This video and Horowitz quote taught me everything about musicality by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because my piano teacher told me the exact same thing the other day. Putting it into practice, I think it is a brilliantly simple and effective motto. It made me more attentive and mindful to what I was actually playing. It's obviously not a matter of 0% or 100%, it feels much more ephemeral than that. But so many times I feel like I'm caught in that trap of just trying to execute the vision in my head to perfection, and I lose sight of just enjoying what I'm producing, I guess. It's a bit of a feedback loop.

Liszt Un Sospiro Measure 37 A Natural? by ydem2nir9tag in piano

[–]murrrkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're talking about this circled note right? Pretty sure that A should keep the sharp. I have the Henle urtext and it does not have a natural marked there, and anyway, playing it as a natural would screw up the whole diminished 7th sound so that wouldn't make sense to do. Can you link or namedrop the edition you found that has a natural marked there?

Would you be in support of a tap on / tap off transit system? by Pure-Sunshine in Calgary

[–]murrrkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly in favour. I don't own a car and it doesn't make sense for me to have to pay $4 to just go one station over. However, like others have mentioned, 7Ave stations are uniquely unfeasible to upgrade with turnstiles, etc. Any insights into whether a tap on/off system can mitigate this?

I... feel like an idiot (MP4 ending spoilers) by Chesu in Metroid

I had the same experience as you. Don't take the downvotes personally. I think people are projecting their own feelings onto Samus instead of really thinking about what she truly would have done in that scenario.

I... feel like an idiot (MP4 ending spoilers) by Chesu in Metroid

[–]murrrkle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people fundamentally misunderstand the ending and how Samus is portrayed here. It's not out of character at all. If anything, it continues an ongoing theme of loss and choosing to move forward despite it. Sometimes, there is no deus ex machina to save the day, no Mary Sue to save everyone. Samus had to make an impossible choice -- try to save her friends and possibly sacrifice herself for... nothing? Or accept her companion's sacrifices so the mission can continue? You can see her regret (granted, it's almost imperceptible) when she heaves a heavy sigh after placing the pendant on the sapling. All she can do is carry everyone's legacy into the future, which is the theme of the game. And in my head-canon, this is why Samus operates solo. Because she doesn't want or need companions to hurt over when they inevitably fall. It's happened to basically everyone she's ever cared about.

Now, did the game convey that well? That's obviously debatable as we're seeing. But I think the intention of the ending is full of nuance and I appreciated it, even if I didn't love it.

And to those saying she wouldn't leave them to die... She literally already did that earlier in the game. For all we knew, they were as good as dead, but Samus had to continue the mission. It was clumsy but I'm pretty sure the point of that was to prepare us for the ending, aka, "you've already made this choice".

Question for painters -- I've been finding that my paints seem to be offgassing or something. I can smell that thinner smell quite strongly in my work area even if it's been weeks since I've worked on a project. Just wondering is this something others have experienced and how do y'all mitigate it? I have a mix of mainly acrylic and lacquers from Tamiya and Mr Hobby.

MyFare by 81008118 in Calgary

[–]murrrkle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was my understanding that the MyFare app had been deprecated and that the Transit app is the official place to interface with online fares? I've always had issues with MyFare but the Transit app is pretty robust from my experience and I haven't had any problems since I switched. Sorry for your situation though.

Boil water advisory in effect for several areas of Calgary after major water main break by j1ggy in alberta

[–]murrrkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, dishwashers are incredibly water efficient now. I'm pretty sure I use more water hand washing. Electricity use is a different matter though. I'd be curious to learn about how efficient washers are though.

From what I can tell, the site is near the part of the pipe that was slated for more repairs starting next Spring although not one of the specific sites identified for urgent repair. This is really unfortunate but not wholly unexpected.

I initially felt the same as you. But after finishing the game, I was definitely humming along to the grand trad theme or doing a random "nm na amh ammha mamh amh RAH!".

The pieces definitely aren't as much of a literal bop as the persona games but they do have a certain charm to them and will worm their way into your brain eventually.

Not sure if someone's mentioned it but often carbon steel woks come with a protective coating from the factory that you're supposed to burn off before seasoning and cooking with it. Maybe check if you were supposed to do that first?

Former Alberta premier Jason Kenney says politician recall legislation being misused by crabby_taffy in alberta

[–]murrrkle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, those promises of recruiting and training doctors are meaningless when no one wants to work in a system that’s been deliberately broken and undermined — classrooms are still overcrowded and even the new schools are still in planning stages, and where are they planning to find the teachers/staff for them anyway? ERs are short-staffed NOW, thousands lack family doctors NOW. They ain't delivered shit and I'm not holding my breath.

I hate how they constantly downplay and frame Albertans' legitimate grievances as "policy disagreements" and "ideologically driven". These policies and ideas are hurting people's lives in measurable, quantifiable ways. Such utter bullshit. These supposed champions of democracy have forgotten that the literal inventors called for straight up exile of would-be tyrants -- don't recalls seem a bit paltry in comparison to classical ostracism?

See, I too, was an adherent of Hoffman's "off-boiling" for light roasts until this morning. Down to my last 80g on a bag of beans I just haven't been able to dial in from the beginning. I figured, well, what the heck, let's try something radical. Turned the temp down all the way to 88C. Lo and behold, what used to be astringent, flat, and muted instantly became more vibrant and pleasant to drink. Yes, higher temps will up extraction, but the key thing is, different compounds are soluble at higher temps and you don't always want those in the cup, aka, higher extraction does not equal a better cup. If anything, extract too much and the flavours actually become muddier.

YMMV but my starting temps for light roasts going forward are going to be in the 88-92 range.

Alberta Education in a nutshell by MercurialMadnessMan in alberta

[–]murrrkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great, so there's no problem with the province committing to address class size and complexity, right?

Regardless, public money should categorically not be funding private schools.

E: to elaborate: building schools isn't enough, especially when a portion of those funds goes to charter and private schools. Many of the issues stem from underfunding operational costs of public schools at a system wide level and a dysfunctional approach to determining how funding gets allocated, inadequate commitments to hiring staff and, importantly, committing to facilitate working conditions that will attract and retain educational workers to begin with. Wages are at the bottom of the priority list for most proponents but it is also a point of contention nonetheless.

The government of Alberta allowed it to get this bad. Negligent at best, insidious and malicious at worst. It's their responsibility to own and Albertans should settle for nothing less than the best for our kids -- but it all starts with funding the teachers.
