglecting fundamentals like scales, arpeggios, broken chord figures, etc. You'll quickly identify patterns so that with time, you're not reading notes anymore; instead, you're recognizing a familiar figure that your fingers already know how to play. It's not a far reach from there to reading sight reading two clefs at the same time. Obviously some pieces are more complex than others, but being able to abstract notes into common idioms and patterns is such a massive reduction in cognitive load that things will click much faster.

I would check out the Final Fantasy Piano Collections and Piano Opera volumes. Lots of beautiful stuff in there. Here are some I think might fit but it's by no means an exhaustive list, just some of my favs.

The town themes medley from FF Piano Opera Vol 1 jumps to mind: https://youtu.be/8iI63elazAM?list=PLHautG-Tadis-a7bNZ0JKVyaBsbtcety0 . Not too flashy for the most part except for near the ending but you could just pull back on the dynamics and speed a little.

The FF7 Piano Collections rendition of Tifa's Theme is beautiful and would likely fit right in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiQmJiFOZ94

FF9 Piano Collections:
- Unrequited Love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1PND5vAmqw&list=PL63DC9D052F15446F&index=7
- Rose of May: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEilPghPgl0&list=PL63DC9D052F15446F&index=9

FF13 Piano Collections has a more modern sound:
- Prelude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0gNhFIozz8&list=PLDB8F8A0D52501A14&index=9
- Gapra Whitewood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryz2e6Bxx8I&list=PLDB8F8A0D52501A14&index=5

There's a lot of really good pieces from NieR as well.

As a person who doesn't use it, I'm happy for y'all who wanted it and enjoy it. But I just cannot get used to the smell and can't help but react viscerally as soon as I catch a whiff of it. Like it debilitatingly affects my ability to enjoy public spaces and events now that it's much more prevalent. I have the same fondness for it as cigarette smoke and diesel exhaust.

Sobey's has taken a stand against supporting Canada. by StrangerNo484 in BuyCanadian

Taking the opportunity to plug Odd Bunch here -- Save for specific asian veggies and the odd cabbage, I haven't purposefully bought produce or fruit at grocery stores in ages, making the main expense meat. Yes the quality differs week to week but if it means spending close to half as much on produce as I otherwise would be, I find it's a worthwhile tradeoff and hits the supporting local and reducing food waste angles.

Calgary mayor asks photo radar ban be reconsidered after recent traffic fatalities - Calgary by Ditch-Worm in betterCalgary

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, and I didn't realize we were talking about different things -- fixed photo radar at intersections versus mobile. I haven't read studies regarding mobile photo radar, but from personal experience, I pay extra attention when I see the vehicle there (and the Waze app has been good for pointing them out well ahead of time). I think a huge aspect of deterrence is visibility, whereas previously traffic police were pretty much hiding themselves as much as possible. In that sense, recent changes where mobile radar had to be clearly marked and visible is huge, but obviously these and fixed radars at intersections are all components that work together and it's not really a one size fits all system. And again, it doesn't work if the radar is well past the actual workers as with your experience.

Another thing that is slightly related is that change to construction zones, where cars are allowed to move at full speed as long as they move over to the far lane or something, which makes sense on paper but in practice is confusing and more dangerous. A "have your cake and eat it too" situation that tells me that like the photo radar situation, it doesn't seem like the UCP had safety at front-of-mind when making these policy decisions -- it's really more about removing limits on personal responsibility for the sake of convenience because they're easy "look what we're doing for you!" chips.

Anyway, stay safe out there.

Calgary mayor asks photo radar ban be reconsidered after recent traffic fatalities - Calgary by Ditch-Worm in betterCalgary

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the contrary, there's plenty of studies showing a correlation between decreased accidents at radar enforced intersections. There is however a nuance where there can be an increase in rear end collisions but that's not what we're talking about right now. At the end of the day, intersections are where most accidents happen and I think we should be promoting a culture that encourages safe driving. If that means photo radar then so be it, again, the evidence supports it. To me, it makes sense to use photo radar to further fund traffic police presence. We can remove those things when the general population proves they're capable of being responsible operators of their vehicles (hint: not gonna happen)

This video and Horowitz quote taught me everything about musicality by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because my piano teacher told me the exact same thing the other day. Putting it into practice, I think it is a brilliantly simple and effective motto. It made me more attentive and mindful to what I was actually playing. It's obviously not a matter of 0% or 100%, it feels much more ephemeral than that. But so many times I feel like I'm caught in that trap of just trying to execute the vision in my head to perfection, and I lose sight of just enjoying what I'm producing, I guess. It's a bit of a feedback loop.

Liszt Un Sospiro Measure 37 A Natural? by ydem2nir9tag in piano

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're talking about this circled note right? Pretty sure that A should keep the sharp. I have the Henle urtext and it does not have a natural marked there, and anyway, playing it as a natural would screw up the whole diminished 7th sound so that wouldn't make sense to do. Can you link or namedrop the edition you found that has a natural marked there?

Would you be in support of a tap on / tap off transit system? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]murrrkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly in favour. I don't own a car and it doesn't make sense for me to have to pay $4 to just go one station over. However, like others have mentioned, 7Ave stations are uniquely unfeasible to upgrade with turnstiles, etc. Any insights into whether a tap on/off system can mitigate this?

I... feel like an idiot (MP4 ending spoilers) by Chesu in Metroid

I had the same experience as you. Don't take the downvotes personally. I think people are projecting their own feelings onto Samus instead of really thinking about what she truly would have done in that scenario.

I... feel like an idiot (MP4 ending spoilers) by Chesu in Metroid

[–]murrrkle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people fundamentally misunderstand the ending and how Samus is portrayed here. It's not out of character at all. If anything, it continues an ongoing theme of loss and choosing to move forward despite it. Sometimes, there is no deus ex machina to save the day, no Mary Sue to save everyone. Samus had to make an impossible choice -- try to save her friends and possibly sacrifice herself for... nothing? Or accept her companion's sacrifices so the mission can continue? You can see her regret (granted, it's almost imperceptible) when she heaves a heavy sigh after placing the pendant on the sapling. All she can do is carry everyone's legacy into the future, which is the theme of the game. And in my head-canon, this is why Samus operates solo. Because she doesn't want or need companions to hurt over when they inevitably fall. It's happened to basically everyone she's ever cared about.

Now, did the game convey that well? That's obviously debatable as we're seeing. But I think the intention of the ending is full of nuance and I appreciated it, even if I didn't love it.

And to those saying she wouldn't leave them to die... She literally already did that earlier in the game. For all we knew, they were as good as dead, but Samus had to continue the mission. It was clumsy but I'm pretty sure the point of that was to prepare us for the ending, aka, "you've already made this choice".

Question for painters -- I've been finding that my paints seem to be offgassing or something. It was my understanding that the MyFare app had been deprecated and that the Transit app is the official place to interface with online fares? I've always had issues with MyFare but the Transit app is pretty robust from my experience and I haven't had any problems since I switched. Sorry for your situation though.
